Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Thursday, April 7, 2011

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds open the 2011 USL PRO season in Richmond squaring off against the Kickers (1-0-0). The Riverhounds return to City Stadium for a rematch of last year’s semifinal playoff game, which ended the Hounds’ season. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. kick-off.

The Riverhounds head to Richmond with a healthy and talented first team. Coach Justin Evans is returning 11 core players from last year’s squad and has added some experience through his off-season acquisitions.

Returning for the Riverhounds from last year’s squad are 2010 USL Goalkeeper of the Year Hunter Gilstrap, Defender of the Year Shintaro Harada and Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton. 2011 also sees the return of defenders Jason Kutney, Louie Rolko, Sterling Flunder, Nikola Katic and Mike Seth, midfielder Tommy Gray and Matt Tuttle and forward Chad Severs.

Pittsburgh has also added experience, with Thabiso ‘Boyzzz’ Khumalo, Kyle Veris, Jason Yeisley and Sammy Appiah all having appeared in Major League Soccer. There are also some rookies, with Ben Horner, Matt Fondy, Neil Shaffer, Greg Blum, Derek Yobbi, Stefan Lundberg and Jason Straw all entering their first professional season.

Richmond is playing in its second game of the 2011 season, coming off a 2-0 home win last weekend against Orlando City. The Kickers are returning many quality players from 2010, including Offensive MVP Matt Delicâte, goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale, and midfielders Luke Vercollone and Mike Burke. The Kickers have added a few talented players themselves in the off-season to strengthen their team and increase their depth.

The meeting between the Riverhounds and Kickers has drawn quite a bit of attention and should bring an intense atmosphere to Richmond’s City Stadium.

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Thursday, April 7, 2011

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to welcome the Pittsburgh Riverhounds this Saturday, April 9 at 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring their four-legged companions along with them for a night of fun and professional soccer. Avoid lines at the gate and order tickets in advance at RichmondKickers.com.

"After last week’s performance, the team is full of confidence; however, we recognize Pittsburgh will be a difficult match-up,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. “They return nearly all of their starters and have added several quality players. They were one of our toughest opponents last year and we expect an even harder challenge this season.”

The Kickers opened the USL PRO season with an emphatic 2-0 win over Orlando City last weekend. Midfielder Stanley Nyazamba notched the first USL PRO goal of the season when Ryan Heins drew a foul inside the penalty area. Later, defender Sascha Görres teamed up with goal-scoring sensation, Matthew Delicâte, to add the second tally. Pittsburgh opens their 2011 regular season this weekend in Richmond.

Overall, the Kickers hold a record of 12-7-3 over the Riverhounds, with a rivalry dating back to 1999 when the two franchises competed in the USL First Division. Pittsburgh edged Richmond 2-1-1 during the 2010 regular season with the Kickers earning their eighth league championship bid in nine years after a decisive 2-0 win over the Riverhounds in last year’s playoff semifinals.

Richmond concluded the regular season with a record of 9-5-6 and 33 points, five points behind Charleston who earned a bye and the right to host the title match, edging the Kickers 2-1 for the championship crown. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh found their way back to the USL-2 playoffs last season for the first time since 2006. Clinching the final playoff seed in 2010 out of a field of six teams, the Riverhounds posted a 5-2-3 record in the second half of the campaign.

Players to Watch

Kickers: Newcomer Mike Callahan was named the USL PRO Player of the Week for his integral role in the Kickers 2-0 win over Orlando. Joining the Kickers lineup late last week, Callahan spent two seasons with the Austin Aztex after concluding his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina. The 2008 USL-2 Rookie of the Year, Stanley Nyazamba, recorded the first goal in the new season when he converted a penalty kick against Orlando City last week, earning USL PRO Team of the Week honors. Defender William Yomby secured the Kickers backline, leading the defense to their first shutout in the season, holding Orlando to just two shots on goal. Japanese international Nozomi Hiroyama is slated to appear this weekend after arriving in Richmond earlier this week. Hiroyama brings a wealth of experience to Richmond, with a professional career that spans four continents and a pair of caps with the full Japanese National Team.

Riverhounds: Pittsburgh welcomes back Thabiso “Boyzzz” Khumalo, who returns after a two-year stint with Major League Soccer’s D.C. United. The 30-year old South African was named one of the Top 10 USL PRO Players to Watch last week by Soccer America. The 2010 USL-2 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton led the Riverhounds with 29 shots, scoring five goals, en route to their first postseason appearance since 2006. With six shutouts in 18 appearances and a second-best 1.00 goals against average in 2010, goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap earned USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year honors last season. Gilstrap partners with defender Shintaro Harada who will shore up the Riverhounds defense again in 2011 after claiming USL-2 Defender of the Year honors.

SPCA Paws on the Pitch Night

Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the Kickers fourth annual SPCA Paws on the Pitch night this Saturday, presented by Chipotle. The Richmond SPCA Tail Wag’N adoption vehicle will be in attendance, seeking to match homeless pets with new adopters. Pet-friendly vendors will also be present and the Richmond SPCA humane education mascot, Waggles, will mingle with fans.

Founded in 1891, the Richmond SPCA is central Virginia’s oldest non-profit, no-kill humane organization dedicated to the principle that every life is precious. As a national leader in humane education and care, the Richmond SPCA is aggressively tackling the problem of pet overpopulation through adoption, rehabilitation and spay/neuter. USL News Release

Thursday, April 7, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues is pleased to welcome LA Blues 23 to the Premier Development League for the 2011 season. The Blues are replacing the Hollywood United Hitmen, who were removed from the 2011 PDL schedule.

Photo by Ben HooperLA Blues 23 will compete as a professional team in 2011, operating as a reserve squad for the Los Angeles Blues of USL PRO. The setup is similar to that of the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS, who also operate a professional team in the PDL in addition to a team operating in a USSF-sanctioned pro league. LA Blues 23 has assumed the 2011 PDL schedule originally announced for Hollywood United, with minor adjustments. The Blues will play the majority of their schedule at Stadium by the Sea in Pacific Palisades.

“We have immediately improved the strength and quality of the already formidable PDL Southwest Division with the addition of LA Blues 23,” USL President Tim Holt said. “As they have demonstrated with the Pali Blues of the W-League and thus far with the Los Angeles Blues of USL PRO, the ownership and management of the Los Angeles Blues are dedicated to running a first-class operation and putting a winner on the field.”

LA Blues 23 will compete in the Western Conference’s Southwest Division, perennially one of the strongest divisions in the PDL. Among their regular season opponents, LA Blues 23 will face the 2009 PDL champion Ventura County Fusion, as well as the BYU Cougars, Fresno Fuego, Los Angeles Legends, Ogden Outlaws, Orange County Blue Star and Southern California Seahorses.

The operation of LA Blues 23 will be overseen by Vijay Dias, a former Indiana University player and experienced soccer administrator. Dias will be supported by the USL PRO team’s general manager, Alyse LaHue, and Charlie Naimo, vice president & head coach of the USL PRO Blues, as well as a nationally respected coach and player personnel executive at all levels of elite soccer in the U.S.

During the past seven W-League seasons, Naimo amassed an astounding 87-10-7 regular season coaching record with multiple teams, including three regular season championships and three W-League titles. In 2008, he led the Pali Blues to a perfect record in the W-League and the league championship.

"We are happy to be adding a pro PDL team to our organization,” Naimo said. “There were many tough decisions that were made as we put together the USL PRO side and with this addition we hope we can provide more opportunity while we strengthen our base of talent."

The unparalleled premier U23 men’s league in North America, the USL Premier Development League will feature 64 teams within four conferences across the United States and Canada in 2011. The PDL provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility.

The top supplier of talent for professional soccer in North America, the PDL saw another large group of its alumni make the move into professional soccer recently with 37 of the 54 players selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft having previously played in the PDL. A remarkable eight of the first 10 selections in the draft had PDL experience.

Los Angeles Blues News Release -- www.bluessoccerclub.com

Thursday, April 7, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Blues are proud to announce the signing of Edwin Miranda for the 2011 USL PRO season, pending USSF and USL approval.

For Miranda the move is a return home, as the Salvadoran grew up in the San Fernando Valley and played his college ball at Cal State-Northridge. He was drafted by Major League Soccer's Dallas Burn in 2004 and has since moved on to an impressive professional career of nearly 150 matches in the USL First Division and the USSF Division 2-Pro League as well as several appearances with the El Salvador national team.

After starting for the Portland Timbers in 2004 and 2005, Miranda enjoyed a highly successful three-year stint with the Puerto Rico Islanders, crowned with a championship in his final season. The midfielder donned the jersey of Miami FC in 2009 and helped the PDL’s Hollywood United Hitmen reach the playoffs the following year. After the 2010 PDL season, Miranda returned to Puerto Rico just in time to help the Islanders to another championship.

“Edwin was on our radar for a long time,” Vice President and Head Coach Charlie Naimo offered. “After he touched base with us about a month ago, we made some changes to make room for him on the roster. Edwin gives us depth at the holding midfield position, but he’s also very versatile and can move to center back. Combined with his experience and his track record of success, that makes him a very good fit for us.”

Meanwhile, Miranda cherishes being back in Los Angeles. “I’ve played at this level for about seven years, but it was always away from home,” he explained. “So to have a new team in LA was a fantastic opportunity. I had a few options on the table, including staying in Puerto Rico, but I really wanted to play for the Blues. Of course I realize that’s also a tremendous responsibility. Since I know the USL inside-out, I need to step up as a leader in the locker room and help the new guys out wherever I can.”

With all his experience, the 30-year-old likes the Blues’ chances in 2011. “We’re looking very good, especially for being a first-year team. Obviously the players are still getting to know each other, so we haven’t reached our full potential yet. In addition to working hard in training, we also need to become close friends off the field. I believe that’s huge in trying to build a unit on the field.

“It’s hard to make predictions for a league with so many new teams. But the club and the coaches have put such a great roster together that I honestly think we have the potential to win it all this year. I can’t wait for the season to get started.”

The Blues kick off their campaign with a four-game road swing in the Caribbean, starting with an April 15 match at Sevilla FC Puerto Rico. The team’s home opener at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Stadium is on May 1 at 5 p.m. against Antigua Barracuda FC. Season tickets, flex plans and individual game tickets can be purchased online or by calling 310-264-4649.

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Friday, April 8, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando City holds its first ever USL PRO regular season home opener on Saturday at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The inaugural opponent is USL PRO expansion side F.C. New York, playing in its first ever match.

The Lions are looking to rebound from their season opening 2-0 loss to American Division rival the Richmond Kickers. After the disappointing road result, Head Coach Adrian Heath expects a much-improved performance.

“We took some things for granted [against Richmond],” said Heath. “We spoke long and hard with the players about it. I expect every one of our players that played last week to be much better this week. I guarantee you’ll see a completely different, much improved team.”

The Lions will be relying on improved play from the entire team, but the key player for City will be Cuban midfielder Yordany Alvarez. Alvarez is the engine of the Orlando City machine, providing the vital link between the Orlando City defense and its aggressive and adventurous attack. If Alvarez is able to control the midfield, Orlando will control the game.

F.C. New York remains a bit of a mystery. The team has yet to play a regulation match, so their style of play and key players remain unknown. Still, the Lions are not taking the Empire State club lightly.

“It’s very much into the unknown for us,” said Heath. “We’ll be prepared for every eventuality. We expect them to be very excited as well, since it’s their first match. We won’t take that for granted.”

Tomorrow’s match also marks the debut of Orlando City on USL Live. USL Live is the United Soccer Leagues online video service. For no charge, fans will be able to watch both live and archived matches. The majority of Orlando City matches will be available on the service during the season, including all 12 home matches. For more information on USL Live, visit www.usllive.com.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - This weekend F.C. New York is playing for Japan.

The team will wear a special kit with the Red Cross featured prominently on the chest. The clubs hopes to raise funds in three ways. Secondly, for each F.C. New York goal scored against Orlando City, F.C. New York donates $100 to the relief effort. Finally, the club will auction off each player’s jersey after the match and the player whose jersey brings the highest price will add an additional $100 to the total.

Friday, April 8, 2011

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that striker Sydney Leroux has been signed to the club’s roster for the 2011 United Soccer Leagues (USL) W-League campaign - pending United States Soccer Federation (USSF) approval.

Leroux, 20, returns to Whitecaps FC after originally playing for the team during the 2005 W-League season. The native of Surrey, British Columbia, is the youngest player to ever play for the club at the senior level. The 5-foot-7 forward made her debut at 15 years and 7 days old in a season-opening 2-0 victory over Arizona Heatwave, coming on in the 82nd minute and assisting on the second goal of the match. Leroux went on to play in three matches, recording two assists during that time.

In 2008, Leroux played for the Americans at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, winning the tournament while earning the Golden Shoe as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals and the Golden Ball as the tournament’s top player. Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Saturday, April 9, 2011

RICHMOND, Va. – It was a tale of two halves at Richmond City Stadium Saturday night as an uneventful opening period between the Richmond Kickers and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds gave way to an enthralling second half. Goals from Gerson Dos Santos and Matthew Delicâte were enough to secure a 2-1 victory and help Richmond maintain its undefeated start to the season.

Richmond dominated the opening proceedings, creating numerous chances in front of the Pittsburgh goal. Edson Elcock nearly broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when he headed into the side netting from Luke Vercollone’s cross, but there were few other opportunities of note before the break.

Richmond was in the ascendancy again from the second half kickoff, with Ryan Heins forcing a fine save from 2010 USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year Hunter Gilstrap. Richmond continued to press for the opening goal, but Pittsburgh were up to the task until Gerson Dos Santos buried his shot from the top of the penalty area to give the Kickers a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute.

The Riverhounds countered quickly, and in the 72nd minute Pittsburgh striker Chad Severs beat Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale to a ball in the box and laid the ball off to Ben Horner on the penalty spot. Horner capitalized on the opportunity to tie the score.

The Kickers believed they had a penalty kick in the 78th minute when Elcock raced onto a ball and was taken down in the penalty area, but the referee waved play on. Possession transferred back and forth numerous times in the closing stages, but Richmond was able to make the most of a late free kick. Yomby William headed a high ball into the path of Delicâte, who volleyed his shot off the post and into the far corner of the net for the game-winning goal.

“It was a battle and could have gone either way,” Pittsburgh coach Justin Evans said. “Unfortunately, we came out behind.”

Richmond coach Leigh Cowlishaw said he was happy with the result. “Pittsburgh made it very difficult with their defensive shape and work rate,” Cowlishaw said, “but I thought it was a fully deserved win. The only annoyance is that we got the goal and then conceded within two minutes, which shouldn’t happen if we’re going to be a championship winning team.”

Richmond will put their 2-0 record on the line next at 7p.m. Friday against with the Rochester Rhinos at City Stadium. For more information, visit www.richmondkickers.com.

Charleston Battery News Release -- www.charlestonbattery.com

Saturday, April 9, 2011

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery defeated the Charlotte Eagles 1-0 Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in their first game of the USL PRO season. Charlotte defender Mark Bloom deflected the ball into his own net in the 58th minute to provide Charleston the game-winner after Jamaican forward Dane Kelly’s incisive cross created confusion in the Eagles’ penalty area.

“It wasn’t the best performance, but you look up and it’s 1-0 and we got the three points. You could tell we had some nerves out there,” said Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser. “Overall though I am very pleased with the team’s performance and of course the result.”

The Battery’s first chance of the evening came in the fifth minute when forward Levi Coleman beat the Eagle’s defense to play the ball through to fellow forward Kelly, but the pass proved just a touch too far for a quality strike.

Minutes later, Battery defender Mike Zaher made a one-two pass to Stephen Armstrong for the cross from the right hand side of the box. Armstrong’s cross was met by Kelly who was well placed, but his shot was just wide of the net.

Charlotte’s first major chance of the night came in the 40th minute. Eagles forward Sallieu Bundu lifted a shot on target from just inside the box, but his attempt was intercepted on the goal line by the diving efforts of Battery defender John Wilson.

“We had a lot of chances and it wasn’t our intention to get behind 1-0, we’ve got some stuff to work on,” said Charlotte head coach Mark Steffens.

The goal came after Battery midfielder Nicki Paterson played a long ball down the sideline for Dane Kelly who beat his defender with a burst of pace. As he approached the box Kelly drove the ball in and the ball squirmed into the goal off Eagle’s defender Mark Bloom.

Next up for the Battery is a visit to new USL PRO franchise the Dayton Dutch Lions next Saturday night. The game will be streamed live on USLLive.com with kick off set for 7:30 p.m.

Puerto Rico United News Release – www.prunited.net

Sunday, April 10, 2011

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico United’s Hector ‘Pito’ Ramos scored in the 90th minute to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Sevilla FC Puerto Rico at the Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium on Sunday evening. Ramos headed home from Mauricio Turizo’s cross to answer Sevilla’s goal by Alain Gustave in the 66th minute.

Making its USL PRO debut, Puerto Rico United wanted to try and start strongly, but as the first half progressed Sevilla was able to take more control of the game. But while both sides were trying to attack, United managing to break on the counter, neither side was able to create a dangerous chance before the break.

Sevilla also opened the second half strongly and forced PRU goalkeeper Jose Miranda into making some good saves, but Sevilla’s pressure paid off in the 66th minute when Gustave was able to head home. Sevilla had chances to extend their lead, but were unable to take advantage.

They were made to pay for that in the final minute as Turizo’s free kick from the right floated into the penalty area and Ramos rose to head home into the left corner of the net, earning his side a point and sending Sevilla to its second draw in as many games after a 2-2 tie against River Plate Puerto Rico in its opening game.

The draw was a morale boost for Puerto Rico United, which lost twice to Sevilla in the SuperCopa DirecTV last season. PRU will next face River Plate Puerto Rico next Sunday, while Sevilla will try to find its first win of the season when it hosts the Los Angeles Blues on Friday night.

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Saturday, April 9, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A crowd of 7,933 descended upon the Citrus Bowl to watch Orlando City win its inaugural home opener in USL PRO on Saturday. The Lions did not disappoint as they controlled the latter part of the first half and all of the second to win the game 3-0 against FC New York. It is the Lions first win of the season.

During the first 40 minutes, both teams were playing tough defense as the offenses struggled to find good opportunities. Multiple shots by the New York forwards along with Orlando’s Jamie Watson sailed high and wide. Towards the end of the first half, though, Orlando took control.

In the 43rd minute, Max Griffin of Orlando scooted past the New York defense after it temporarily broke down to score from the left side of the goal to score, the first regular season goal for City.

Right after the start of the second half, Orlando took control. In the 54th minute, Yordany Alvarez scored off the rebound of Jamie Watson’s shot that was saved and collected by Lawrence Olum, who passed to Alvarez for the strike.

Griffin wasn’t done yet, as Lewis Neal crossed it to him in front of the goal in the 71st minute to notch his second of the night. Griffin almost had a hat trick when in the 74th minute a strong shot set up by Neal sailed slightly right. The rest of the match was controlled by Orlando, as they notched their first win in the 2011 regular season.

Head coach of Orlando City Adrian Heath was pleased with his team’s improvement from the first game to the second, along with the fan turnout.

“I thought as the game was going on we gained more confidence, especially after the first goal by Griffin,” said Heath. “We were a lot better than we were last week. I am really pleased with everyone connected with the club as well. The club has worked so hard to make our first home game a special night, which I told our players as a bit of inspiration. There was a great atmosphere tonight. They did their job, we needed to do ours. All in all, a good night.”

The Lions next travel to face the Charlotte Eagles in Charlotte next Saturday before returning home to face Puerto Rico United on Friday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Ottawa Fury News Release - www.ottawafury.com

Monday, April 11, 2011

OTTAWA, ON - The Ottawa Fury are pleased to announce that goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips and striker Christina Julien will be returning for the 2011 W-League season. Both local products that graduated from the Fury Youth Program were instrumental in helping the Fury earn their 7th consecutive division title in 2010. Returning under new head coach Dom Oliveri these two look to play a major factor in helping the Women’s team capture that elusive W-League Championship.

"We are extremely excited with the return of Jasmine and Christina," remarked W-League head coach Dom Oliveri. "Both are International caliber players who have graduated from our Fury youth program. They have had a tremendous impact with our team over the last couple of seasons and we look forward to that continuing in 2011.

Phillips has been the last line of defence for the Fury the past two season’s helping the Fury surrender the second fewest goals (5) in the entire W-League in 2010 that saw Phillips post a 7-1-3 record and 5 clean sheets in 12 starts putting her in the top five in goalkeeping categories across the league. While Phillips would seldom face many shots she always proved clutch when the call came. This season will mark Phillips’ fifth season in the W-League, her first two spent with the Boston Renegades, sporting a career record of 21-8-5 with 13 shutouts in 38 games. Phillips is also the proud owner of two NCAA records and countless records at the University of Maine where she amassed an all-time record of 34-19-12 with 35 clean sheets and a career GAA of 0.52 with the Black Bears.

Like Phillips, Christina ’Corky’ Julien is entering her fifth W-League season, her fourth with the Fury. In 2010 she was tied for second on the team with 4 goals on the season helping the Fury earn the league’s fifth-best offence. Corky’s four W-League seasons, that saw her spend 2009 with the Laval Comets, has seen her collect 19 goals and 2 assists in 42 games. Julien is also a graduate of James Madison University where she helped lead the Dukes to a sweet-16 run in the NCAA playoffs in 2008. Her successes at the NCAA and W-League ranks are a major part in her invitation to the Canadian Women’s National team back in 2009. She has appeared in 24 games, starting 12, for the Women’s senior side tallying 5 career goals, including a goal in her very first match on her very first shot. While Julien wil be representing Canada at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany, she will be joining the Fury upon the completion of the World Cup.

The Fury Women open the 2011 W-League campaign on the road May 28 and 29 at Rochester and Hamilton respectively before their home opener on June 3 where they are an impressive 17-1-2 lifetime at Algonquin College. In the teams modern era (2003) the are an impressive 8-0-0 in season openers.

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL PRO Team of the Week of the 2011 season today, honoring Richmond Kickers forward Matthew Delicâte as Player of the Week after he scored the game-winning goal in the Kickers’ 2-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, April 9.

Harrisburg City Islanders News Release -- www.cityislanders.com

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders are proud to announce the signings of forward Jose Angulo, forward Jordan Seabrook, midfielder Drew Yates, and forward Andrew Welker. The four new arrivals will round out the City Islanders' roster as the 2011 season of USL PRO gets underway.

Angulo turned pro right out of high school after an impressive career at national powerhouse St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, New Jersey. It was at St. Benedict's that Angulo first teamed up with current Islanders midfielder Nelson Becerra. During his high school career, he was a Parade All-American and was considered by many college coaches to be one of the top high school players in the country. After pursuing opportunities with MLS clubs and in Europe, Angulo made one appearance for the Newark Ironbound Express of the PDL in 2009. He played the following season with the PDL's Central Jersey Spartans (again, teaming up with Becerra) where he netted 10 goals on the season. Angulo's skill in the attack will provide the City Islanders with another goal-scoring threat.

Seabrook, the third former Crystal Palace Baltimore player to sign with Harrisburg this season (joining Andrew Marshall and Stephen Basso), comes to the Islanders after stints in PDL and USL-2. The pacy forward had an outstanding college career at the University of South Florida, registering a total of 31 goals and 25 assists. His exploits at USF brought him attention from MLS teams, and he was selected 51st overall in the 2009 MLS Superdraft by the Colorado Rapids. Seabrook's speed and scoring touch will help strengthen an impressive looking Harrisburg frontline.

"We're very excited to be adding these guys to our roster for 2011," head coach Bill Becher said. "Jordan brings experience and pace to our forward line, while Jose will add to our attack with his strength and power."

Yates, comes to the team after his first year of playing professional soccer. Yates spent last season with FC Tampa Bay of USSF Division 2-Pro League after being drafted 29th overall by the Chicago Fire in the 2010 MLS Superdraft, followed by a brief trial with D.C. United. In college, the strong, steady midfielder had an excellent career at the University of Maryland where he was teammates with another recent Islanders' acquisition, Jason Herrick. From 2006-2009, Yates was the picture of consistency for Maryland, appearing in every match for the Terrapins, while tallying 14 goals and 13 assists. His vision and ability to read the game will make him a solid addition to the Islanders' midfield.

"Drew is an attack-minded midfielder who had the ability to break down opposing defenses off the dribble," Becher said about the young Maryland native. "He will be a threat to score goals, as well as set them up."

Welker, the final addition to the City Islanders' squad before the opener, is entering his rookie season of professional soccer in 2011. A local product from Mechanicsburg, PA, Welker played his high school ball at Cumberland Valley, where he was named the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division Player of the Year his senior year. From there, he enjoyed a solid college career at Seton Hall University. Over his four years, Welker played in 64 games for the Pirates, starting in 59 of those games. He struck a total of 15 goals and assisted on six more during his career, earning All-District honors as both a junior and a senior. Predominantly a forward, Welker also played in the midfield and in defense during his four years with Seton Hall, making him an extremely versatile asset for the City Islanders in 2011.

"Andrew is yet another local standout who will be a great addition to our roster," Becher said. "As well as playing up front, he can play anywhere across the backline or in the midfield."

With these final add-ons to the Islanders cast, the roster appears to be complete and ready to rock in 2011. A combination of youth and experience will make the City Islanders a force to be reckoned with as USL PRO kicks off its new season.

Valentin Eager To Learn In MLS

Reading United had a record setting 2010 season, culminating in both personal and team accomplishments. Not only did the team finish in the PDL’s Final Four after a handful of tightly contested playoff games, but now nine United alumni have either been drafted into Major League Soccer or signed to professional contracts.

Every week the club will highlight one of these alumni with an exclusive Q&A. Last week, we highlighted Sporting Kansas City forward C.J. Sapong. This week, our Assistant GM, Ryan Lineaweaver, spoke with Chivas USA defender, and Lancaster, Pa. native, Zarek Valentin.

After playing in four games with the Reading Rage (now United) in 2009, Zarek won the 2010 NCAA Division I Soccer Championship with the Akron Zips, the school’s first major athletics championship. Zarek also has played on the United States U-20 team, including their most recent matches in the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Zarek was drafted No.4 overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by Chivas USA.

*************

Ryan Lineaweaver: At the time, the Reading Rage (now United) were on the upswing in the PDL. Besides their success in the league, why did you pick Reading back for the summer of 2009?

Zarek Valentin: It was the best possible summer option for me at that time. I knew a couple of my friends had been playing there, and Pete Bulat and Andrew Wenger were probably was the biggest individuals in recruiting me. Guys like (Head Coach Brendan) Burke and Art (Auchenbach, President/General Manager) were very welcoming.

RL: What did your time in Reading do to prepare you for the MLS game?

ZV: Reading United made it a very pro-like environment. They had practices that were balanced and I liked that a lot. Most of all, they knew when to be serious and when to be fun. That balance helped me out with everything on the field for when I got to Chivas USA.

RL: How does the speed and physicality of the MLS compare to the PDL level? The college level?

ZV: Obviously some players are very gifted with speed at every level and the PDL level was very close to the college level in both of those categories I think. The professional level is definitely more physical but not in a “silly” way at practice. The biggest transition I think is the speed of thinking involved. It’s a mental strain but a good one I think!

RL: How do you keep yourself mentally prepared for a schedule that starts with the preseason in February and ends (at the earliest) in October? While many players play year-round during their youth, they have breaks between seasons. This is eight months of day-in and day-out work, unlike anything that you’ve dealt with before.

ZV: To me, I’ve learned it’s all about how you prepare yourself on and off the field. I’m in the gym before every practice to get my muscles warmed up and ready to go. After games it’s necessary to take ice baths, get massages, or whatever else is necessary. Mentally, I think I’ll be fine because I love the game. Physically, I’ll need to put more effort as stressed by my fellow Akron teammates at Chivas (Ben Zemanski and Blair Gavin).

RL: What was the overall experience of the MLS Draft like? Did the Philadelphia Union supporters group, the “Sons of Ben”, recognize you as a former Reading player and Pennsylvania native?

ZV: The Draft was probably the coolest thing I’ve been a part of. I’ve never been more nervous for a certain event before but it was an excited nervousness. I remember walking in and being stunned by the amount of people and fans that were there. I was happy to get a warm reception from the “Sons of Ben” supporters who were there and recognized me as a Pennsylvania boy.

RL: What goals have you set for yourself for the 2011 season? Where do you envision Chivas USA finishing in the standings?

ZV: I see myself learning more in this first year than almost in all my other years playing soccer. Not to put down other coaches, but I’ve just seen such a learning curve from other rookies. Guys like Heath Pearce and Jimmy Conrad have been essential in my learning at right back (Heath) and center back (Jimmy). I’m not sure how our team will do, but I can assure you it will be better than last year!

RL: So I have to ask, what are they putting in the water at Akron? Five Zips were drafted in the top eight players in the MLS SuperDraft this year. How does a small school, that had never won a national championship before, accumulate that much talent?

ZV: It’s actually a combination of Lemon Juice and Whey Protein. (laughs) Just kidding. It’s just a great environment that Caleb Porter and his staff have created there that is only putting out quality players that I get to play with. I couldn’t be happier to go there for every reason and once a few recruits started coming, the rest started accumulating. It’s a combination of good players and great guys! We did finally get our first National Championship my last year and that was such an amazing experience.

RL: Were you disappointed when you couldn’t draft yourself in the MLS Salary Cap Challenge? You would’ve been dirt cheap as a rookie defender.

ZV: I actually looked into seeing what I would be and I guess thanks for letting me know I can’t be drafted! (laughs). Maybe one day I’ll be in those games….

RL: Be honest. I think hardcore Reading fans really want to know where you allegiance lies: Reading United or Michigan Bucks? (Zarek played in 4 games for Reading in 2009, and 5 games for Michigan in 2010).

ZV: Well I certainly have a lot of love for both clubs. They have done a lot of good for me, so it’s very hard for me to say honestly. I got to practice once this past year with Reading and I was astonished at how far the club had come in just one year!

The 2011 US Open Cup qualifying process for the Premier Development League begins April 30 when the Central Florida Kraze play host to Fort Lauderdale Schulz. The match marks the beginning of what is arguably the most intense opening to any league season, making it the most pressure-packed portion of the PDL schedule league-wide. The task of qualifying can be more daunting than the professional opponents awaiting them in the tournament proper.

In the upcoming edition of the tournament, the PDL will be represented by a record nine clubs after seven consecutive years with eight representatives. With nine berths available, the league will send one from each division based on four league contests that will double as qualification matches – a format long established by the parent United Soccer Leagues.

Here is the Southern Conference portion of the four-part series of breakdowns:

Super Y Grows With U12 Division

USL News Release - www.uslsoccer.com

Thursday, April 14, 2011

TAMPA, FLA. - The USL Super Y-League has a little bit of a different look for the 2011 season.  The league hasn’t become any less competitive or stopped developing some of North America’s best soccer talent, but it has added a U12 division for 2011.

"The addition of the U12 age group offers member clubs an outlet for their U12 teams who are increasingly competing on a regional basis through tournament play and in other programs," Senior Director of Youth League Development Brian D’Amico said.  "By offering a U12 age group in the SYL, we will give the younger players who already train at a competitive level, the opportunity to compete against other competitive clubs within our league."

Super Y-League has added U12 boys and girls, and each will have South Atlantic, Mid Atlantic, Southeast, and Midwest divisions in their inaugural season.  Super Y-League stalwarts such as the New Jersey Stallions, TSF Academy, FASA, and the Northern Virginia Royals/Majestics are just some of the clubs that have entered the division in its inagural season.  More than 55 U12 teams will compete throughout the regular season for the right to attend the Super Y-League North American Finals presented by Umbro.

Traditionally, the U12 age group is where young players begin to transition into full field 11v11 soccer and Super Y-League competition is aiming to be the perfect gateway to the next level in players’ development.

"In terms of the excitement level from the clubs, all the clubs are thrilled to expose their players to the elite competition within the Super Y-League and this age group serves as an excellent introduction to the 11v11 game," D’Amico added.

The U12 division will aim to continue its expansion during the coming seasons, but the focus of the league will remain on the development of the youth player.

"Integrating the U12s into the Super Y-League structure truly gives them a developmental model of progression from year to year," D’Amico said.  "Any elite player wants to compete at the highest level, and giving this opportunity to the U12s grants them that exposure."

The U12 divsion kicked off on April 4, when the TSF Academy girls took down the New Jersey Stallions.  The two sides will meet again this Saturday, as the Stallions look for some revenge in the Garden State rivalry.
