The sophomore forward was involved in three of James Madison's four goals as the Dukes defeated Xavier (2-1) and Massachusetts (2-1) to win the JMU Invitational. Herndon scored the game-winning goal in the 24th minute as the Dukes overcame an early deficit to top Xavier on Friday and then assisted on a pair of second-half goals as JMU beat UMass on Sunday.

Colorado Pride forward Sarah Schweiss, who tied for the league lead in assists with eight in 2014, was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four of Colorado College’s five goals this past weekend.  The junior midfielder recorded the first two-goal game of her career on Friday night in a 3-2 loss at Northern Colorado, and two days later she scored twice during the second half to lead Colorado College to 3-2 victory against No. 25-ranked Denver.

Schweiss, who had three goals and 14 points in 12 games for the Pride, tied the game in the 68th minute by scoring on a rebound off a corner kick, and then notched the game-winner with 7:02 remaining on a shot from the right side of the box.

University of Dayton junior midfielder Nicole Waters, who helped the Gulf Coast Texans to the 2014 Southeastern Conference title, was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after she had a part in all three of Dayton's goals against No. 9 Texas A&M. Waters, who spent the previous two W-League seasons with the Toronto Lady Lynx, scored twice and assisted on another as the Flyers fell short, 4-3 against the Aggies. Against Rice, Waters’ added her team-leading third goal of the season in a 2-2 draw. Former New Jersey Wildcats forward Grace Correll took home the Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors, as the Lehigh freshman provided a spark off the bench in the Mountain Hawks’ 2-0 win against Binghamton. Correll gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead on a header for her first career goal just before halftime, and assisted on the insurance goal in the 76th minute.

W-20 was also represented among the honorees this week, with Michigan PDA midfielder Merlinn Beckwith named the Sun Belt co-Player of the Week after leading Appalachian State to a 3-1 victory against Elon. Beckwith, a junior, tallied her second career multi-goal match on Sunday with two goals against the Phoenix. Both goals came within a 10-minute stretch in the second half as she propelled the Moutaineers to victory.

2013 LA Blues forward Sam Mewis was the lone selection on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week, with the UCLA forward scoring twice and adding an assist as UCLA swept Maryland and UC Irvine.

The lead would not last long as Charleston would tie the match in the 17th minute. Midfielder Jose Cuevas sent a free kick into the penalty area from 25 yards out ,and the ball found defender Colin Falvey unmarked to head it past Republic FC keeper Jake Gleeson to tie the score.

Ocala Stampede News Release -- www.ocalastampede.com

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

OCALA, Fla. – The 2014 PDL season was the most successful season in the Ocala Stampede's short history, as the club clinched its third consecutive Southeast Division Title (2012-2014), and won the 2014 Southern Conference Championship for the first time in team history against the defending 2013 PDL Champion Austin Aztex, who will be joining USL PRO in the 2015 season. The Stampede again made history after making their first appearance at the PDL Championship in Pontiac, Michigan. Since 2012, the Stampede and the Austin Aztex have been the PDL’s most successful franchises in terms of points (99 total) during the regular season.

Before their semifinal defeat against Kitsap, the Stampede were unbeaten in their last 14 matches, propelled by team-leading Ilija Ilic's 20 points. Ilic finished the season seventh in points and ninth in goals in the PDL, to earn All-Southern Conference selection, where he was joined by Karamba Janneh and Ben Knight. The teams also received standout performances by Lewis Hilton, who had 16 points, and Kyle Breitmeyer as they put together another excellent regular season under the stewardship of Coach Cheyne Roberts.

To reach the PDL Championship, the Stampede had to outlast the Laredo Heat in penalty kicks to advance to the Southern Conference Championship Game, which was their first postseason victory in their three-year history. The most important Stampede victory came on July 27th, when the Stampede posted a dominant 2-0 victory against Austin, the league’s defending champ, in the conference title game in searing conditions on the Aztex’s home field.

By garnering victory against Austin in the conference title game, Ocala defeated both the teams that drove it from the playoffs in the past two seasons, and joined the Michigan Bucks (the Central Conference champ), the Kitsap Pumas (Western) and the Jersey Express (Eastern) in the PDL Championship, that was played on Aug. 1 and 3 in Pontiac, Michigan. There, however, the Stampede would fall 2-1 to the Pumas, with Hilton's outstanding free kick just before the halftime break to level to score not enough as Kitsap scored a late winner to advance to the final.

“It was a great season,” said Roberts. “It was exciting and filled with all the parts of a journey that make it special. We wanted to put together a squad that was capable of winning championships and we did just that. The credit goes to the players who were committed to striving for excellence on and off the field. We are thankful for their effort and commitment to this club.

“This club has had a fantastic first three years on the field and as an organization. We are excited to keep growing as a club and are looking forward to the next PDL season.”

The Stampede ownership and management staff would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, players, and parents for their continued support of the Ocala Stampede organization. Without your support, this season’s achievements would not have been possible. The Stampede will always be committed to pursue for excellence both on and off the field.

Harrisburg City Islanders News Release -- www.cityislanders.com

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg  City Islanders will welcome their MLS partner the Philadelphia Union (7-7-9) to Skyline Sports Complex on Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET. The friendly will be a rematch of the classic Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup meeting earlier this season, where the Union upended the Islanders 3-1 after extra time at PPL Park.

The Union do not return to MLS play until Wednesday, September 3rd, meaning fans can expect to see a near full-strength Philadelphia team.

The City Islanders have found their stride in their recent six-match stretch, posting a 4-1-1 record, including a win over USL PRO leaders and future MLS club Orlando City SC. The Isles' latest match resulted in a 2-2 draw against the Rochester Rhinos - a result Harrisburg was happy with after goalkeeper Nick Noble was sent off just 33 minutes into the match.

The Union have also been in good form of late, recording a 3-1-2 tally over their past six MLS matches. Lancaster, Pa. product Andrew Wenger garnered Man of the Match honors for his two-goal effort in a 4-2 Union victory against the San Jose Earthquakes at PPL Park on Sunday night. The triumph pushed Philadelphia to 30 points on the season, just one point shy of a place in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Mozambican forward Clesio Bauque matched Wenger's brace while leading the 10-man Harrisburg side to a satisfying result on the road. Yann Ekra made it an international affair as the Ivory Coast native recorded the assist on both goals. However, it was keeper David Flynn who stole the show while making spectacular saves to minimize the damage and only allow a single goal to secure a critical point on the road.

Former Islanders' star Sheanon Williams also played a major role in Philadelphia's victory this weekend, scoring a 72nd minute goal to break a 2-2 tie just two minutes after San Jose had pulled level. Williams spent the 2010 season with the Islanders, notching three goals in 19 matches en route to "Upper 90" City Islanders' Rookie of the Year honors. Williams would sign with the Union in August of the same year, just over four months after his Islanders debut.

Thursday's match will be the seventh meeting between the clubs, including four friendlies and two U.S. Open Cup showdowns. The Union have won both competitive matches by scores of 5-2 in 2012 and 3-1 earlier this season. The depleted Islanders' U.S. Open Cup roster nearly completed the massive upset before an 89th-minute equalizer from Maurice Edu would eventually elevate Philadelphia in a 3-1 extra time thriller.

Harrisburg will bring Philly flavor to the Island, where fans can enjoy Philadelphia inspired food and drinks, including Philly cheese steaks, pretzels and more! Fans who purchase tickets in advance can take advantage of an exclusive offer for discounted ticket prices ($15 adult, $10 children) and a complementary City Islanders scarf with every purchase! Socceritaville tickets will also be available, with prices ranging from $20 for deck access to $30 for a full VIP experience including complementary drinks. All offers expire Wednesday, August 27th at 5 p.m. ET.

General admission tickets will be sold at the gate for $20 for adults and $15 for children. Socceritaville tickets will also be available to purchase on match day. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Sounders FC U-23 News Release -- www.soundersu23.com

Thursday, August 28, 2014

SUMNER, Wash. – Sounders FC U-23 forward Jordan Morris has been named to the United States Men’s National Team roster for the September 3rd friendly against the Czech Republic in Prague. Morris is one of 22 players on the roster for the match, which also includes fellow PDL alumni Brad Guzan, Geoff Cameron and Tim Ream. The match kicks off at 11:15 a.m. PT on NBC Sports Network.

Morris, who scored the game-winner for the U-23 MNT against Bahamas last month, was named the 2012-13 Development Academy Player of the Year for the U-17/18 age group while playing for the Seattle Sounders FC Academy. He is the first active college player to be included on a roster under Klinsmann.

Morris played four matches for the Sounders U-23 this summer, scoring one goal. He missed time with the squad due to Stanford University and US U-23 National Team duties.

The Sounders U-23 signed Morris, one of the brightest young players in the country, this offseason. Morris just finished his freshman year at Stanford University and has also made appearances for the United States U-20 and U-21 National Teams.

Morris burst on to the national soccer awareness after scoring 27 goals in 28 matches for the Sounders Academy and being named the U-17/18 US Soccer Development Academy Player of the Year in 2013.

"Jordan Morris is an exciting young player and he seems to excel at every level he gets the opportunity to play at,"  Sounders U-23 GM and Head Coach, Darren Sawatzky said. "The U-23 team is a great place for him to continue his rise in the game during the summer months.”

Morris then went on to make 1st Team All-Pac 12 as a freshman and earn call-ups to the United States youth national team.

His ability, technique, and vision, mixed with his 5’11, 185 pound frame, make Morris a truly unique prospect with professional soccer on his horizon.

“The competitive games in the Northwest Division of the PDL has helped many players in their journey to become professional players and it will be the same for Jordan,” Sawatzky said.

The Seattle native scored six goals last fall for Stanford and led all freshmen in the Pac-12 with seven assists.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -  The Harrisburg City Islanders dropped a 3-2 decision against their MLS partner the Philadelphia Union Thursday night at Skyline Sports Complex. Fred broke a 2-2 tie in the 75th minute as the Union took the win in the annual meeting.

The first half was full of extremely physical play from both sides. With a total of 13 fouls, it was apparent that although it was a friendly, both teams were determined to win. Philadelphia bested the Isles in the half, outscoring Harrisburg 2-1.

The aggressive offense was apparent right from the beginning after a header from Union defender Austin Berry was sent toward the net but ricocheted off the left post. The Union took the lead in the 13th minute with a goal from midfielder Sebastien Le Toux with the assist going to Brian Brown.

In the 22nd minute Jose Barril tied the match with an unassisted long-range shot that found the back of the net. As the half came to a close, the Union took the 2-1 lead when Leo Fernandez scored after a well-timed dish from Daniel Cruz.

The Islanders got things rolling in the second half with hopes of a victory against the MLS opponent. In the 50th minute, midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin found some space behind the defense, but his layoff attempt was deflected out of play. In the 51st, Bauque fired a shot from just inside 10 yards, but Zac MacMath knocked it away.

Soon after, Bauque scored from outside the box in the 55th minute assisted by Danny DiPrima to even the score at 2-2. Things were fairly slow for both sides for a large portion of the half, each looking for a goal.

The Union took the lead in the 75th with an unassisted goal from Fred. A late attempt from the Islanders' Javaun Waugh sailed over the net and into the deck as the Union took the 3-2 win.

USL PRO Match Report

Thursday, August 28, 2014

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Wilmington Hammerheads FC took a 3-1 victory against league-leader Orlando City SC on Thursday night at Legion Stadium, moving into seventh place in the USL PRO standings as it continues to push for one of the remaining playoff spots. Orlando lost for the fourth time in seven games but remained four points ahead of second-place Sacramento Republic FC.

Wilmington put the pressure on Orlando early and was rewarded when Philadelphia Union loanee Corben Bone put the ball past Orlando goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo in the third minute. Orlando responded with several opportunities as it tried to even the score, but none found the back of the net until Austin da Luz knocked in his third goal of season in the 41st minute after consecutive shots in the area.

Hammerheads forward Sunny Jane came close to putting Wilmington back in the lead before the half off a cross from Mark-Anthony Kaye, but overpowered the shot, sending it over the crossbar and leaving the score even at 1-1 at halftime.

Jane and Kaye were on point entering the second half and fed each other opportunities in the penalty area. Kaye finally found his mark and gave Wilmington the lead in the 61st minute after receiving a short volley by Jane from the far post.

Orlando's Darwin Cerén received a free kick soon after Wilmington's goal that nearly equalized the score once more, but goalkeeper Brad Stuver was equal to the task.

The Hammerheads secured the victory in stoppage time when forward Sammy Ochoa got behind the defense and fired home after a cross by Kaye.

Orlando City SC News Release -- www.orlandocitysc.com

Friday, August 29, 2014

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City Soccer Club today announced that upon medical recommendation, Yordany Alvarez has retired from professional soccer effective immediately.

During the Lions’ home match on June 7th, Alvarez suffered from an undisclosed medical condition while on the field. Over the following weeks and months, Alvarez underwent a series of tests locally at Orlando Health, the results of which were supported by other top-notch medical facilities across the country.

“We are deeply saddened by this news, but Yordany’s long-term health and well-being must be at the forefront of any decision regarding his future,” said Orlando City President and Founder Phil Rawlins.  “To that end, both the Club and the entire Orlando Health medical staff were very prudent throughout this process in making sure he underwent extensive examinations to determine the possible causes of his condition and to find the best treatment so he can continue to live a full life.”

Alvarez holds a dear spot in the hearts of all long-time Orlando City supporters. Signed to the Club before its first season in Orlando, he led the Lions’ to the 2011 USL PRO Championship while earning League MVP honors. He was then transferred to Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake before agreeing to again join Orlando prior to the 2014 season as the Lions’ second player to be signed as a member of the Lions’ Major League Soccer squad.

“I have known Gio for over six years and he is a great human being. He has been an instrumental part of our success here in Orlando,” continued Rawlins.  “We will greatly miss his contributions on and off the field. We all wish our wonderful friend the very best in his future.”

Alvarez will not be leaving the Lions' organization, as he will working in the Orlando City Youth Academy, helping in the development of our young players.

Alvarez’s story is a humbling one, personifying the American Dream. Five years ago, the 29-year-old midfielder was among three players who snuck out of the back door of a Florida hotel - defecting from their native Cuba in the middle of an international tournament. After making it across the country on just $500, the midfielder met Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath at a player tryout session upon which he was immediately signed by the club.

“I’d like to thank Coach Heath and the entire Orlando City organization for the opportunities I’ve had over the last several years,” said Alvarez.  “While I’m deeply disappointed that I cannot return to the sport I love, I must consider my health in this decision as I look to explore the next chapter in my life. I’m grateful to my teammates, friends and fans for their support during this ordeal – it has helped me more than words can express.”

In recognition of his success on the field and contributions to the organization, Alvarez will be recognized in a special ceremony during Orlando City’s last home game on September 6th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Additional details of the match will be forthcoming.

Fans are encouraged to send well wishes to Gio via Twitter at @AlvarezYordany.

USL PRO Game Report

Friday, August 29, 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds moved into a tie for eighth place in the USL PRO standings as Miroslav Cabrilo scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory against the Charlotte Eagles on Friday night at Queens Sports Complex. The Riverhounds are now level on 32 points with the Rochester Rhinos, with two games remaining in the regular season, while the Eagles sit two points back in 10th place.

The game started with a number of good opportunities for the Eagles in the first 10 minutes. The first came to Fred Sekyere when he took a cross from Zak Boggs in the sixth minute, but Pittsburgh goalkeeper Mike Lisch was able to get a hand on it just before Sekyere could get his shot off. Wells Thompson gathered in the rebound, but his shot went just over the crossbar.

The first half continued to give both teams good opportunities but neither was able to capitalize. In the 42nd minute, Pittsburgh appeared to take the lead when Jose Angulo redirected a shot by Danny Earls from the edge of the penalty area, but the Riverhounds' leading scorer was ruled offside to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Both teams continued to create opportunities in the second half. The Eagles had a chance right at the hour mark when they got a free kick just outside the penalty area, but the shot deflected off the wall andaway to safety. Sekyere then almost gave the Eagles the lead when he took a good first-time finish off a pass from Drew Yates, but the shot went just wide of the right post.

The Riverhounds took the lead after they earned a corner kick In the 76th minute. Cabrilo was able to get a header on target, and it went past Eagles goalkeeper Alec Kann and into the back of the net. Charlotte pushed everything forward in the game’s final 20 minutes, but couldn’t break through a stout Pittsburgh defense as Michael Lisch recorded his fifth shutout of the season.

The Eagles next travel to Montreal to take on the Impact Reserves at 1 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon. The Eagles will return home for their final USL PRO home game of the season on Saturday, September 6th as the Harrisburg City Islanders come to Queens Sports Complex for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff.

W-League Round-Up

Saturday, August 30, 2014

No. 1 UCLA and No. 9 North Carolina finished scoreless in the marquee matchup in Women’s NCAA Division I Soccer on Friday night as a Bruins defense led by the LA Blues’ Abby Dahlkemper and Caprice Dydasco held the Tar Heels without a shot on goal for only the second time in program history.

The Bruins did threaten offensively, with the biggest danger coming from fellow Blues player Sam Mewis, who forced saves from UNC’s Bryane Heaberlin in the 10th minute and Lindsey Harris in the 65th. Dahlkemper and Dydasco also proved a threat from set pieces, as both put efforts on target in the first half, but the Bruins were unable to break down a solid defense led by the Washington Spirit Reserves’ Sarata Murray and Blues defender Brooke Elby, as UCLA was held to one shot on goal in the second half and overtime.

"The game was a high-level game: fast-paced, a lot of energy, great athletes out there," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "I think we were unlucky not to score one. You've got to give a lot of credit to UNC. They defended really well. They shut down channels and some gaps that we thought were open and made it really hard for us. We could have been better on our set plays, but overall the effort was there. You have to applaud both teams for the effort and just how much they really went after it."

No. 9 PENN STATE 3, UCONN 1: Colorado Pride forward Mallory Weber had the opening goal as the Nittany Lions remained perfect with their third win of the season as they downed the Huskies.

A 2014 All-Western Conference selection with 11 goals for the Pride this summer, Weber scored her third goal in as many games for PSU in the fifth minute as she volleyed home a cross by former Ottawa Fury defender Kori Chapic. Freshman Megan Schafer added another pair of goals for Penn State as the Nittany Lions cruised to a comfortable victory.

No. 16 TEXAS TECH 2, NO. 11 NOTRE DAME 1: Colorado Rush forward Janine Beckie had the game-winning goal as the Red Raiders rallied to upset the Fighting Irish at Alumni Field in South Bend, Ind.

Notre Dame took a lead to the halftime break as Katie Naughton put home a corner kick in the 14th minute. Texas Tech quickly rallied in the second half, however, and got back on level terms as Seattle Sounders Women’s Jaelene Hinkle found Hannah Devine for a near-post header. Less than a minute later, Beckie capitalized on a Notre Dame turnover and fired a high shot into the net to earn the road upset.

No. 20 GEORGETOWN 6, N.C. STATE 0: Former LA Blues standout Daphne Corboz had a goal and three assists to lead the Hoyas past the Wolfpack at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.

The Hoyas took the lead on an own goal in the 12th minute, but Corboz’s influence began to be felt as she played a role in each of the next four goals. Marina Paul headed home Corboz’s corner kick to make it 2-0 at the break, and the midfielder then sprang Vanessa Skrumbis early in the second half for the first of her two goals. Corboz added a goal of her own eight minutes into the second half, and then provided the assist on Skrumbis’ second before Kaitlin Bast closed out the scoring.

JAMES MADISON 2, No. 24 WAKE FOREST 1: Ottawa Fury FC’s Sydney Braun-McLeod and the Washington Spirit Reserves’ Ashley Herndon linked up to lead the Dukes to an upset of the Demon Deacons at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem.

Wake Forest took the lead in the ninth minute when W-20 standout Kendall Fischlein of Lake Norman SC scored her first goal of the season, but James Madison got back on level terms before the halftime break as Herndon led a counter-attack that set up Braun-McLeod for her second goal of the season. Katie Hyland gave the Dukes the lead six minutes into the second half, and they were able to hold on for victory as former Fredericksburg Impact W-20 goalkeeper Ellen Forrest made a pair of saves.

PDL Round-Up

Saturday, August 30, 2014

Orlando City U23’s Andrew Brody scored the only goal as No. 9 Louisville took victory against No. 2 Maryland in the Cardinals’ opening game at Lynn Soccer Stadium in front of a school record crowd of 7,047 fans.

2014 PDL Young Player of the Year Ricardo Velazco of FC Tucson provided the assist for Brody nine minutes into the second half, having been sprung down the right by the Chicago Fire U-23’s Will Vitalis. Velazco – who had four assists for Tucson this summer – placed a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Brody was on hand to head home and send the massive crowd into celebration.

"I hope the people tonight had a positive experience. I thought it was high level of soccer for so early in the year for two teams that are very, very good teams," Louisville Head Coach Ken Lolla said. "Hopefully, the people tonight had a good experience not only in the soccer aspect, but the venue and all the amenities that go with it. I hope that they continue to come back and support us. We have some great games and hopefully the fan base continues to grow."

The Cardinals went close to taking the lead in the 12th minute when fellow Orlando City U23 midfielder Romilio Hernandez hit the crossbar, but the game went to the break scoreless. Former River City Rovers goalkeeper Joachim Ball made five saves to record his 10th shutout for Louisville as the Cardinals opened the new season with a big victory.

No. 1 NOTRE DAME 2, No. 12 MARQUETTE 1: Ocean City Nor’easters forward Leon Brown had the game-winning goal as the Fighting Irish rallied to take victory against the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 12th minute when Chicago Fire U-23 forward David Selvaggi created a chance that C. Nortey put away. Notre Dame got back on even terms before the halftime break, however, as Connor Klekota found the back of the net, and Brown then put the defending national champions on top midway through the second half.

No. 3 VIRGINIA 1, No. 25 OLD DOMINION 0: Former Fredericksburg Hotspur player Ryan Zinkhan scored a golden goal in overtime to lift the Cavaliers past the Pride at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia held the upper hand for much of the game but didn’t break the deadlock until the second minute of overtime as a low ball by Eric Bird found Zinkhan 20 yards from goal, and he fired low into the left corner. The goal earned Sounders FC U23 goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell victory in his first college start, as he recorded two saves in the shutout.

No. 4 UCLA 3, No. 11 WAKE FOREST 1: Reading United AC’s Larry Ndjock had the game-winner as the Bruins opened the season with victory against the Demon Deacons at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Wake Forest took the lead in the 13th minute as the Portland Timbers U-23s’ Jacori Hayes and Michael Gamble linked up to create a chance for Ian Harkes to finish. UCLA hit back quickly, however, when Andrew Tusaazemajja found the back of the net three minutes later, and Ndjock then put home a finish from Tusaazemajja’s cross to make it 2-1 in the 22nd minute. Seyi Adekoya added a late goal for the Bruins to put the game away as Ventura County Fusion goalkeeper Earl Edwards recorded four saves.

No. 5 NEW MEXICO 1, No. 13 AKRON 0: Former Jersey Express player Oniel Fisher had the only goal as the Lobos defeated the Zips at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, N.M.

Fisher’s goal arrived less than three minutes in as Fisher was found at the top of the penalty area by Sounders FC U23 midfielder Chris Wehan, and the former Express man sent a low into the left corner. Wehan went close to adding to the Lobos’ lead as he had a pair of chances well saved, but Fisher’s early strike would be all New Mexico would need to take victory.

No. 6 WASHINGTON 4, GONZAGA 0: Sounders FC U23 forward Sean Okoli had a pair of goals as the Huskies took victory against the Bulldogs in Spokane, Wash.

Washington took the lead through an own goal in the 20th minute, and Okoli doubled the advantage a little more than 10 minutes later as he converted from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the area. The Puget Sound Gunners’ Josh Heard added to the Huskies’ lead with 15 minutes to go and Jones added a second in the final minute, again from the penalty spot.

No. 22 NORTH CAROLINA 3, No. 7 CALIFORNIA 1: Goals by the OC Pateadores Blues' Andy Craven, Carolina Dynamo’s Robbie Lovejoy, and Chicago Fire U-23’s Tyler Engel, led the Tar Heels past the Bears at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.

raven and Lovejoy each had a goal and an assist, as Craven set up Engel for UNC’s opener in the 19th minute. Craven was then the beneficiary of Lovejoy’s through ball as he finished one-on-one to make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute. Cal pulled a goal back three minutes later through Christian Thierjung, but the Tar Heels put the game away with seven minutes to go as Lovejoy scored their third.

No. 17 COASTAL CAROLINA 3, No. 8 CONNECTICUT 2: K-W United’s Ricky Garbanzo had the game-winning goal and two assists as the Chanticleers scored an upset on the road at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.

UConn took a two-goal lead through Cyle Larin and an own goal, but Coastal Carolina surged back as Garbanzo provided the assists on goals by the Carolina Dynamo’s Ollivier Gueguen in the 56th minute and Louis Dargent six minutes later. Garbanzo then struck with 18 minutes to go to lift the Chanticleers to a big non-conference win.

No. 9 GEORGETOWN 1, INDIANA 1: Baltimore Bohemians forward Brandon Allen scored the equalizer as the Hoyas earned a draw with the Hoosiers at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.

Femi Hollinger-Janzen gave Indiana the lead in the 25th minute, but the Hoyas responded just before the hour mark as Allen was able to turn and shoot home after receiving a pass from Alex Muyl at the top of the penalty area. Orlando City U23 goalkeeper Tomas Gomez stood firm in overtime as he finished with three saves to earn Georgetown a draw.

No. 10 MICHIGAN STATE 1, SMU 0: Former Michigan Bucks defender Ryan Keener had the only goal as the Spartans took victory against the Mustangs at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing, Mich.

Keener’s goal arrived with 12 minutes to go as the Jason Stacy sent in a corner kick the senior was able to get on the end of six yards from goal to head home. Bucks goalkeeper Zach Bennett made four saves for the Spartans to earn the shutout as Michigan State opened with a solid win.
