Ottawa Fury News Release

Friday, June 28, 2013

LAVAL, QC - The Ottawa Fury and Laval Comets clashed Friday with the Comets looking to pad their Central Conference lead, while the Fury were looking to reclaim their spot atop the standings. After surrendering two early goals Alyscha Mottershead’s brace for the Fury claimed a point on the road for the defending W-League champs.

Ottawa (5-1-2) remain a single point behind Laval (5-1-3), but have a game in hand and play Quebec City on Saturday afternoon. A win would vault the Fury into the Central Conference lead heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

It was not the start to the game that the Fury had drawn up as the Comets took the lead in the fifth minute as Catherine Charron-Delage, who scored the game winner when these two teams last met on June 12, opened the scoring for the home side. A few minutes later Laval found themselves ahead by two with the Fury still flustered from the opening goal. In the 13th minute the offensive onslaught continued, but this time it was the Fury getting on the score sheet as Alyscha Mottershead netted her second of the season to put life back into the Fury. The duration of the first half was a seesaw affair and the two rivals would head to the dressing rooms with Laval leading 2-1.

Ottawa had the brighter start to the second half and while they applied their fair share of pressure too many shots were directly at Genevieve Richard who proved solid once again in the Laval goal. Ottawa had a few set pieces with time winding, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The Fury pushed forward desperately searching for the tying goal. With the final whistle mere moments away Alyscha Mottershead provided the late heroics netting the equalizer in injury time to pull the Fury level with her second goal of the game and third of the season.

The Comets and Fury will have one more chapter to their rivalry on July 10 when Ottawa hosts Laval which should play a major role in determining seeding for the playoffs and determine if the Fury can continue their run of division titles as they look to make it ten continuous years of dominance.
