Wilmington Hammerheads News Release -- www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Friday, April 15, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.C. –The Wilmington Hammerheads kick off their 2011 USL PRO season against the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. After a year off, Saturday night’s game is being anxiously awaited by the Hammerheads’ coaches, players, staff and fans.

Saturday night’s game will be no easy task for the Hammerheads. “Rochester is a strong organization. They have an impressive history and have great leadership from Head Coach Bob Lilley” said Hammerheads head coach David Irving.

The Hammerheads and Rochester have a brief history together, only meeting once in the U.S. Open Cup in July, 2009, when Rochester emerged with a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals.

This season, Rochester once again has a strong line-up filled with several returning players. They have also added a few new faces to the roster that are expected to make a big impact, including forward Kendall Jagdeosignh and midfielder Tony Donatelli.

Jagdeosingh joined the Rhinos in February after spending the previous three seasons with the Puerto Rico Islanders. Donatelli will be a force in the midfield for Rochester this season after spending 2010 in Montreal. Jagdeosignh earned a title last season with the Islanders while Donatelli won with Vancouver in 2006 and with Montreal in 2009.

The Hammerheads look to Saturday with anticipation and excitement. Saturday night’s game will mark the start of Irving’s 12th season as head coach of the Hammerheads.

Over the past few months, Irving and assistant coach Kevin Johnson have recruited a talented squad for their 2011 season that will be sure to make a strong showing against Rochester.

The Hammerhead’s have picked up six players from the 2009 PDL Champions the Ventura County Fusion. Hammerheads team captain and former Fusion player, Ivan Becerra, has also spent time with the Portland Timbers and the Columbus Crew of the MLS. Becerra should be a dominant force in the back for Wilmington, along with fellow Fusion veteran Dylan Riley.

The Hammerheads have a strong midfield made up of former Fusion players Manny Guzman and Jack Avesyan, co-captain Paul Nicholson, former MLS draft pick Richard Jata, and Luke Mulholland.

In the attack, forwards Andres Cuero and Andryi Budnyy are expected to produce results for the Hammerheads. Cuero and Budnyy have earned their recognition in the preseason, both scoring goals in the Open House game on April 10th.

Jyler Noviello, Chris Murray, and Kyle Pollack are the only returning players from the Hammerhead’s 2009 squad on the 2011 team.

Legion Stadium Ribbon Cutting on New Turf

Before kick off on Saturday night, the City of Wilmington will hold a ceremony on the field to introduce the newly installed turf at Legion Stadium. Several important Wilmington City officials will be in attendance, including Wilmington’s Mayor, Bill Saffo.

Members of the New Hanover County School Board and representatives from New Hanover High School will also be in attendance to help dedicate the new turf field. Legion Stadium serves as the home field for both the Wilmington Hammerheads and the New Hanover High School Wildcats.

Game Night Promotions and Tickets

Saturday’s home opener is sponsored by Stevenson Automotive Group. Birthday Smiles, a non-profit organization that focuses on helping under-privileged children, will be in attendance serving as the game’s Non-Profit sponsor.

In coordination with the Coastal Carolina Air Show that will be in Wilmington on the 16th and 17th at the Wilmington International Airport, fans can enjoy a thrilling fly-over of Legion Stadium immediately following the National Anthem.

The ticket booth will open at 6 p.m. on Saturday night. Ticket prices for games are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (65+), and $6 for children 4 to12. Free admission is offered to children four and under. Special group ticket rates are available. Contact the Hammerheads office for more information, or visit www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com.

Morgan Primed for Big 2011 Season

The Western New York Flash make their Women’s Professional Soccer debut on Sunday against the Boston Breakers armed with a squad that could make the expansion club an immediate contender for the title.

Photo courtesty of Giampiero Sposito / ReutersAmong the team’s members are five-time Women’s World Player of the Year Marta, Canada’s Christine Sinclair, who was also nominated for the award this year, and Swedish captain Carolina Seger.

And then there’s this year’s WPS Draft No. 1 selection Alex Morgan. Just 21, and already a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team squad, Morgan is eager to begin her professional career with the expansion franchise.

“Coming into a new franchise, I think it’s good for me because I’m trying to figure out how I fit into this team but this team is figuring out how we want to play, how our style is going to be,” Morgan said. “I’m not just coming onto a team that’s been playing for a while, we’re all coming together and doing this together for the first time. I think that’s a really good thing and the owner and the coaching staff and everyone involved with the Flash has been great so far.”

Morgan previously played for the Pali Blues in the USL W-League, in addition to a standout career at the University of California that saw her be nominated as Hermann Award finalist in 2010. The atmosphere Charlie Naimo established in Pali, which has also featured current young USWNT players Tobin Heath and Lauren Cheney in recent seasons, is something that Morgan believes will help her as she moves into the professional ranks.

“The way he represented the team was in a very professional manner, and it kind of replicates the way a lot of these [WPS] teams are run,” Morgan said. “Even though it was only a W-League team, not a WPS team, it was still a very professional environment and the girls were very serious about each game and their roles on the team, so it’s definitely prepared me a little bit as well as college and being with the national team.”

Morgan is also eager to learn from players like Sinclair and Marta. While the Brazilian only arrived with the club today, Sinclair’s influence is already having an impact on Morgan’s game.

“Sinclair is one of the best forwards in the world, and I just think I can learn so much from her,” Morgan said. “She’s great holding the ball and holding defenders off and I’ve really had to learn that and improve my game in that specific area, so that’s great to watch. She’s a ball-winner in the air as well and gets herself in great positions.”

Whether Morgan will get to use that new-found knowledge at the Women’s World Cup this season is yet to be seen. While she has been a consistent member of the squad for the past six months, Morgan is not taking anything for granted when it comes to her selection to the squad for Germany.

The experience she’s gained, along with the rest of the team, through competing in CONCACAF qualifying, the Cyprus Cup and the team’s recent trip to Great Britain is going to be valuable if she is selected.

“I think that we’ve learned a lot from Pia and the coaching staff, and as a team we’ve learned a lot about each other,” Morgan said. “Being together so much this year from the time in Portugal to England, we’ve been together a lot in the past few months and that’s helped the team chemistry and I think being together a lot can only help the team.

“I also think that we’ve learned what our roles were, because we have a pretty set starting lineup and then you have the roles or whether it’s on the bench, coming in for the last 20 minutes or starting, everyone contributes to the team winning and I think that’s important for everyone to recognize. We’ve really been recognizing that because we’ve played so many games in the past few months.”

For now, though, Morgan is focused on helping the Flash find success in the club’s first season in WPS.

“As of right now, I’m just looking forward to our first game in the WPS against Boston this weekend,” she said. “Of course, we’re anticipating our home opener, but right now we’ve really been preparing for our first game against Boston and that’s what I’m really looking forward to because that will be my first professional game with my new team.”

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Friday, April 15, 2011

RICHMOND, Va. -- Matthew Delicâte scored his third goal of the season to give the Richmond Kickers their third win of the USL PRO season as they defeated the Rochester Rhinos in a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Richmond City Stadium on Friday night.

Neither side was able to enjoy a spell of possession in the opening minutes of the first half, and it wasn’t until the 24th minute that the Kickers were able to break down Rochester’s defense. Following a Richmond free kick, Stanley Nyazamba crossed a ball into the penalty area for Delicâte, who curled a header over Rochester goalkeeper Neal Kitson and into the net for a 1-0 lead. The game opened up for both teams after the goal, but there were few goalscoring opportunities before halftime.

Rochester applied more attacking pressure after the restart, but were unable to fashion a clear-cut scoring chance until the final 10 minutes when Rochester substitute Andrew Hoxie’s low shot was punched away by Kickers ’keeper Ronnie Pascale. The Rhinos nearly capitalized from the resulting corner, but defender Troy Roberts’ header found the left post before it was eventually cleared. The Richmond defense was able to keep the Rhinos at bay to move to 3-0-0 on the season.

Coach Leigh Cowlishaw said he was satisfied with the victory, despite it not being the Kickers’ best performance.

“I’m pleased we defended resolutely and we found a way to win,” Cowlishaw said. “To get the third win on the bounce, you can’t ask for anything more.”

“We’re happy with how we played against a good team," Rochester coach Bob Lilley said. "It was our first game of the year. Obviously, it’s always disappointing when you don’t win, but I can’t fault our guys for the effort.”

The Rhinos will look to rebound from the loss in time for their game against the Wilmington Hammerheads on Saturday.

The Kickers will be back in action next Saturday at 5 p.m., as they host the Charleston Battery at Richmond City Stadium. For more information, visit www.richmondkickers.com.

USL News Release

Friday, April 15, 2011

JUNCOS, Puerto Rico – Three second-half goals gave the Los Angeles Blues victory in their first game in USL PRO as Cesar Rivera, Gerardo Bravo and Walter Gaitan each found the back of the net for a 3-0 victory against Sevilla FC Puerto Rico on Friday night at the Estadio Josue ’Elevadito’ Gonzalez.

Los Angeles pressed for the opening goal throughout the first half, forcing Sevilla goalkeeper Maximiliano Torlacoff into five saves to keep the game scoreless at the break. The breakthrough for the Blues came five minutes after the break, however, as Rivera scored the first goal in franchise history.

Sevilla tried to find a way back into the game but weren’t able to properly test Los Angeles goalkeeper Oscar Dautt, who didn’t have to make a second-half save.

The Blues then put the game away in the final 10 minutes. Bravo, who had entered as a second-half substitute for Josh Tudela, doubled Los Angeles’ advantage in the 81st minute. Former Tigres standout Gaitan then added his first goal of the season in stoppage time.

The Blues, who are opening the season with a four-game road trip against their International Division rivals, will try to build on the success of their opening game on Sunday as they face Antigua Barracuda FC at 7 p.m.

Antigua will also be the next opponent for Sevilla, which will travel to Antigua on Thursday aiming to rebound from its first loss of the season.

Van Hoeven Building The Dutch Lions

By NICHOLAS MURRAY

When the Dayton Dutch Lions take to the field on Saturday night for the first professional game in the club’s history, it will mark the culmination of a hard six months of work by the club’s staff and most notably Technical Director Cor van Hoeven.

Formerly an assistant coach in both the Dutch and Finnish Premier Leagues, a head coach in the Dutch second division as well as an instructor in the Royal Dutch National Soccer Association, van Hoeven was brought in to help the club continue to build its philosophy of playing and teaching the game in the manner that has made the Netherlands one of the foremost soccer nations.

For van Hoeven, the chance to come and build a club in the Dutch style was too good an opportunity to pass up.

“I trained some of the guys, we had some special training sessions with the guys and I knew them and they were very positive about next season, so I was interested to come to Dayton and work with the side,” van Hoeven said by phone. “Also the idea of the Academy, that is one of the things I like, to work with the young kids and to develop young kids with the special training techniques. It was, for me, very important to work with the first team and the academy kids to build our own soccer school to do technical training with the young kids and help them develop.”

Building a team for the 2011 USL PRO season, though, was a challenge. With only a handful of players from the club’s 2010 Premier Development League side making the move to the next level with the club, it left van Hoeven and Coach Ivar van Dinteren to assemble a squad that would not only allow the club to try and play in the style the club was aiming for, but also gave the Dutch Lions the ability to build the club long-term.

“Last year was the first year and a lot of things have changed,” van Hoeven said. “We’re now playing on a higher level so it was not easy to find the right players and also the system. With the tryouts, it’s sometimes difficult to see a player and evaluate him in the right way, so that was the big challenge, to bring a group together who can play in our philosophy, especially with the techniques and the tactics.”

What it resulted in is a very young, malleable squad that van Hoeven hopes will be around for a while and grow with the club. The average age of the 20 players on opening day will be just under 23 years old, which means the club’s more experienced players, like former Cleveland City Stars player Kolby LaCrone and Bahamian international Happy Hall, will have a role to play in helping the club against some of the more established teams in the league.

“The older players, like Happy, are going to be very important,” van Hoeven said. “The young players, they have their ups and downs. Sometimes they can play very good, the next match they can be not very good, and that’s part of being a young team. For all the players that have the experience to lead the team on the field and around the field, it’s very important to have those older players.”

The first test will come from the 2010 USL-2 champion Charleston Battery, not exactly the easiest team to meet in your first professional contest. But van Hoeven is looking forward to the challenge.

“I like it,” he said. “It’s a challenge, especially for a young team. Hopefully we can play with a young team and not be anxious, not be afraid and show what they can and believe in themselves. I’m looking forward to it, I’m sure they will be a very good opponent and this is the first serious test for us to see how far this team has come in its preparations.”

The club’s plan, though, is for much more than one game, or even one season.

“We don’t have a goal that we’ve set,” van Hoeven said. “First, if we can play in the middle, if we can play the tough games, if we can develop the team. Again, we’re looking further than this season. If we can keep a group of players for next season and make that next step, that’s the most important thing for this year.”

Charlotte Eagles News Release -- www.charlotteeagles.com

Saturday, April 16, 2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Eagles fell in the opening game of their home campaign of the 2011 USL PRO season as Orlando City took a 1-0 victory at Charlotte Christian Stadium on Saturday night.  Rob Valentino scored the only goal of the game in the first half off a deflected corner kick.

After the Eagles opened well, Orlando quickly found their composure to even out the game. Orlando's Max Griffin almost found the back of the net in the 29th minute, forcing a corner kick. From the corner, the Eagles were unable to clear the ball into the penalty area and Valentino settled the ball and fired home from four yards out.

Charlotte’s Chris Salvaggione had a few outstanding efforts on goal, but the Eagles struggled to find many openings in the Lions defense which recorded its second straight shutout.

After a morning of thunderstorms and torrential downpours, the day cleared just in time for the Eagles’ home opener. The Eagles’ fans braved the strong winds and a cold night to watch two very evenly matched teams.

The Eagles began the game with a lot of momentum. Walter Moore and Salleiu Bundu were able to connect a few passes in the first minute to give Orlando an early scare. Following Bundu’s initial shot the Eagles were able to build a few positive possessions, but weren’t able to find a breakthrough.

Though the Eagles ended the half down by a goal, they looked strong as they sought the right chemistry to find a goal.

Eagles coach Mark Steffens changed things up with Miguel Ferrer, Alan Sanchez and Luke Williams starting the second half, but the game had a slower feel as both the Eagles and the Lions struggled to mount any scoring opportunities.

Salvaggione was first to test Orlando goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo in the second half with a rifle of a shot from twenty yards out.

Charlotte goalkeeper Eric Reed was tested once in the second half, making a great save in the 83rd minute, but Valentino’s goal would prove to be the only goal the Lions would need.

The Eagles will try to find their first win of the season next Saturday as they host F.C. New York at 7 p.m. at Charlotte Christian Stadium. The Lions, who have now won two consecutive games after falling in their opener, will next host Puerto Rico United on Friday night at the Citrus Bowl at 7:30 p.m.

Battery Too Much For Dutch Lions

Dayton Dutch Lions FC News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Saturday, April 16, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Charleston Battery proved to be too much for the Dayton Dutch Lions in their USL PRO season opener as Nicki Paterson had a goal and an assist for the Battery in a 2-1 victory at the Miami Valley South Stadium on Saturday night. Weather conditions during the match were relentless as the rain and wind continued throughout the entirety of the match.

Both sides were unable to completely control possession of the ball in the first half. The Lions’ offense was unable to gain momentum as Charleston’s defense shut down its attack. Both teams had trouble finding and creating scoring opportunities and the game was scoreless at the break.

Charleston came out strongly to start the second half as Paterson opened the scoring in the 46th minute. Dayton goalkeeper Jesper Leerdam was able to deflect the initial shot on goal, only for Paterson to score on the rebound. The Battery continued to attack and scored again in the 58th minute as Paterson’s free kick from the left was headed home by Colin Falvey.

As weather conditions worsened midway through the second half the Dutch Lions began to find their rythm. Trying to find their way back into the match, Dutch native Lucien Seymour connected in the 65th minute with Kolby LaCrone to pull a goal back.

The Dutch continued their offensive push looking to equalize late in the second half, but Charleston’s defense held firm as goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra made a good late save, and the Dutch Lions’ first game in the professional ranks ended in defeat. The victory was the Battery’s second straight to start the season.

“It’s disappointing to lose the first game," Dutch Lions Owner Mike Mossel said. "It is a game we should not have lost. The two goals were our own mistakes, but on the other hand we didn’t play good ourselves. We didn’t deserve a win tonight. Despite the cold and the rain, we are happy we still had over 1.000 spectators supporting us."

The Dutch Lions will look to better their fortune in their next match as they host the Rochester Rhinos next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. For more information visit www.dutchlionsfc.com.

Los Angeles Blues News Release -- www.bluessoccerclub.com

Sunday, April 17, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The atmosphere in the Los Angeles Blues locker room following the team’s 3-0 victory over hosts Sevilla FC Puerto Rico on Friday night was one of sheer jubilation. As many had predicted ahead of the club’s first match in USL PRO, the old artificial turf at Josué ’Elevadito’ González Stadium in Juncos, Puerto Rico, had kept the visitors from playing their preferred possession game throughout the 90 minutes. Yet, Head Coach Charlie Naimo’s men managed to rise to the challenge and start the season on the right foot.

“The pitch wasn’t in the best condition, so the game turned out a physical battle with a lot of fouls,” recapped Naimo. “There were some questionable calls, but for the most part the refs called the game evenly and we just gave away a few too many set play opportunities.”

However, overall Naimo was happy with the team’s ability to adapt to the circumstances by marking up tightly and then quickly transitioning into the attack.

“We held our ground defensively,” he said. “The only chances they had came from those set plays. They had some really big boys in the back, so they brought them forward whenever they could. But for the most part we stood up to the physical challenge, absorbed the pressure and played just enough good soccer to create quality chances. In the first half alone, we could have been up two or three-nil. We created several hundred-percent chances that we didn’t finish.”

However, the Blues attackers would redeem themselves after the break. In the 50th minute, forward Cesar Rivera hit an absolute stunner from about 40 yards out that caught goalkeeper Maximiliano Torlacoff out of position and gave the visitors the lead. Then, 10 minutes from time, Gerardo Bravo-Benavides put the hard-fought match out of reach on an assist from Argentine star Walter Gaitán. Finally, Gaitán slotted one home himself in the 88th minute of play, following a defensive giveaway by the hosts and a nice heel-pass by Akeem Priestley.

After the final whistle, defender Josh Suggs didn’t think twice about who he thought the best attacker on the field had been for the Blues.

“Walter (Gaitán) had an excellent game tonight and proved that he is still a world-class footballer,” the 21-year-old said. “There were times in the game when I almost forgot to pay attention to what was going on around me because I was so in shock over something Walter was doing.”

However, Suggs was also sure to praise the entire team’s performance on the day.

“We were able to adapt to the tough circumstances we were provided with,” he said. “That’s what separates good teams from great teams. We were forced to stray from our traditional style of play because of the lack of quality of the field, but we were still able to grind out the victory.”

The sentiment was echoed by Suggs’s teammate Leonard Griffin.

“Getting three points on the road is a fantastic start to the season,” the former Los Angeles Galaxy defender said. “They came out fighting hard as expected. I think it took us the first half to really get a feel for the field conditions and for how Sevilla play. Then in the second half, we were able to settle in a bit and play the way we wanted. Staying solid defensively, staying patient and scoring some amazing goals helped us come out on top.

“If we can continue to stay tuned in for 90 minutes defensively, I know our offense will continue to take care of business as they did tonight. I think the next game needs to be more of the same. Maybe we could even try to get on the board a little earlier and then continue to keep the other team at zero.”

That other team will be Antigua Barracuda FC, as Naimo’s men have little time to celebrate with more travel and then today’s game in the Antigua and Barbuda capital of St. John’s on the horizon. Having tasted first blood in Puerto Rico, the Blues now head into their second Caribbean clash with high expectations and plenty of confidence.

“Today’s game was a huge win for our club,” said Blues captain Josh Tudela. “To be able to come into Puerto Rico and get a 3-0 win in our first game of the season is a huge accomplishment. Sevilla put up a very good fight, but all of our guys played well both individually and as a unit. I’m very proud of the team for that. Now it’s time to start getting ready for Antigua and make sure we walk away with another win.”

“To be honest, we don’t know that much about Antigua Barracuda FC," Suggs added. "But we’ll head into the game with a winning attitude and determined to earn the same feeling we earned tonight. Of course, it would help to have a better field this time so we can play our type of game and control possession of the ball.”

Following the strong performance by his team in Puerto Rico, even Naimo was able to briefly hold back on his critical coach’s perspective.

“I can’t really say we need to work on anything in particular after tonight’s match,” he offered. “I was really proud of the way the guys battled, because it was a very tough and physical game. Now we just want to get everybody healthy and well rested and then we’ll be ready for the next challenge.”

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Wilmington Hammerheads defeated the Rochester Rhinos 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal by Luke Mulholland at Legion Stadium on Sunday afternoon, giving the Hammerheads a victorious return to the field as they opened the 2011 USL PRO season.

The Hammerheads' home opener against the Rhinos was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed until Sunday due to severe weather in the Wilmington area.

The Hammerheads controlled most of the first half as they played with patience and had several scoring opportunities in Rochester’s penalty area that they were unable to finish. Rochester goalkeeper Neal Kitson notched four saves in Sunday’s game, but the Hammerheads also saw a number of chances miss the target.

Both teams picked up the game’s tempo as the first half drew to a close, and that continued at the start of the second half. The Hammerheads had a goal ruled out due to an offside call, but shortly after Mulholland stole the ball in the Rhinos' penalty area and fired home for what would prove to be the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute. It was the former Wingate University standout's first professional goal.

Rochester showed an increased urgency as the second half wore one and had several opportunities in the Hammerheads penalty area. Hammerhead goalkeeper Brock Duckworth kept Wilmington alive, posting three crucial second-half saves in his professional debut, including a spectacular save to deny Andrew Hoxie late in the game.

Rochester’s Tony Donatelli recorded three shots on goal and Tyler Rosenlund and Michael Tanke each had one shot on goal against the Hammerheads. The four minutes of stoppage time was dominated by Rochester, but the Rhinos were unable to put the ball in the back of the net and fell to their second defeat of the weekend after falling 1-0 to the Richmond Kickers on Friday night.

Wilmington will try to build on its opening victory when it returns to the field on Friday, April 29 as it hosts the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Legion Field. Rochester will travel to face the Dayton Dutch Lions next Saturday.

Antigua Barracuda FC News Release -- www.antiguabarracudafc.com

Sunday, April 17, 2011

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua - Antigua Barracuda FC went under to two set plays as the Los Angeles Blues took a 2-1 victory at the Sticky Wicket Stadium on Sunday night in Antigua's first game in USL PRO. Walter Gaitan scored twice for the Blues, scoring on a magnificent free kick in the 32nd minute to draw level after the home team went ahead in the 16th minute, a strong finish by Tamarley Thomas that sent the home crowd into rapturous joy.

Gaitain then added a second-half penalty in the 78th minute to seal the victory for the visitors, giving him three goals in two matches.

Perfect conditions for football presented itself at the Sticky Wicket Stadium, in front of a crowd numbering more than six thousand. Eager to see their new USL PRO team display a good performance, they cheered every move and telling pass.

Both teams were slow off the mark but Barracuda FC set the stage early, as they were not prepared to give the Blues time on the ball to make their silky passes even as the visitors controlled most of the play.

It was an interception as a result of the pressure exerted on the Blues that resulted in the first goal and although surrounded by two defenders, Antiguan international Tamarley Thomas still managed to out muscle the pair and shoot home.

Not daunted by being a goal down the visitors continued to string passes around the field looking for an opening but it was impressive to see the discipline of the home side in keeping their shape and defending well.

However an infringement five yards outside the penalty box presented Gaitan his first opportunity to strike at goal and he did not disappoint. Goalkeeper Molvin James had no chance as the ball was in the back of the net having cleared the wall and dipped sharply to draw the Blues level in the 32nd minute.

The visitors immediately after the break controlled the lion share of the possession and the local boys with all the running in the legs were beginning to struggle to keep up the pace. However it took an unfortunate handball to seal the deal and Gaitan secured his brace to make it two wins in as many games for the Blues.

“It was a game of two halves as the Antigua team pressed us very well and were impressive in the first half," Blues coach Charlie Naimo said. "Our boys were not settled enough and we needed to be more relaxed in our approach and by doing that we took control of the game in the second half. The playing conditions were also a welcome change and we have been very impressed with how we have been treated here in Antigua.”

Walter Gaitan, speaking through an interpreter, said he enjoyed the game, especially the second half and was pleased to have helped his team to its second victory in as many games

“This is a very good team and we have nothing to be ashamed about," Antigua Barracuda coach Tom Curtis said. "Our boys are having a first time experience, they fought hard, ran their sox off, and despite all the possession, it took to set plays to crack us open. We can learn from this experience, we will be better for it.”

Captain and inspirational leader of the Antigua Barracuda FC George Dublin said, “We are disappointed but not down, we had the chances to win but it did not fall for us tonight, we will build on this first game. We will get this behind us quickly as we have a game on Thursday, we will be doing our best to get our first win for the fans. They were great tonight.”

Antigua Barracuda FC will play Sevilla FC Puerto Rico on Thursday night and with both teams seeking to register their first victory for the 2011 USL PRO season.

USL News Release

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues is pleased to announce the launch of www.majorbeachsoccer.com, a dynamic new portal devoted to USL’s Major Beach Soccer tournament series as well as all things beach soccer. The new site replaces the former Soccer on the Beach site on the heels of USL’s recent partnership with Soccer on the Beach.

Highlights of majorbeachsoccer.com include a clean design and modern look, allowing for easy navigation through the various sections including Schedule, Registration, About MBS, and Camps. Each of the three 2011 MBS tournaments, supported by Umbro, are highlighted in the rotating news section in the center of the page. The 2011 Major Beach Soccer Series includes Florida stops in Daytona Beach (June 17-19), Clearwater (July 15-17) and Fort Myers Beach (August 5-7).

“We are excited to provide a new window to the world of beach soccer,” USL Director of Beach Soccer Eddie Loewen said. “This new site reflects the beach soccer lifestyle and is extremely user-friendly and functional, which makes it easy to register for events and find necessary information regarding the venues, tournament schedules, hotels and entertainment options.”

The new site can be accessed directly or through www.uslsoccer.com, and includes a Facebook feed and a countdown clock tracking the days until the 2011 Major Beach Soccer tournament series kicks off in June. The site also links to USL Live, the online video platform that will feature highlights from this year’s MBS Series.

Major Beach Soccer arrives on the scene as a result of last year’s acquisition of “Soccer on the Beach” by USL. In 1993, current USL Technical Director Peter Mellor, who has continuously and successfully carried the torch for grassroots beach soccer in the United States and continues to play an integral role in the strategic development and event operations of MBS, founded Soccer on the Beach. Earlier this year, FIFA Beach Soccer Instructor and World Cup veteran Loewen joined USL to oversee the daily management of the MBS property.

In the coming years, USL intends to expand MBS regionally and nationally to develop new beach soccer tournaments, leagues, and other competitions for participants at every level. Further, it will conduct educational and developmental programs to grow this sport in the U.S., and provide structure and unity to the sport by adapting the FIFA laws of the game.

D.C. United Women News Release - www.dcuwomen.com

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

GERMANTOWN, MD - Former college standout and W-League Champion Cindi Harkes has been named as the first assistant coach of D.C. United Women, joining head coach Michael Jorden in leading the new W-League team when it begins its first-ever season in May.

"Cindi is a top-class coach with extensive experience helping young women develop into outstanding soccer players," said D.C. United Women General Manager Tim Schweitzer. "Her experience as a successful college player and former W-League player will be crucial in helping Mike develop a team that will be exciting to watch."

"This is a tremendous opportunity, and I'm excited to once again be a part of top level soccer in Washington," Harkes said. "I've played and coached in this area for a long time, so I know this region is rich with soccer talent. I'm looking forward to helping build a successful franchise with D.C. United Women. It all starts this Saturday with our first tryouts."

Harkes and her husband John, the former captain of D.C. United and now an ESPN soccer game commentator, are long-time youth coaches in Northern Virginia. She played travel soccer in Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC) in Fairfax, and in 2008 was named to the Virginia-D.C. Soccer Hall of Fame as a player.

A three-time Virginia State Cup champion as a youth, Harkes comes from a successful soccer family. Her father, Ron Kunihiro, was a long-time coach with BRYC, including Cindi's Regional championship team, BRYC Galaxies. Her brother Tim was also a standout player, winning state and regional titles with BRYC and the VISTA Force and played four years at the University of Virginia.

Cindi was a member of the Virginia and Regional Olympic Development Program teams and was named to the U19 U.S. Youth National Team. She was a four year starter at WT Woodson High School - where she was "Athlete of the Year" her senior year - and was a three-time Washington Post All-Met player.

At the University of Virginia, Harkes was a four year starter, a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference team selection and an NCAA Academic All-American.

She then traveled to England to compete with the Sheffield Wednesday Ladies and the Stanton Rangers. Harkes later returned to the United States and played for the Maryland Pride which won the inaugural W-League title in 1996 and won three U.S. Amateur Soccer Association national championship titles with SA United. In 2003 she was a player-coach of the Northern Virginia Majestics of the W-League.

Cindi is co-founder of the TeamHarkes Soccer School for Girls summer camps, and currently serves as Director of Coaching for FC Virginia, while also coaching the club's U14 and U11 girls teams.

Harkes has already been hard at work with coach Jorden at team staff identifying players. The full staff will get their first chance to see prospective players in action this Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex, where the first open tryout will be held. Tryout registration will be limited to the first 50 players registered through the team website at www.dcunitedwomen.com.

D.C. United Women will draw players from a large pool of elite college-bound and active college standouts, international stars and former professionals. With numerous notable veteran stars and top collegiate programs in the Washington metro area, expectations will be high when United takes the field this summer.

The team opens the season on May 25th with a visit to the 2005 W-League Champions, New Jersey Wildcats. The club will kick off its home season on Thursday, June 9th with a rematch against the Wildcats at 7:00 pm. United Women will play their home matches at the SoccerPlex's Championship Stadium.

D.C. United Women fill the vacancy left by the departure of the Washington Freedom Futures and will play their home matches at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown, Md. Also the former home of the WPS Washington Freedom, the Soccerplex is an ideal showcase for women's minor league soccer in the D.C. metropolitan area.
