SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC has announced the signing of midfielder Gilberto Dos Santos Souza Jr., pending league approval. The club has also announced the signings of defender Harrison Delbridge and midfielder Carlos Martinez, pending USSF approval.
Gilberto Dos Santos Souza Jr. is commonly known as “Gilberto,” and comes to Republic FC from MLS club, the Philadelphia Union. Before joining the Union, Souza spent time with Brazilian clubs, Clube Altético Mineiro, América Mineiro, Clube de Regatas Brasil and Clube Atlético Sorocaba, where he appeared in 37 matches in three years. Souza is a native of Serrinha, Brazil and is best known for his strong defensive play.
“Gilberto increases our defense in the midfield,” says Republic FC Technical Director, Graham Smith. “We are thrilled to have him here in Sacramento. He will be a great addition to our club.”
Delbridge played last season with the Ventura County Fusion before joining to Republic FC. Delbridge was a four-year player at Appalachian State University where he appeared in 56 matches and scored eight goals as a defender.
“Harrison Delbridge has a very imposing physical presence; he is a commanding figure,” said Smith. “He can be dangerous in set pieces in the opponent’s penalty area, particularly from corners and free kicks.”
Martinez comes to Republic FC after spending the last two years with FC Energie Cottbus, a second tier German club. Martinez spent the first part of his career with FC Rot-Weiβ Erfurt. Martinez has also spent time on both the U-17 and U-20 U.S. Men’s National Team.
“Carlos Martinez is a very interesting player, playing for both the U.S. National Team and in Europe,” said Smith. “He is a very keen young man with good technical ability.”
Republic FC’s first USL PRO regular season match will be on Saturday, March 29 against the LA Galaxy II at Stub Hub Center in Los Angeles.
