NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The CFC Azul and Western Connecticut State University announced today the signing of a long-term agreement that will have the PDL team play all its home games at the university.
Robin Schuppert, General Manager of the Azul, announced today that with the opening of the 2014 season, the Azul will be moving to the Western Athletic Complex (The WAC) on the Westside campus of WCSU. The Azul play in the Northeast Division of the PDL.
"WCSU is an outstanding partner and shares our long-term vision for progress, innovation and player development," said Schuppert.
"We look forward to a new deeply integrated community collaboration to further showcase a high quality of soccer in western Connecticut," said visionary soccer enthusiast and local entrepreneur Peter D'Amico. "Our goal is to train competitive players for the PDL team as well as prepare players for college, university, professional and national team opportunities."
The relationship features a number of important community initiatives, outreach efforts through partnering on youth soccer and community projects. We want the PDL players to participate in the promotion of the sport of soccer in the surrounding communities.
James W. Schmotter, WCSU president, welcomed the agreement that brings the team to Western.
"We're delighted to be able to help AZUL PDL provide the community the opportunity to enjoy a high-quality athletic experience at our Westside Athletic Complex," Schmotter said.
The Azul will play their home games at the Westside Athletic Complex (WAC) on the Westside campus of WCSU for the 2014 season. The field will be re-surfaced with state-of-the art turf, due to start in May. The Azul will play their first several home games at Danbury High School.
The WAC is the ideal venue. It is easily accessible to I-84 and Route 684 and within a 30 minute drive to towns in New York and Connecticut with over 15,000 players involved in active soccer programs.
