Wilmington Hammerheads News Release -- www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Monday, February 28, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads are pleased to announce that former UNC-Wilmington soccer standouts Brock Duckworth and Devan Carroll are the most recent additions to the 2011 roster.

Out of Plano East High School in Plano, Texas, Duckworth was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the Seahawks. He finished both his junior and senior season nationally ranked in goals against average and save percentage.

In 2009, Brock helped the Seahawks to their first NCAA tournament appearance as he posted a 0.64 goals against average and was ranked second nationally with a .886 save average. Duckworth is UNCW’s all-time leader in goals against average with a 1.07 GAA.

Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving was pleased with the addition of Duckworth to his squad.

“Brock had a great collegiate career and now has a great opportunity to make his mark at the professional level," Irving said. "I am confident that he will make his mark as a Hammerhead."

A native of Jacksonville, N.C. and a White Oak High School graduate, forward Devan Carroll was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player of the Year in 2008 when UNCW won its first regular season conference title and hosted the conference championship. Carroll had 10 goals in three seasons, nine of those goals scored in 2008.

“Devan will be a very effective player for us with his quickness and ability to put the ball in the back of the net," Irving said. "He has great pace and knows where the goal is.”

The Hammerheads begin their season at home on April 16, 2011 against the Rochester Rhinos. Ticket prices for games are $10 of adults, $8 for seniors (65+), and $6 for children 12 & under. Special group ticket rates are available. Contact the Hammerhead office for more information.

Dayton Dutch Lions News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Monday, February 28, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio – The Dayton Dutch Lions FC are proud to announce the signing of Mettin Copier and Kolby LaCrone for the 2011 USL PRO season.

Copier, an Austrian/Dutch native, signed a three-year contract with the Lions. Recently having played for FC Oss, Telstar, and AZ Alkmaar, Technical Director Cor Van Hoeven was very pleased to have the defender join the club

"Mettin is a talented young defender, who has spent many years of youth development in the Dutch professional football clubs," Van Hoeven said. "He made his debut at AZ and on the national youth team (under 21) of Austria. Mettin is a great talent that fits into our football culture."

Ohio native LaCrone brings prior USL experience, having played for the Cleveland City Stars, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and the Louisville Lightning. Van Hoeven expects LaCrone will be a great asset to the team.

"Kolby made a very good impression on the coaching staff during the open try outs, an attacker with great running ability and feel for the combinations is always difficult to defend," said Van Hoeven.

Not only a great player, Kolby brings the Kolby’s Kickers Foundation and a philanthropic passion to the Greater Dayton community.

"I am bringing some previous USL experience to Dayton," LaCrone said. "I have been in and around the league for a couple of years and know what to expect for the league standard. I also bring my Kolby’s Kickers Foundation that I founded in 2009. KKF strives to positively impact developmentally disabled and disadvantaged children through the sport of soccer. I hope to integrate this into Dayton and surrounding areas."

USL News Release

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues unveiled its 2011 Super Y-League Boys Olympic Development Camp select teams on Monday, honoring the players in the 94-95 and 96-97 age groups that had standout weeks at the annual SYL ODP National Camps this past weekend at the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

The players were chosen from a pool of 187 total players in attendance at the camp by the coaches in attendance under the direction of USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor.

“We were very pleased with the level of play and competition we saw at the camp this year,” Mellor said. “We hope that the players took away a great deal from the on-field training and scrimmages and the off-field activities that will help them become better players in the future. The players were in awe of the facilities and opportunities this week offered them and the chance to hear from Kasey Keller and U17 National Team coach Erik Imler on what it takes to reach the next level.”

Only two members of the Select A teams were returning members of the 2010 Select teams, with Race Williams from Mountain FC and Rece Buckmaster from the Fort Wayne Fever earning selections for the second consecutive year. Williams was joined on the 94-95 Select A team by Mountain teammate Tristan Wallis-Meyer, while the PSG Spartans also had two players named to the team that faced the IMG Academy Select team on the final day of the camp in forward Vincenzo Marna and defender Timothy Dibisceglie.

Alliance Academy led the selections on the 96-97 Select teams with four players - forward Nebojsa Popovic, midfielder Bradley Dunwell, forward Morris Kamara and defender Samuel Akpik - chosen. The Ottawa Fury placed three players on the A team, with midfielder Thomas Bisset, forward Jacob Schroeter and goalkeeper Erhan Yilmaz all chosen.

The 94-95 Select B team finished the camp on a high note, defeating the U16 Indian national team, 1-0. The side, which included 2010 Select team players Landon Collier of Alliance Academy and Nicolas Pascual-Leone of the MPS Bulldogs, was one of two squads to earn victories against outside opposition at the conclusion of the weekend.

F.C. New York News Release -- www.fcnewyorksoccer.com

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – F.C. New York of USL PRO is proud to announce that former Chesterfield striker Ben Algar has signed a one-year contract pending USL and USSF approval. Algar, 21, came to New York for trials this summer and has been training with Matlock Town FC since then to maintain his fitness.

Algar signed the deal alongside F.C. New York President Doug Petersen at the Copthorne Hotel, Bramall Lane in Sheffield, England. Algar was surrounded by family and well-wishers, including Sheffield United Vice Chairman, David Green and Dave MacCarthy, who oversees SUFC academy. Also in attendance were Carl Shieber, Sheffield United head of football administration, as well as football greats Brian Deane and Tony Agana.

Algar was born in Chesterfield, England and started his career as a trainee at Sheffield United Academy. He turned professional after his 18th birthday and his debut came against Notts County. Algar was described by then manager Lee Richardson as a “tricky left winger with an eye for the goal.” Algar became available when Richardson’s contract was not renewed and new manager John Sheridan made changes to the squad.

“Ben came recommended to us and flew to New York for a few days in August and performed very well,” F.C. New York Technical Director Matt Weston said. “He is very quick and relentless at getting to the goal.”

“I am so excited to be coming to New York; friends tell me what great fans New York has….I just can’t wait,” said Algar, who will report to training camp next week.

Agana, who scored 42 goals in his five seasons at Sheffield United, offered Algar some advice as he embarks on the next chapter of his professional career.

“Stay focused, work hard and good things will happen,” the striker said.

Quebec City Amiral News Release - www.amiraldequebec.com

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

QUEBEC CITY – General Manager Maxime Barabé announced today that the Québec Amiral SC of the USL W-League will play host to Standard Femina de Liège from Belgium for two friendly games, April 13 and 16 at Stade Leclerc.

The Standard is a 13-time national champion since its foundation in 1971 and is currently in second place in its championship. It has no less than seven international players in its lineup and should be a great opponent to the Amiral.

“They certainly will be in better sync than we are at this time of the year,” new Amiral coach Samir Ghrib said. “But it will be a great preparation for us and a tremendous opportunity for our young players to show they belong.”

The event is part of the 100th birthday of the Québec Soccer Federation, and is one of the highlights of the celebrations taking place all year long. On the men’s side, a provincial U-23 selection will host the U-19 team of the FC Metz, a French pro team, also at Stade Leclerc on April 14 and 17.

“From what I see, they are fast, physical and move well in their 4-3-3 formation.” Ghrib said. “I expect an excellent challenge but I think we should hold our own.”

The Amiral will begin its third season in the W-League in June. These will be the first international games in the club’s history. This is considered an important year by everyone in the organization and expectations are high. The team will play in a brand new 2,000-seat stadium in downtown Québec City and hopes it translates in fan support. Recruiting and preparations are well underway to make this year a special one.

“This is a new step for the Amiral and for soccer in the Québec City area,” Barabé concluded. “This is a fantastic way to bring more public attention to the team and the high level of soccer we play.”

Wilmington Hammerheads News Release -- www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads have added four former Ventura County Fusion players to their 2011 team. Dylan Riley, Ivan Becerra, Manny Guzman, and Hakop “Jack” Avesyan have all signed with the Hammerheads, pending USL and USSF approval.
After recruiting four players from the Fusion squad, Hammerhead Head Coach David Irving is pleased with his relationship with the USL Premier Development League team.

“We have a good working relationship with the Fusion, and I believe it will continue to grow. There is a lot of great talent on the West Coast, and the Fusion is helping to bring that talent to Wilmington,” Irving said.

Originally from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Becerra brings both skill and experience to the Hammerheads. He has seen action in the MLS playing for the Columbus Crew in 2006 and 2007, and also with the Portland Timbers in 2010. Becerra was a part of the successful Ventura County Fusion PDL team in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and is currently a trainee with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Out of Thousand Oaks, California, Riley has been a member of the Ventura County Fusion since their inaugural season in 2007. In 2009, Dylan helped the Fusion to win the PDL National Championship, and in 2010 was named team captain.

Riley attended California State Northridge where he was a four year starter and made at least one start at every position, excluding goalie. He was named part of the SoccerAmerica national team of the week twice, and was a two-time Big West Player of the Week.

A graduate of California State University, Guzman was a two-year starter for the Ventura County Fusion in 2009 and 2010. With the Fusion, Guzman has competed against teams including the L.A. Galaxy, the Vancouver Whitecaps, Chivas U.S.A., England's Portsmouth F.C., the Mexico U23 National Team, Real Salt Lake, and the Columbus Crew.

In 2007, Guzman was named captain of the PDL’s Bakersfield Brigade and led the team in minutes played.

Avesyan, of Hollywood, California, was also a standout player on the Ventura County Fusion. Avesyan was a part of the 2009 National Championship team, and also scored goals against Portsmouth FC and the San Jose Earthquakes. At the age of 18, Avesyan became a part of the Armenian National Soccer Team and competed in the Armenian Olympics.

FASA Impact News Release - www.fasasoccer.org

Thursday, March 3, 2011

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Fredericksburg Impact continue to gear up for their inaugural season in the W-League with the acquisition of several more talented local players for head coach Jen Woodie's side.

The Impact have signed Richmond natives Julie Jennings, a sophomore at Christopher Newport University, and Carter Blair, who recently wrapped up her career at Richmond University, along with Longwood University junior and Stafford, Va. product Mackenzie King.

"I'm delighted to welcome Julie, Carter and Mackenzie to the team," said Woodie. "The season is just around the corner and we can't wait to get started."

Jennings, who played her club soccer with the Richmond Kickers, will bolster the Impact back line. Blair, a product of the Richmond Strikers youth system, has experience at central midfield or outside back and played for Woodie at UR, where the Impact boss is an assistant coach.

"I loved playing for Jen Woodie and after she took this job and offered me an opportunity to continue to play soccer after my college career, I couldn't say no," explained Blair, who was redshirted for the 2007 college season due to injury. "I have been battling injuries my entire college career, so I thought my soccer days were over. But I have seriously lucked out to get an opportunity to still play."

King is an attacking-minded midfielder with W-League experience from a stint with the Fredericksburg Gunners in 2008, where she played alongside another Impact signing, Kara Blosser.

In an interesting twist, another familiar face has officially been added to the Impact's W-League roster. The club has announced that Woodie, a Virginia Commonwealth alumna and former W-League standout with Richmond Kickers Destiny, will serve as a player/coach for 2011, giving the team an experienced option in defense.

The Impact will kick off their inaugural W-League campaign with a home match against local rivals the Northern Virginia Majestics at 3:00 pm on May 21. The game is the first half of a doubleheader with their FASA male counterparts, Fredericksburg Hotspur or the Premier Development League. Tickets are on sale now at www.fasasoccer.org.

North America's premier women's development league, the W-League features 27 teams from across the United States and Canada and utilizes a 'pro-am' structure which allows college players to compete at a high level while maintaining their NCAA eligibility.

About the Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association
Since its inception over 30 years ago, FASA has expanded to become one of the largest and most successful youth soccer organizations in the region. The club has over 1,200 players on Travel, Classic and Super Y teams, and hundreds more attending FASA camps, academies, and professional goalkeeper training. Charleston Battery News Release - www.charlestonbattery.com

Thursday, March 03, 2011

CHARLESTON, S.C. -
Reversing his retirement decision after winning the USL championship with the Charleston Battery in 2010, veteran defender and Seneca, S.C. native John Wilson has decided to return to the playing field with the Charleston Battery for the 2011 USL PRO season. Wilson announced his decision on Wednesday evening at the Battery’s annual season ticket holder preseason party at the Three Lions Club, Blackbaud Stadium.

"John Wilson has been a tremendous defender for the Charleston Battery for many years and it is wonderful to have him back for one more season," Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser said. "John brings a wealth of experience both on and off the field. We will expect him to utilize this experience to stabilize the defense and the younger players on the team."

Wilson, 33, played 15 games for the Battery in 2010, anchoring the defense as Charleston won its third USL championship. His career Charleston Battery totals include 181 games (third all-time), 16,221 minutes, 1 goal and 9 assists.

Wilson began his pro career with the Battery in 1999. After an outstanding rookie season he joined Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards in 2000. Wilson returned to the Battery in 2001 and spent three seasons with the club including 2003, when he was a member of the Championship-winning team.

In 2004 Wilson moved to the Rochester Rhinos, and a year later was signed by Major League Soccer’s D.C. United. After three years with D.C. United Wilson rejoined the Battery before the start of the 2008 season.

Wilson, 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, had an outstanding college career at Clemson University and was named All-ACC in 1997 and 1998. He played in 57 matches for the Tigers, scoring18 goals and adding 35 assists in his career. Wilson helped Clemson to an ACC Championship, No. 1 national ranking and Final Eight NCAA finish in 1998.

"I realized after some time away from the game and also days spent running through downtown and playing in a few pick-up games, that playing was still in my system," Wilson said. "Many of my friends, family, and ex-teammates all said the same thing - ’If there is something you love to do, do it as long as you can.’ "

Lamar Neagle signs with MLS’s Seattle Sounders
2010 USL MVP Lamar Neagle has signed with Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders. Neagle scored 14 goals in 17 games for the Battery on his way to MVP honors last season. Neagle becomes the second 2010 Battery player to sign with MLS - forward Tom Heinemann joined the Columbus Crew in January.

"Lamar Naegle is a great example of a player that has come in and done tremendously well and is now getting the opportunity to play in the MLS," Anhaeuser said. "As a coach you hate to lose players to another team but for the players growth it is something that you love to see. I wish Lamar the best in Seattle as he deserves to make the move up as does every player that performs well."

A Tacoma, Wash. native, Neagle originally signed with Seattle for the 2009 season but did not feature in any league matches.

Carolina Challenge Cup tickets
Tickets for the 2011 Carolina Challenge Cup featuring Major League Soccer are on sale now with prices frozen at 2010 levels. The USL Champion Charleston Battery will be joined by Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, D.C. United & Toronto FC for the week-long tournament, March 5-12, 2011. You have to admire the professional approach taken by the organizers of Winnipeg’s latest soccer venture.

The Winnipeg WSA club already has a confirmed place to play, corporate and political support, a financial plan and it introduced a qualified coaching staff on Monday, even if the part-owner did name himself head coach.

Eduardo Badescu, a former professional international head coach and player, will head up Winnipeg’s entry into the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League.

“Yes, I think it’s a little too much (to be both owner and head coach) but it’s necessary at the beginning to save money,” said Badescu, who also introduced two assistant coaches, major corporate sponsors and unveiled the team’s schedule.

Badescu, who operates the local World Soccer Academy, hired former Winnipeg Fury players William Rosales and Constantin Ignat as his assistants. Both are also former international pro soccer players and both work with him at the academy.

AKRON, Ohio -- Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic welcomed the Akron Summit Assault, the newest team in the Premier Development League of The United Soccer Leagues, at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron this morning.

Jeff McRaney, senior director of the Premier Development League made the official announcement in a press conference held on March 7, 2011.

Denzil Antonio, head coach of the Akron Summit Assault, officially signed Cleveland State University Goalkeeper Brad Stuver as the first player for the team and presented him with his jersey.

Born in Mayfield, Ohio, Stuver is a graduate of Twinsburg High School. He was named to the 2008 Plain Dealer All-Star Team and earned All-Ohio honors as goalkeeper after his senior season at Twinsburg High School playing for Mike Lally.

Stuver finished his prep career with 24 shutouts in goal and 12 goals and three assists as a midfielder. Brad is currently a sophomore goalkeeper for Cleveland State University.

The Akron Summit Assault will play at the 3,000 seat John Cistone Field/Green Street Stadium on the campus of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in downtown Akron with a 16-game regular season beginning May 14, 2011 against the Chicago Fire Premier.

The Premier Development League (PDL), which contains 64 franchises throughout the United States and Canada, has provided a launching point for college-aged players to develop into professional prospects.

This year, 37 of the 54 players selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft had previously played in the Premier Development League. The Akron Summit Assault is part of the Great Lakes Division, one of the most competitive divisions in the league. The club will play teams from Chicago, Louisville, Cincinnati, Detroit and South Bend as well as Toronto, London and Hamilton of Canada.

Many of the teams in the Great Lakes Division have produced great players that are now playing professionally in Major League Soccer or abroad, including Darlington Nagbe, Perry Kitchen, Zarek Valentin, Kofi Sarkodie, Rich Balchan and Michael Nanchoff, all of whom were selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.

Premier Development League teams are comprised primarily of players who aspire to play professionally after college. Many of the players in the Premier Development League hail from their team’s community and have developed into outstanding players at top colleges. The Akron Summit Assault will be comprised of players mainly from universities and colleges in Ohio.

This is a unique opportunity for both adults and children to be associated with regional players they can follow. The Akron Summit Assault is a non-profit organization team.

Mayor Plusquellic emphasized the family-oriented nature of soccer being an important element in community life, saying, “We’re proud to be known as a city with affordable family-friendly entertainment. From the Akron Aeros, to the Racers, the pro golf tournament, the Soap Box Derby and now Assault soccer, we have even more low cost, wholesome activities for the coming summer.”

The players appeared together in Manhattan for the announcement at the Fitzpatrick Hotel prior to attending a viewing party for the UEFA Champions League match between Arsenal and Barcelona.

Vancouver Whitecaps Press Release - www.whitecapsfc.com

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that former Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) striker Tiffany Weimer has been confirmed as the club’s first player signing for the 2011 United Soccer Leagues W-League campaign. In addition to her on-field responsibilities, Weimer will also assume the role of Whitecaps FC Women’s Ambassador.

"Tiffany is a talented and dynamic player, who brings a wealth of experience to our team," said Whitecaps FC women’s team head coach Hubert Busby Jr. “She will be a great asset to the club on and off the field, as we continue to grow the women’s game."

Last season, Weimer made eight appearances for WPS club Boston Breakers before moving overseas to play for Allmänna Idrottsklubben (AIK) of Damallsvenskan - the top tier of women’s soccer in Sweden. In 2009, Weimer played for FC Gold Pride in WPS after being drafted 17th overall. In her debut appearance for the California club, Weimer assisted on the first goal in club history before making 15 appearances, recording one goal and a team-high three assists.

“It’s an exciting time for Whitecaps FC with the aspirations that the club has for both the women’s team and with the MLS team,” said Weimer. “It has been a while since I’ve been this anxious to start with a new team. I’m excited to be a part of the Whitecaps FC organization.”

Weimer first took her talents abroad in 2008. She began the year with Finnish club Åland United of the top-tier Naisten Liiga before moving to Brazil to play for Santos FC. The 5-foot-3 striker played for the SoccerPlus Connecticut Reds for parts of two Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) seasons, and in 2007, she was named the WPSL East Player of the Year award. In 2006, she suited up for Washington Freedom in the W-League.

Weimer was a prolific goalscorer during her NCAA Division I career at Penn State University. In her four years with the Nittany Lions, Weimer tallied 91 goals - the most in Big Ten Conference history. Weimer was a two-time runner-up for the MAC Hermann Trophy (awarded to the best college soccer player) and a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American after leading Penn State to two NCAA College Cup appearances.

Internationally, the native of North Haven, Connecticut, has earned six caps for the United States U-21 national team, including appearances with the squad that made the semifinals of the 2006 Nordic Cup. Weimer has continued to be a member of the US national team player pool and has participated in several training camps.

In addition to her role on the pitch, Weimer will succeed recently retired midfielder Kara Lang as Whitecaps FC Women’s Ambassador. She will play a lead role in increasing the awareness and growth of both the female game and the Whitecaps Women’s Soccer Series. Weimer will build relationships through visits with local clubs, players, and coaches. The veteran striker will also play a part in the boardroom as the honourary chairperson for the club’s Net Works group - a committee of local corporate and community leaders established to raise funds and community support for women’s sport in British Columbia.

This year, defending W-League Western Conference champions Whitecaps FC will play their regular season home schedule at seven different home venues throughout the province of British Columbia, as part of the Whitecaps Women’s Soccer Series - in partnership with the Girls Metro Soccer League (GMSL). Whitecaps FC will kick off their 2010 home schedule on Sunday, May 30, at 2 p.m. PT, when they battle Colorado Force FC at Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam, BC. Five days later, the ’Caps will host Colorado Rush at Chilliwack’s Exhibition Stadium at 7:30 p.m. PT. Additional Home venues include Surrey’s Newton Athletic Park Field on Friday, June 10; Whistler’s Myrtle Philip Field on Friday, June 24; Richmond’s Hugh Boyd Stadium on Canada Day (Friday, July 1); and Penticton’s Kings Park Field on Friday, July 8. The team concludes the regular season at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park Field on Friday, July 15. Whitecaps FC begin the 2011 season on the road against W-League expansion outfit Victoria Highlanders FC at Bear Mountain Stadium in Langford, BC, on Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. PT.

Charleston Battery News Release -- www.charlestonbattery.com

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery came from behind to beat Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC 2-1 on Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in the Carolina Challenge Cup. After conceding in the 14th minute the Battery rallied with a goal from Dane Kelly who also drew a penalty that allowed Charleston defender Mike Zaher to notch the game-winner.

Toronto opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Battery defender Nigel Marples handled the ball in the box. Midfielder Nathan Sturgis converted the ensuing penalty kick as the Reds jumped to a 1-0 lead.

Forward Dane Kelly, who recently joined the Battery on a season-long loan from JPL side Tivoli Gardens, caused the Toronto defense problems with his pace throughout the first half as the Battery fought back. Kelly was rewarded for his exertions in the 43rd minute as the ball was worked to him at the edge of the penalty area. Kelly fired a first-time shot that flew past Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei into the bottom left corner.

After the break Kelly continued to threaten and earned his side a penalty after he was pulled down in the box as he span past Toronto defender Mikael Yourassowsky.  Zaher saw his initial penalty attempt saved but maintained his composure and lifted the rebound over Frei and into the goal.

Toronto pushed forward looking for an equalizer but were unable to find a breakthrough against a resilient Battery defense that held on for the win.

D.C. United 1 – Chicago Fire 0

In the first game of the evening D.C. United defeated the Chicago Fire a score of one goal to none. Rookie forward Blake Brettschneider scored the only goal of the match heading home from close range after a Santino Quaranta free-kick in the 10th minute.

Chicago was forced to play with ten men for the majority of the match after Deigo Chaves was ejected in the 37th minute for a late challenge.

The Carolina Challenge Cup concludes on Saturday night as Toronto FC plays D.C. United at 5 PM followed by the tournament finale at 7:15 PM as the Battery plays the Chicago Fire ($15 - $25, (843) 971-4625 / charlestonbattery.com).

Richmond Kickers News Release - www.richmondkickers.com

Saturday, March 12, 2011

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers officially opened preseason with a 3-0 win against the 2010 ACC Champions University of Maryland in front of a sold-out crowd at the Kickers state-of-the-art training facility, UkropPark. A 0-0 first half gave way to a flurry of goals when star forward Matthew Delicâte opened scoring in the 64th minute. Midfielder David Bulow managed his homecoming in style, adding a pair of tallies in the 67th and 71st minutes.

With the wind at their backs, Maryland applied pressure, winning a lot of balls early in the midfield. ACC Freshman of the Year, Patrick Mullins, looked especially dangerous and nearly put the Terps on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute when his header from point-blank range was stifled by the woodwork. Shortly after, Jordan Cyrus capitalized on a poorly organized Kickers back line, breaking through 1v1 with goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale, but the Kickers veteran netminder swiftly preserved his clean sheet with a reaction kick save.

The Kickers opened the second half with renewed intensity and put up three consecutive goals as a result. First, in the 64th minute, a nice combination on the right wing broke trialist Ryan Heins through the Terps defense. The former Rochester Rhinos midfielder slotted a short back pass to an awaiting Delicâte for an easy tap-in from seven yards.

Three minutes later, trialist Michael Callahan delivered a perfectly placed corner, finding Bulow positioned inches from the target. Able to beat the ‘keeper in the air, Bulow redirected the ball on goal. Then, Bulow and Callahan teamed up for the third tally of the night in the 71st minute when Callahan drew a foul inside the penalty box. Bulow stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball into the left corner.

The Kickers continue preseason training with an intense lineup of closed door scrimmages including matches against Old Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University and the Carolina RailHawks. The 2011 USL PRO regular season commences in only three weeks, when the Kickers play host to Orlando City on Saturday, April 2 at City Stadium.

Claudio Alvarez-Dunn River Plate General Manager has announced that Walter Fabian Zermatten has been retained as team coach after the club’s success in 2010’s SuperCopa DirecTV. The team will also have Francisco Llanos as physical trainer.

Alvarez-Dunn added that River PR retained 80 percent of the original roster that won the PRSL Super Cup 2010 event. That includes forward Yaikel Perez, the player that scored twice in the SuperCopa final against the Puerto Rico Islanders, and the club has also re-signed Peter Villegas, Eloy Matos, Facundo Quiroga, Alejandro Russo, Guillermo Garcia Barros, Paulo Centurion, Matias Arce, Raul Ruiz, Matias Maroni, Martin Morello, Jose Miguel Montoya, Julio Maya, and Nelson Torres.
