Orlando City U23’s Andrew Brody scored the only goal as No. 9 Louisville took victory against No. 2 Maryland in the Cardinals’ opening game at Lynn Soccer Stadium in front of a school record crowd of 7,047 fans.
2014 PDL Young Player of the Year Ricardo Velazco of FC Tucson provided the assist for Brody nine minutes into the second half, having been sprung down the right by the Chicago Fire U-23’s Will Vitalis. Velazco – who had four assists for Tucson this summer – placed a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Brody was on hand to head home and send the massive crowd into celebration.
"I hope the people tonight had a positive experience. I thought it was high level of soccer for so early in the year for two teams that are very, very good teams," Louisville Head Coach Ken Lolla said. "Hopefully, the people tonight had a good experience not only in the soccer aspect, but the venue and all the amenities that go with it. I hope that they continue to come back and support us. We have some great games and hopefully the fan base continues to grow."
The Cardinals went close to taking the lead in the 12th minute when fellow Orlando City U23 midfielder Romilio Hernandez hit the crossbar, but the game went to the break scoreless. Former River City Rovers goalkeeper Joachim Ball made five saves to record his 10th shutout for Louisville as the Cardinals opened the new season with a big victory.
No. 1 NOTRE DAME 2, No. 12 MARQUETTE 1: Ocean City Nor’easters forward Leon Brown had the game-winning goal as the Fighting Irish rallied to take victory against the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 12th minute when Chicago Fire U-23 forward David Selvaggi created a chance that C. Nortey put away. Notre Dame got back on even terms before the halftime break, however, as Connor Klekota found the back of the net, and Brown then put the defending national champions on top midway through the second half.
No. 3 VIRGINIA 1, No. 25 OLD DOMINION 0: Former Fredericksburg Hotspur player Ryan Zinkhan scored a golden goal in overtime to lift the Cavaliers past the Pride at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.
Virginia held the upper hand for much of the game but didn’t break the deadlock until the second minute of overtime as a low ball by Eric Bird found Zinkhan 20 yards from goal, and he fired low into the left corner. The goal earned Sounders FC U23 goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell victory in his first college start, as he recorded two saves in the shutout.
No. 4 UCLA 3, No. 11 WAKE FOREST 1: Reading United AC’s Larry Ndjock had the game-winner as the Bruins opened the season with victory against the Demon Deacons at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Wake Forest took the lead in the 13th minute as the Portland Timbers U-23s’ Jacori Hayes and Michael Gamble linked up to create a chance for Ian Harkes to finish. UCLA hit back quickly, however, when Andrew Tusaazemajja found the back of the net three minutes later, and Ndjock then put home a finish from Tusaazemajja’s cross to make it 2-1 in the 22nd minute. Seyi Adekoya added a late goal for the Bruins to put the game away as Ventura County Fusion goalkeeper Earl Edwards recorded four saves.
No. 5 NEW MEXICO 1, No. 13 AKRON 0: Former Jersey Express player Oniel Fisher had the only goal as the Lobos defeated the Zips at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, N.M.
Fisher’s goal arrived less than three minutes in as Fisher was found at the top of the penalty area by Sounders FC U23 midfielder Chris Wehan, and the former Express man sent a low into the left corner. Wehan went close to adding to the Lobos’ lead as he had a pair of chances well saved, but Fisher’s early strike would be all New Mexico would need to take victory.
No. 6 WASHINGTON 4, GONZAGA 0: Sounders FC U23 forward Sean Okoli had a pair of goals as the Huskies took victory against the Bulldogs in Spokane, Wash.
Washington took the lead through an own goal in the 20th minute, and Okoli doubled the advantage a little more than 10 minutes later as he converted from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the area. The Puget Sound Gunners’ Josh Heard added to the Huskies’ lead with 15 minutes to go and Jones added a second in the final minute, again from the penalty spot.
No. 22 NORTH CAROLINA 3, No. 7 CALIFORNIA 1: Goals by the OC Pateadores Blues' Andy Craven, Carolina Dynamo’s Robbie Lovejoy, and Chicago Fire U-23’s Tyler Engel, led the Tar Heels past the Bears at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
raven and Lovejoy each had a goal and an assist, as Craven set up Engel for UNC’s opener in the 19th minute. Craven was then the beneficiary of Lovejoy’s through ball as he finished one-on-one to make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute. Cal pulled a goal back three minutes later through Christian Thierjung, but the Tar Heels put the game away with seven minutes to go as Lovejoy scored their third.
No. 17 COASTAL CAROLINA 3, No. 8 CONNECTICUT 2: K-W United’s Ricky Garbanzo had the game-winning goal and two assists as the Chanticleers scored an upset on the road at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
UConn took a two-goal lead through Cyle Larin and an own goal, but Coastal Carolina surged back as Garbanzo provided the assists on goals by the Carolina Dynamo’s Ollivier Gueguen in the 56th minute and Louis Dargent six minutes later. Garbanzo then struck with 18 minutes to go to lift the Chanticleers to a big non-conference win.
No. 9 GEORGETOWN 1, INDIANA 1: Baltimore Bohemians forward Brandon Allen scored the equalizer as the Hoyas earned a draw with the Hoosiers at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
Femi Hollinger-Janzen gave Indiana the lead in the 25th minute, but the Hoyas responded just before the hour mark as Allen was able to turn and shoot home after receiving a pass from Alex Muyl at the top of the penalty area. Orlando City U23 goalkeeper Tomas Gomez stood firm in overtime as he finished with three saves to earn Georgetown a draw.
