USL PRO Game Report

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento Republic FC clinched a home USL PRO quarterfinal match with a 2-0 victory against Wilmington Hammerheads FC in front of a sellout crowd of 8,000 at Bonney Field on Wednesday night. Thomas Stewart scores his sixth goal in his last five matches as Sacramento pulled within a point of the Richmond Kickers in second place in the USL PRO standings.

Republic FC opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Stewart ran down a Justin Braun through-ball headed toward the goalkeeper. Stewart had just enough time to flick the ball past charging Wilmington goalkeeper Brad Stuver as it rolled into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Stewart’s team-leading 11th in USL PRO play.

Sacramento's 1-0 lead would hold into halftime. Republic FC keeper Dominik Jakubek was called to make a few important saves in the second half, the first in the 61st minute when Hammerheads FC striker Sammy Ochoa took a through-ball in stride to get past the defense and sent a fierce shot at goal. Jakubek came out a few yards to make the save, blocking Ochoa’s shot with his knee and sending it out of the penalty area to be cleared away.

Jakubek made the save of the match in the 68th minute. Hammerheads FC striker Sunny Jane trapped a lofted through-ball with his chest and sent a left-footed shot hurtling at Jakubek, who parried it up into the air with his left arm. Jakubek then got up and challenged the ball in the air, punching the ball off a Hammerheads FC attacking player and out for a goal kick.

Republic FC added to its lead in the 76th minute when defender Emrah Klimenta stole the ball from a Hammerheads FC player who had fallen to ground. Klimenta, in the attacking third, took a couple of touches toward goal and sent a low drive past Stuver and into the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead.

“The group has the right mentality and at the moment we are playing good football and creating a lot of chances,” said Republic FC Head Coach Preki following the match. “Overall, I’m happy with the performance and we go forward from here.”

With the win Republic FC extended its unbeaten streak to seven. Republic FC will look to increase its unbeaten streak on Wednesday, August 27 when it takes on the Charleston Battery at Bonney Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT, and tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.com.

USL PRO Game Report

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Eagles continued their march toward the USL PRO Playoffs with a 2-0 victory against Orlando City SC on Wednesday night at the Queens Sports Complex behind two second-half goals from Wells Thompson. Charlotte now sits, for the moment, in the eighth and final playoff spot on 30 points with a record of 9-13-3.

The teams exchanged possession in the opening 15 minutes,  and Orlando had a corner which was cleared away from danger. Charlotte had some early chances as a Gideon Asante shot was too high followed by a Jorge Herrera first-time shot that was right at Orlando goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo.

Herrera and Boggs combined well shortly after the quarter-hour mark, but Boggs' shot was denied again by Gallardo. Lions forward Corey Hertzog tested Alec Kann with a half-volleyed shot, but Kann punched clear in the 20th minute to keep the game scoreless.

Orlando continued putting the pressure on Charlotte in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but the Lions' two corners couldn't produce the game's first goal. The visitors came close just before the break, but a free kick by Darwin Ceren from the top of the penalty area struck the wall and was cleared.

Charlotte had a great chance early in the second half as Herrera got on the end of a Johnny Leathers cross, but his shot was absorbed by Brad Rusin and the Lions defense was able to clear.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the 72nd minute, however, as Zak Boggs dropped a pass to the advancing Thompson, who took a touch and fired a shot from the right side of the penalty area past Gallardo to the far post. Second-half sub Gui Brandao tested Gallardo shortly after he entered the match in the 83rd minute, but his right-footed shot was parried over the bar.

Thompson added his second of the night in second-half stoppage time after he dispossessed Boden just inside Orlando territory. Thompson fired a shot just under the crossbar at the near post from the right side of the penalty area to seal victory for the home side.

Charlotte will return home and host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Friday, August 29th at 7 p.m. at Queens Sports Complex in its next outing.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Thursday, August 21, 2014

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have signed midfielder Anthony Virgara to a professional contract for the remainder of the 2014 season.

Virgara, 23, played this past season with the Riverhounds U23 PDL squad as a midfielder and outside back.  He made 11 appearances scoring one goal on two shots.

"Anthony has been training with the club since last fall. We felt that he needed games over the summer with our U23 team to help his development and allow his game to mature," said Riverhounds GM John Rotz.

"He was a versatile player for our U23s, and has the ability to play on either flank or up top."

Virgara joins a Riverhounds squad that has been depleted by injuries over the past several weeks as it continues to push for a USL PRO playoff position.

"With the roster deadline upon us and with our Club's commitment to a strong playoff push, I was looking for a dynamic player who could step in to roles that have recently been impacted by injuries," said interim head coach Niko Katic.

"Anthony proved himself to be a valuable member of our PDL team and impressed our staff over the course of the summer. "

Virgara played locally at Keystone Oaks and Seton LaSalle and earned all-section, all-region, and all-state honors as a senior at Keystone Oaks.   He also played club soccer for Riverhounds Academy partner Century United.

Virgara played collegiate soccer at Marshall University, starting 44 of 63 games over a four-year career.

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Arizona United Soccer Club defeated OKC Energy FC 1-0 at the Peoria Sports Complex and moved into a tie for the eighth and final USL PRO playoff position with two regular-season matches remaining.

Defender Scott Morrison provided the late heroics for the home side in the 76th minute when he collected a Kadeem Dacres saved shot on the touchline and finished from a tough angle inside the box.

The win extended Arizona United SC's winning streak to a franchise best three matches and improved its record to 9-12-5. Arizona United SC is now tied with the Charlotte Eagles on points with 30 for eighth place in the standings.

The match also featured three red cards, the first being issued during stoppage time in the first half when Mark Howard was shown his second yellow after a foul to Long Tan. OKC Energy FC went down to nine men when Tarek Morad fouled Jon Okafor in the penalty area late in the second half to deny a goal-scoring opportunity. Second-half substitute Kadeem Dacres stepped up to take the penalty, but goalkeeper Samir Badr saved it. Thirty seconds later, Dacres was issued a straight red when his tackle upended OKC Energy FC's Cyprian Hedrick.

Rochester Rhinos News Release -- www.rhinossoccer.com

Friday, August 22, 2014

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The seventh-placed Rochester Rhinos host the fifth-placed Harrisburg City Islanders at Sahlen's Stadium on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. The Rhinos currently have 31 points from 25 matches played, and they sit one point above eighth-placed Charlotte for the final playoff spot in the 2014 USL PRO standings. The Rhinos opponent, Harrisburg, sits two points in front of its host with 33 points from 24 matches.

WATCH LIVE | TICKETS

Rochester was consistently in the top five in the table since it defeated the Charleston Battery in the Rhinos' home opener on April 27th. However, a winless month of August (0-3-1) has seen Rochester slip down the standings into the race for the final playoff spot. As the Rhinos prepare for their 26th match of the season there are currently six teams within three points either way of Charlotte.Wilmington is just outside of the three point mark, but the Hammerheads have only played 21 matches of their 28-match schedule.

“We have been inconsistent at times this season.” Rhinos head coach Bob Lilley said. “We had some opportunities against Charleston and Orange County earlier this month that didn't work out for us. That can happen from time to time with young teams. At the same time we've also performed well at home in big games. We knocked D.C. United [MLS] out of the [Lamar Hunt] U.S. Open Cup in May. We were the first team to give a loss to Orlando City here in July. There's not much that we can do with the opportunities we had in the past, but we still have nine points to play for in a crowded playoff race.”

Rochester has fueled its playoff chase with one of the best defensive teams in USL PRO this season, but the Rhinos have had their share of struggles on the offensive end. Rochester is tied for second in goals conceded with 22 in 25 league matches. The Rhinos are also tied for the best home defensive record in USL PRO with only eight goals conceded in 10 matches at Sahlen's Stadium. However, Rochester is last in the USL PRO in goals scored and 13th in home goals scored. Fourth-year Rhinos midfielder JC Banks leads Rochester in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points – good for 13th in USL PRO. While the Rhinos have 10 players who have scored a goal this season, only five players have scored multiple goals, and Alex Dixon is second on the scoring list with three goals and two assists.

“We had some work to do after the game with Orange County, and we've improved in training over the past two weeks," said Lilley. "We have established a very good idea of what we're trying to do both in the attack and defensively. Now it's just a matter of executing in a big match on Saturday.”

The City Islanders have climbed back into the playoff race with a 6-2-2 run of form in July and August after their 3-7-4 start to the season. While Harrisburg has won four out of their last five matches, their two road victories both came in Dayton where the Dutch Lions are winless in 2014.

Harrisburg is in its usual strong attacking form with 37 goals in 24 matches – the fifth best total in USL PRO. Last season the Islanders attack was led by All-USL PRO selections Sainey Touray (11 goals, six assists) and Lucky Mkosana (13 goals). With both Touray and Mkosana gone this season, the scoring burden has been turned over to Harrisburg veteran Morgan Langley who has five goals and six assists. Langley is supported in the attack by Akron product Robbie Derschang (six goals) and a pair of loanees from City's MLS affiliate Philadelphia Union – James McLaughlin (five goals, three assists) and Brazilian Pedro Ribeiro (four goals, two assists). The 25 year-old Langley's participation on Saturday night is in question due to injury.

Harrisburg goalkeeper Nicholas Noble, a 2014 All-USL PRO Second Team selection, anchors the Islander's defense. Noble enters Saturday night's match with a 9-8-5 record on the season, a 1.526 goals-against average, and four clean sheets.

“We have three games left. Our stretch runs starts on Saturday against Harrisburg. We have to find a way,” Lilley said.

Tickets for any match on the Rhinos home schedule will be available by by calling (585)454-KICK (5425), by visiting the MVP Health Care Box Office at Sahlen's Stadium, or by visiting ticketmaster.com. Rochester Rhinos season tickets, flex packages and group ticket sales are also currently available.

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Friday, August 22, 2014

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers (13-1-10, 49 points) return to City Stadium for the regular season home finale this Saturday night when they host a top-of-the-table battle against the defending USL PRO Champions Orlando City SC (16-3-4, 52 points). The high stakes match that could determine the eventual 2014 Regular Season Champions kicks off at 7 p.m. ET; gates open at 5:30 p.m. with live music from Common Wealth and craft beer specials including two tickets and two beers for $20.

Mid-week USL PRO results clinched a first round playoff game at City Stadium and put the Kickers within three points of league-leading Orlando as the defending champions dropped points in a 2-0 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday. Previously, the USL PRO powerhouse swapped home and home victories with Harrisburg after conceding a 1-0 loss in Rochester last month that snapped an 18-game unbeaten streak.

Meanwhile, the Kickers enter Saturday’s match following a tough 1-1 draw against Dayton last week. A pair of free kicks at either end of the field saw the Kickers take the lead when George Davis IV converted his 10th goal of the season before Dayton defender Shintaro Harada leveled the score in identical fashion to steal a point with 10 minutes to go.

The Kickers face Orlando for the first time this season after sweeping the two-game series en route to the 2013 Regular Season Championship. Previously, after handing the USL PRO powerhouse their first-ever loss in the 2011 season opener, the Kickers suffered three consecutive defeats to the Lions before stealing a point from the Citrus Bowl with a scoreless draw to close out the 2012 season. Then, blanking the Lions twice in as many games last season, with a combined four goals to none, the Kickers claimed the regular season title over the defending champions to bring the all-time series record level at 3-3-1.

The two clubs swap home field advantage to conclude the 2014 Regular Season in Orlando on Saturday, September 6 before kicking off postseason play one week later.

Players to Watch
Kickers: Defender Stephen Basso signed with the Kickers hours before the Roster Freeze deadline and comes to Richmond following an extensive professional career. The Columbia, Md. native anchored the defensive unit that backstopped the Harrisburg City Islanders to the 2011 USL PRO Championship Game, where they drew with Orlando City through regulation and overtime before narrowly conceding the title on penalties. Midfielder George Davis IV ranks sixth in the USL PRO scoring charts, adding his 10th goal of the season in the Kickers 1-1 draw against Dayton last week. The Lima, Ohio native signed with the Kickers after spending two seasons with the Orange County Blues and is the team’s second leading scorer, adding four assists for a total of 24 points. Veteran midfielder Luke Vercollone returns to action this Saturday following a one game suspension due to caution accumulation after leading the Kickers to a 2-1 win over Charlotte one week prior. Splitting time between the defense and the midfield, the 2013 Supporter’s Choice MVP has amassed more than 13,000 minutes in a Kickers uniform.

Lions: Prolific goal-scorer Kevin Molino equaled the USL PRO single-season scoring record when he notched his 15th goal of the season to lead Orlando to a 3-1 win over Harrisburg last weekend. The Trinidad & Tobago international signed with Orlando in 2011, claiming the USL PRO MVP award in 2012 and has since become the first signee for the Major League Soccer side in 2015. Doubling as an offensive threat and a defensive force, Adama Mbengue has contributed to eight shutouts on the season while racking up three goals and four assists in 2014. In his third season in Orlando, the Senegalese midfielder began the 2012 season with the club’s U23s before being called up to the first team. A mainstay between the nets, goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo has never had a goals against average higher than 1.000 over four seasons in Orlando. The 2011 Goalkeeper of the Year boasts eight shutouts this season and currently ranks third in the league with allowing just 18 goals in 1,980 minutes played.

USL PRO Playoffs
The 2014 USL PRO Playoffs will include the top eight finishers in the table, with the quarterfinals (No. 1 vs. No. 8, No. 2 vs. No. 7, etc.) set for the weekend of September 12-14. The semifinals featuring the four remaining teams will be played the following weekend, with the 2014 USL PRO Championship set for the weekend of September 26-28. All playoff rounds feature a single-game knockout format and teams will not be re-seeded following each round.

USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, August 23, 2014

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Rhinos played to a 2-2 draw with the Harrisburg City Islanders at Sahlen's Stadium on Saturday night. Clesio Bauque scored both goals for visiting City Islanders, while Tony Walls opened the scoring for Rochester in the first half, and JC Banks scored the equalizer for the Rhinos in the second half.

The match had playoff implications for both sides. Entering the evening nine teams were separated by only seven points in the USL PRO table with three weeks left to play in the 2014 season. After the result Rochester moved into a tie for sixth place with Charleston Battery, and Harrisburg remained in fifth place – two points clear of the chasing Rhinos and Battery. However, four matches involving seven teams in the playoff hunt remain to be played on Saturday night and Sunday.

The Rhinos opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Rochester's left back Onua Thomas Obasi and holding midfielder Walls stood over a free kick 25 yards out in the middle of the field. Obasi ran over the ball with a left-footed dummy run, but Walls struck his right-footed shot into the upper-left corner of the visitor's net to give the home side a one goal lead.

Rochester then earned a man-advantage just past the half-hour mark as Harrisburg goalkeeper Nick Noble was sent off. Rochester forward Alex Dixon broke in behind the City Islanders' defense and beared down on goal, only for Noble to bring him down just outside the penalty area.

Despite being down a man, Harrisburg drew level in the 37th minute as City Islanders midfielder Yann Ekra played a long ball into the Rhinos penalty area from 45 yards out. The ball sailed over the head of Rochester center back Kyle Hoffer, but bounced in front of rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy. During the missed communication in the home side's penalty area, City Islanders striker Bauque got on the end of the ball, took a touch around McCarthy, and finished into the empty net.

Five minutes later Bauque scored his second goal in similar fashion. This time, Ekra played a perfectly-weighted ball from 35 yards out that split Hoffer and fellow center back Babacar Diallo. Bauque ran onto the ball at the top of the Rhinos' penalty area, and shot the ball under McCarthy to give the visitors the lead.

Rochester leveled the score from the penalty spot through Banks in the 54th minute after his header was handled in the penalty area. Banks' goal was his team-leading eighth goal of the season, and provided the Rhinos with positive momentum into the final half-hour. Rochester pushed for a winner, which would have jumped it past Harrisburg in the standings, but was unable to find a decisive finish late on as the two teams finished with a point apiece.

The Rochester Rhinos will travel to Harrisburg on Saturday, August 30th at 7 p.m. ET for the return leg of their 2014 series with the Islanders. Rochester will conclude the 2014 USL PRO regular season at Sahlen's Stadium on Sunday, September 7th at against the Wilmington Hammerheads at 4:05 p.m. ET.

Tickets for any match on the Rhinos home schedule will be available by by calling (585)454-KICK (5425), by visiting the MVP Health Care Box Office at Sahlen's Stadium, or by visiting ticketmaster.com. USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, August 23, 2014

RICHMOND, Va. – Orlando City SC took a six-point lead at the top of the USL PRO standings, and Kevin Molino scored his record-setting 16th goal of the season, as the Lions took a thrilling 3-2 victory against the Richmond Kickers in front of a rain-soaked crowd of 3,562 at City Stadium on Saturday night. Orlando midfielders Valdmiro Lameira and Molino boosted the visitors to a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes on either side of the half before Kickers midfielder George Davis IV pulled a goal back. Rafael Ramos increased the visitors’ lead, and a Nate Robinson goal and a late-game comeback was not enough to overcome the league-leaders, who snapped the Kickers’ 21-game unbeaten streak.

Orlando raced to an early lead, capitalizing on a free-kick opportunity in the eighth minute. The Lions' Corey Hertzog drew a free kick deep in the right corner and Adama Mbengue served an in-swinging delivery into a swarming box. Defender Rob Valentino got a touch on the loose ball inches from the goal line but Kickers midfielder Luke Vercollone headed it off the line. Lameira rushed onto the rebound at the top of the penalty area and buried the follow up shot into the far right corner.

The Kickers responded four minutes later when defender Conor Shanosky served a long ball from the midfield to the top of the box. An Orlando defender headed it down, only to be scooped up by Kickers midfielder Luke Vercollone who laid it off to Shay Spitz. The Kickers midfielder settled the ball 20 yards out and fired a left-footed curling shot to the right post, but his effort pinged off the inside of the upright before being cleared out to deny the quick strike equalizer.

Later in the half, Kickers defender Alex Lee stole the ball deep in Orlando territory and tore through the midfield before slotting a leading ball to Kyle Porter on the right touchline. He eluded his mark en route to the penalty area and rocketed a shot on target but Orlando goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo smothered the effort.

Richmond had another big chance to equalizer with five minutes remaining in the half when Vercollone turned his mark and fed the ball to Samuel Asante, who raced through the midfield. A give-and-go with Spitz sprung him free on the right flank to slice a cross to the six yard box that connected with an awaiting Jason Yeisley, but his shot from point-blank range was denied by Miguel Gallardo.

Minutes after the restart, Orlando doubled its lead when a poor clearance out of the back was intercepted, freeing Ramos on the right sideline. Trotting towards the box, he centered the ball to Dennis Chin, who laid it off for Molino to chip a lofted ball just under the crossbar. Molino's goal broke the single-season regular season goal-scoring record, breaking the mark set by former Lion Dom Dwyer and Pittsburgh's Jose Angulo last season.

The visitors’ celebrations were short-lived; however, as the Kickers answered back seconds later when Görres received the ball on the wing and played a through ball to Davis deep on the left side. Beating his mark into the penalty area, he fired a shot to the far upper corner to cut the deficit in half.

With an equalizer looming, Orlando increased its lead in the 70th minute after drawing a free kick in the midfield. Moving the ball up the field, Mbengue played the ball back to Chin who sought out an unmarked Ramos at the left touch line. The swift midfielder carried the ball into the box and beat Kickers goalkeeper Ryan Taylor to the near post, wrapping a bending shot around the upright.

The Kickers retaliated once more eight minutes later when Görres battled for the ball and fed a low pass through to Davis. Davis squared the ball for second-half substitute Nate Robinson, lurking at the penalty spot, who calmly tapped home the club’s second goal of the night.

Despite the late-game pressure and a flurry of fouls, the Kickers could not level the score inside the final 10 minutes as Orlando took all three points at City Stadium, handing the Kickers their first regular-season home defeat since the 2012 season.

The Kickers conclude the 2014 regular season with a three-game road stand, first travelling west for a pair of games against the Orange County Blues and LA Galaxy II before a rematch against Orlando City on September 6. Guaranteed home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs, the Kickers return to City Stadium on Saturday, September 13.  Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.

USL PRO Game Report

Sunday, August 24, 2014

CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy II (13-8-4, 44 points) earned a 3-3 draw with Wilmington Hammerheads FC Sunday at StubHub Center’s Track & Field Stadium, as two goals from Chandler Hoffman and a stoppage-time goal from Rafael Garcia gave the hosts a point on the afternoon. The Galaxy II led 2-0 with 15 minutes to go, but the Hammerheads took a 3-2 lead as a pair of goals by Sunny Jane and Mark-Anthony Kaye's first professional goal put Wilmington ahead before Garcia's dramatic equalizer.

Los Dos struck first when Hoffman tallied in the 14th minute. LA Galaxy Homegrown Player Jose Villarreal played a ball behind the Hammerheads' defense to Hoffman, who beat the offside trap and had just the goalkeeper to beat. Hoffman calmly slotted the ball into the net with his left to give Galaxy II the lead.

Galaxy II added to their lead shortly after the halftime break on a penalty kick goal in the 53rd minute. Jose Villarreal was taken down in the box by a Wilmington defender to earn the penalty and Hoffman stepped up to the spot and buried it in the left side of the net to give Los Dos the 2-0 lead.

The Hammerheads brought the score within one in the 77th minute, as Sunny Jane curled in a shot from inside the penalty area to make it 2-1. Six minutes later, Jane added a second to level the score at 2-2 as he fired home a first-time finish from Kaye's cross from the left from 10 yards out into the top-left corner.

Wilmington then took a 3-2 lead in the 86th minute, as Kaye put the visitors ahead after a chipped pass by Jane over the Galaxy II back line found the Toronto FC loanee in stride for a first-time finish. Los Dos responded with a dramatic equalizer from Galaxy II captain Garcia in stoppage time, however, as from just outside the penalty area, Garcia curled in a free kick to the upper-left corner of the net to earn the 3-3 draw.

Newly signed players Jason Bli and Kainoa Bailey made their Galaxy II debuts, as Bli started at left back and Bailey entered the match in the second half.

Curt Onalfo’s squad will remain at StubHub Center when they face the Real Salt Lake Reserves Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. PT.

USL PRO Game Report

Sunday, August 24, 2014

PITTSBURGH -- Playing with a sense of urgency, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds kept their USL PRO league playoff hopes alive, by defeating FC Dallas Reserves, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium. Goals by Rob Vincent, Kevin Kerr and Mike Green lifted the Riverhounds to their eighth win of the season, their seventh win in their past 10 matches, and most importantly to within one point of the final playoff spot.

"It's a huge win. A test of our character," said Green. "Last week, was a hard one for us losing at Arizona. But today, we came to play, and we showed what we can do."

As the second half began, the Riverhounds were holding on to a precarious 2-1 lead, after conceding a late goal in a first half, despite controlling possession throughout. The Hounds quickly regained momentum and took command of the match in the 54th minute, on free kick opportunity from 35 yards. Matt Dallman delivered a ball to the far post, and Green made a perfectly timed run into the box to head the ball past FC Dallas' goalkeeper Richard Sanchez for the two-goal cushion.

"There was huge gap between me, and the defender, so I was backing away, I wanted to keep opening up that gap. As soon as it opened, Dallman played a great ball and I was able to get it in," said Green.

The Riverhounds took the lead in the 20th minute, when Jason Johnson played a ball back to Vincent, who lined up a blast from just outside the penalty area that found the top-left corner.

Pittsburgh continued to dominate possession for much of the first half, and the Hounds converted again in the 33rd minute. Dallman's lined cross from the right side forced Sanchez to come off his line to punch the ball away, but Kerr was right there for the finish to give the Hounds a 2-0 edge. Dallman's two assists brought his total to six for the season, a team-high.

Riverhounds goalkeeper Mike Lisch would be tested in the moments that followed. He came up with a big save to thwart a Ryan Hollingshead header from a dangerous, long cross in the 38th minute, but wasn't so fortunate four minutes later.

On a pretty routine high cross headed toward the right corner of the goal, Lisch came out to grab the ball, but it inexplicably slipped through his hands, bouncing to the goal line, where FC Dallas' Cobi Span headed the ball through to cut the Riverhounds lead to 2-1.

In a sudden momentum shift, Dallas FC continued to mount pressure with two more quality shots that Lisch turned away. The Hounds outshot FC Dallas 7-5 in the first half.

"We're not good enough to take our foot off the gas, and get too comfortable," said Niko Katic, Riverhounds Interim Head Coach. "We dominated the first forty minutes of the first half, and then the last five minutes was a bit of a shocker. We can't do that. We've got to take care of business."

With the win, the Riverhounds (8-12-5, 29 points) are right in the pack of teams fighting for the final USL PRO playoff spot, trailing Charlotte, Wilmington and Arizona (30 points), and tied with Oklahoma City.

"Every game we play, we tell the guys, lets just have a chance to get to that last game against Arizona (Sept. 6 at Highmark Stadium). And that's all we ask," said Katic. "We have to keep playing one game at a time, we are hoping we have a chance in that last week."

With three games remaining, the Riverhounds must now go on the road next weekend, with back-to-back games at Charlotte and Charleston on Friday, August 29 and 30, that will play a big role in determining their playoff fate.

They will return to finish the season against the Arizona United SC on Saturday, September 6, with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Tickets are still available at ticketmaster.com. The game will be streamed live in it's entirety on YouTube.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Charleston Battery moved into fifth place in the USL PRO standings as they extended their undefeated streak to eight games, and handed OKC Energy FC its fifth consecutive loss, with a 2-0 victory on Sunday night in front of a sellout crowd of 4,722 fans at Pribil Stadium. The attendance total marked Energy FC’s eighth sellout of the season and the largest single-game figure this season.

Charleston took the lead in the 79th minute when Amadou Sanyang headed a Jose Cuevas corner kick past Energy FC keeper Samir Badr. The goal was Sanyang's third of the season, and Cuevas' third assist since he returned to the Battery last month.

Ten minutes later, Charleston extended its lead to 2-0 when Haviel Cordoves seized on a counter-attack, cut past his defender and drove in a shot from about 16 yards out that bounced over a diving Badr and into the OKC net.

On the ensuing kickoff by Energy FC, Sanyang was shown his second yellow card of the match and was sent off. Charleston outshot OKC 10-5 on the match and held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. With the loss in their regular season home finale, Energy FC dropped to 8-13-5, and remains a poiint behind three teams tied for the eighth and final place in the USL PRO Playoffs.

Energy FC returns to action on Thursday, September 4, against Sacramento Republic FC at Bonney Field for a 10:30 p.m. ET start. The Battery also face Sacramento in their next outing, as they visit Republic FC on Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m. ET at Bonney Field.

USL PRO Game Report

Monday, August 24, 2014

TUKWILA, Wash. -- Sean Okoli had two goals and an assist as the Seattle Sounders FC Reserves dealt a major blow to Arizona United SC's hopes of reaching the USL PRO Playoffs with a 5-1 victory at Starfire Sports Complex. Lamar Neagle, Tristan Bowen and Kenny Cooper were also on target for the Sounders Reserves as they snapped Arizona's three-game winning streak to take their third win in the MLS Reserve League this season.

After a solid opening 25 minutes, United suffered a few defensive breakdowns, and the Sounders Reserves took advantage. The first arrived in the 28th minute on a smart turn by Okoli into Arizona’s half. He attacked space and played to an unmarked Bowen, who curled a low cross into the penalty area. London Woodberry was able to get a touch on the ball near the goal line, but failed to clear the danger, which allowed Neagle an easy tap in from close range.

Okoli doubled the Sounders Reserves' lead in the 32nd minute when he scored from close range on a misplayed corner by goalkeeper Evan Newton, and recorded a first half brace six minutes later when he headed home an Aaron Kovar cross after United had only half-cleared a corner kick from the right to put United in a 3-0 deficit at the break.

United came out more brightly to start the second half, and pressed to get back into the game, but Bowen extended Seattle's lead in the 65th minute on a far post finish that was set up by a clever pass by Okoli. Arizona averted a shutout 10 minutes later when Woodberry headed home a Sam Garza corner, but saw the deficit go back to four goals on a Kenny Cooper finish in the 90th minute.

The loss did not eliminate Arizona from the playoffs as it remains in a tie for eighth place, but United will need help to maintain its position going to the final game of the season. Should the Pittsburgh Riverhounds win both matches against the Charlotte Eagles and Charleston Battery, and/or the Rochester Rhinos defeat the Harrisburg City Islanders, and/or the Wilmington Hammerheads FC earn any combination of four points against Sacramento Republic FC and Orlando City SC, Arizona's hopes for a playoff berth will come to an end.

Arizona United SC will close out its inaugural campaign on the road against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on September 6th.

USL PRO News Release

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week 23 of the 2014 season on Tuesday as Charlotte Eagles forward Wells Thompson was named Player of the Week. Thompson scored both goals in the Eagles’ 2-0 victory against Orlando City SC on Thursday night, which provided a major boost to the 2013 USL PRO Championship Finalist’s playoff prospects.

Thompson scored twice in the final 15 minutes against the Lions to earn the Eagles a crucial three points. The first came in the 77th minute as he picked up a pass from Zak Boggs and fired home into the far corner from the right side of the penalty area. Thompson then put the game away for Charlotte in stoppage time as he stole possession in midfield, drove forward into the right side of the penalty area and roofed a near-post shot. The victory allowed the Eagles to sit in a tie for the eighth and final playoff place at the end of the week’s action.

Thompson was joined in the Team of the Week attack by Wilmington’s Sunny Jane, who had three goals and an assist as the Hammerheads took four points from two games against Orange County Blues FC and the LA Galaxy II on their west coast trip. Harrisburg’s Clesio Bauque was also selected after his two goals earned a 10-man City Islanders squad a point on the road against Rochester.

Orlando had a pair of players selected as the Lions moved six points clear at the top of the USL PRO standings after a thrilling 3-2 victory against the Richmond Kickers. Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo played a key role with a six-save performance, while new addition Estrela had a standout debut that included his first goal for the club.

Pittsburgh also had a pair of players named as defender Matt Dallman and midfielder Rob Vincent each earned selection after a 3-1 win against the FC Dallas Reserves. Dallman had a pair of assists, while Vincent had a strong game in the center of midfield that was highlighted by a fierce shot from 20 yards that found the top-left corner to open the scoring.

Arizona’s Scott Morrison joined Dallman in the Team of the Week defense after his goal lifted United to a 1-0 win against OKC Energy FC on Friday night, while Sacramento’s Emrah Klimenta was named as he put in a strong defensive performance that was capped by a goal in Republic FC’s 2-0 win against Wilmington last Wednesday. Charleston’s Shawn Ferguson rounded out the defensive quartet after an excellent performance that limited OKC to five shots in a 2-0 win, while LA Galaxy II midfielder Rafael Garcia completed the side as his stoppage-time free kick earned Los Dos a 3-3 draw with Wilmington.
