CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery (2-1-0) take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-1-0) on Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6 p.m. with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m., $10 - $18, www.charlestonbattery.com / (843) 971-GOAL (4625). The Battery enters the game on the back of a 3-0 road win versus the Charlotte Eagles in game played on Tuesday, April 17.
Charleston split its opening series of games with the Richmond Kickers winning in Richmond and losing at Blackbaud Stadium. The Battery will be looking to pick up its first home points of the season on Friday night. Head coach Mike Anhaeuser was boosted this week by the news that goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra’s loan from Major League Soccer’s D.C. United has been extended into mid-May. Dykstra earned a shutout win in the victory against the Eagles.
Midfielder Ryan Richter was named USL PRO Player of the Week following his performance against the Eagles. Richter scored his first goal as a Battery player in the game and has now accumulated three points through three games.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds visited Antigua Barracuda to start the season and split a pair of games with the Barracudas. Last weekend Pittsburgh hosted the Dayton Dutch Lions and won 2-0 behind goals from Seth C'deBaca and Agustino Nunez.
Dane Kelly and Navion Boyd sign with Battery
The Charleston Battery have signed two Jamaican strikers for the 2012 USL PRO season. Forward Dane Kelly returns for a second year and will be joined by Jamaican national team forward Navion Boyd; both players join the Battery on loan from Jamaican Premier League side Tivoli Gardens.
Kelly and Boyd will join the squad immediately and should be available for selection for the Charleston Battery’s game against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
“Getting Dane and his Jamaican teammate Navion Boyd has been in the works for over a month and we are happy to get them to Charleston. We are expecting very good things on the offensive end of the field from both,” said Battery coach Mike Anhaeuser.
Kelly played 17 games for the Battery in 2011 scoring six goals and adding one assist. The 21-year-old, 5-foot-11, 150 pounds, is a native of St Catherine, Jamaica and led the U21 JPL league in scoring in 2010-2011 with 15 goals.
Boyd is a team-mate of Kelly’s at Tivoli Gardens FC in Jamaica. Boyd has played for Tivoli since 2005 scoring 26 goals in 75 games played. Boyd scored the goal that lifted Tivoli to the 2011 JPL Championship. The 25-year-old, 5-8, 155 pounds, is a current member of the Jamaican national team and has scored one goal in 17 appearances for the Reggae Boyz.
