USL News Release

Sunday, May 29, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced tonight that a lottery to determine the U.S. Open Cup participant from the USL Premier Development League’s Northwest Division will take place on Tuesday morning at the USL Offices in Tampa, Fla.

The lottery became necessary when the Kitsap Pumas and Portland Timbers U-23s finished tied at the top of the Northwest Division qualifying standings with identical 3-0-1 records, including a 0-0 draw between the two teams on May 21, identical goal differentials and identical goals scored. Kitsap defeated the North South SeaWolves 1-0 on Sunday afternoon while the Timbers U-23s defeated the Tacoma Tide 2-0 on Sunday evening in their final qualifying games.

The lottery will be held on Tuesday to allow for the final day of PDL Open Cup qualifying to conclude, which could see a similar scenario take place in the Southeast Division with the Mississippi Brilla FC and Central Florida Kraze. The Brilla would secure the division’s berth with a two-goal victory against the Nashville Metros on Monday evening at 6 p.m. to jump past the Kraze on goal differential, or at least a 2-1 victory to advance on goals scored. Should the Brilla win 1-0, a similar lottery would be required.

The draw will be officiated by USL Premier Development League Director Jeff McRaney and USL President and U.S. Open Cup committee member Tim Holt, and be recorded for official records.

Santa Clarita Blue Heat News Release - www.scblueheat.com

Sunday, May 29, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – There was quite a bit of pent up energy for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat on Sunday when they traveled to face the LA Strikers. Having battled to a scoreless tie on Thursday against the Pali Blues, the Blue Heat were hungry to score, and score they did. By the time the final whistle had blown, the Blue Heat had achieved a new franchise goal-scoring record in a 7-2 W-League victory.

Taking to the field with confidence, organization and playing a possession game, Hannah Beard posted an early goal, her second in three games. Edite Fernandes then used her experience and technique to put away her first goal for the Blue Heat. The first half ended, but not after a driving third score by forward Ann Marie Tangorra made it 3-0 for the home squad.

Early into the second half substitute midfielder Stacy Rodwell scored consecutive and perfectly placed goals off outside free kicks to the upper corners, just past the reach of LA Strikers goalkeeper Erin Frushon. Late defensive-line miscues by the Blue Heat led to a pair of goals by Strikers forward Eva Dixon, but Markey Boyce and Liz Franco scored the final two goals for Santa Clarita before the final whistle was blown.

Santa Clarita goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo also had an outstanding game, stopping numerous shots and rebounds by the Strikers throughout the match.

Coach Fabian Sandoval and his staff were very pleased with tthe win and the team’s overall performance, noting that it is important to continue training hard for each upcoming opponent, given the depth of talent within the Western Conference.

The Blue Heat return home on Friday, June 3 at Valencia High School, facing the Seattle Sounders at 7 p.m.

To purchase tickets for upcoming home games, season passes, or for additional information, visit the Blue Heat website at www.SCBlueHeat.com.

F.C. New York News Release -- www.fcnewyorksoccer.com

Monday, May 30, 2011

QUEENS, N.Y. – F.C. New York defeated the Rochester Rhinos 2-1 on Monday afternoon at Belson Stadium through goals from Qwame Holder and Jhonny Arteaga. Holder opened the scoring for New York and Arteaga notched the second goal in first-half stoppage time. The Rhinos’ Frank Alesci pulled one back in the second half, but New York was able to hold on for three points in its first home victory of the season.

New York started the game strongly, creating several chances using the aerial presence of forward Graciano Brito. Despite multiple opportunities for both sides, it took a New York corner kick in the 29th minute to break the deadlock. Tadeu Terra whipped in a corner from the right side which found Holder, whose bullet header from six yards out shot past Rochester goalkeeper Neal Kitson into the left side of the net.

The score looked set to remain at 1-0 until first-half stoppage time when a New York cross was handled in the box, leading to a penalty kick for the home side. Arteaga stepped up to convert the chance, chipping the goalkeeper to make the score 2-0.

New York looked to maintain the momentum in the second half but was pegged back by a goal from Alesci, who capitalized on a poor clearance to slot the ball past New York goalkeeper Tim Melia from 12 yards out.

But New York wouldn’t concede again, giving interim coach Paul Shaw his first win at the helm of the team. It was also New York’s first win at Belson Stadium, giving the team a 2-4-3 record, good for fourth place in the National Division with nine points. Rochester remains in second place with 11 points with a 3-4-2 record.

F.C. New York’s next home game is Friday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University. For tickets and information please call 866-827-0154 or email tickets@fcnewyorksoccer.com.

Mississippi Brilla FC News Release -- www.brillasoccer.org

Monday, May 30, 2011

JACKSON, Miss. -- In a match that had implications for both the Southeast Division of the Premier Development League and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Qualification, the Nashville Metros visited Harper Davis Field on Monday night. But needing a victory to give itself a chance at the U.S. Open Cup draw on Tuesday, the Brilla saw the Metros score in the 90th minute to force a 2-2 draw and leave the Brilla with a 3-0-1 record in qualifying, allowing the Central Florida Kraze to earn the Southeast Division’s berth to the tournament with a 4-0-0 record.

The Brilla and the Metros squared off last Thursday night in Nashville with Brilla taking a 5-0 win that was aided by an early red card. Nashville made sure to exact a measure of revenge and keep Brilla from qualifying for the Open Cup. Any Brilla victory other than a 1-0 win would have been enough to earn them the Open Cup bid.

Neither team was able to create many chances in the first half, and the game remained scoreless at the break. Mississippi had the best opportunity with Joey De Mare’s chip glancing off the post in the ninth minute. After the interval, Nashville struck first when Jonathan Jackson’s long-range blast deflected off a Brilla defender, bounced off the inside of the Brilla post and rolled into the far-side netting.

But the Brilla equalized in the very next minute when substitute David Palmer found Brilla captain Mike Azira at the back post. Azira controlled and then finished in the Nashville net. Second-year Brilla defender Thomas Shannon then notched his first goal for the club in the 79th minute when Joey DeMare’s free kick bounced through the Nashville box to Shannon’s head at the back post, putting Mississippi in position to earn the Open Cup berth.

At that point the Brilla looked in control and should have put the game away with a few late chances, but Nashville never gave up and Jean Tshimpaka rewarded their persistence when knocked in a near post cross from Terry Keagan in the 90th minute. The goal was enough to secure a draw for Nashville and knock Brilla out of the Open Cup.

“I have to give credit to the Metros," Brilla coach David Dixon said. "They could have easily come into this game defeated after the big loss we handed them Thursday night. They fought hard and earned this draw. I obviously felt we should have done better, but I really can’t say they didn’t deserve it.”

Mississippi will have a chance to get back to their winning ways as they host the Central Florida Kraze this Saturday at Harper Davis Field at Millsaps College. The match between the two undefeated teams will kickoff at 7 p.m.

Harrisburg City Islanders News Release -- www.cityislanders.com

Monday, May 30, 2011

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders will be hosting their in-state rival, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, in the second edition of the Keystone Derby on Tuesday night at the Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. The City Islanders will be looking to bounce back from their 2-1 away loss to the Charleston Battery this past Friday. This will be the second match of the season between the two clubs.

Harrisburg City Islanders (1-3-2)

The City Islanders are currently in fifth place of the National Division. They’re twelve points behind first place (Los Angeles Blues) and six points behind second place (Rochester Rhinos). The City Islanders are still looking for an offensive answer, scoring five goals in six games this season. They have yet to score two or more goals in one game this season. Jose Angulo has been the City Islanders’ primary target so far this season, scoring three goals and has the third highest shots taken in USL PRO with 21. This will be the Islanders’ fourth home game of the season, recording a 1-1-1 home record, scoring three goals and allowing four goals.

This past Saturday, the City Islanders traveled to Charleston, S.C. and visited the Charleston Battery, losing 2-1. The City Islanders broke the ice in the sixth minute as Angulo headed the ball into the goal off of a David Schofield delivery. The goal earned Angulo his third goal of the season, tying him for seventh place for goals scored in USL PRO. In the 60th minute, the Battery were awarded with a penalty kick and midfielder Stephen Armstrong stepped up to score. The Battery would score their second and game-winning goal in the 86th minute as former City Islander Nicki Patterson finished a ball laid off by Seedy Bah. The loss pushed the Harrisburg City Islanders to fifth place of the National Division.

Harrisburg Players to Watch

David Schofield

Schofield is the last member of the Harrisburg City Islanders’ inaugural 2004 roster. To this day, he is the club’s all-time leader in assists (25) and fifth in points (39). In addition, the Long Island alum and former Blackburn Rover has contributed seven goals as a City Islander. The English footballer assisted on the City Islanders’ lone goal last Saturday to Jose Angulo. Watch for Schofield to extend his point streak.

Anthony Calvano

Calvano is one of two City Islanders to play every single minute of the season (540), the other is goalkeeper Chase Harrison. This is his fifth season playing for the City Islanders, overall registering three goals and two assists. The former Penn State Nittany Lion will be looking to help the City Islanders’ backline shutdown the Riverhounds offense on Saturday night.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-4-3)

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are currently in third place of the National Division. Since previously beating the City Islanders 1-0 at home back on April 23rd, the Riverhounds are 1-3-3. In that span of seven games, they’ve only scored three goals, having been shutout five times. Two of these goals came in a 2-0 win against F.C. New York and the other finish was converted in a 3-1 loss to the Wilmington Hammerheads. Overall, the Riverhounds have scored just five goals in nine games with their defense allowing just nine goals. Saturday’s match will be Pittsburgh’s fifth away game of the season, tallying a 0-3-1 away record, scoring just two goals and allowing six goals.

This past Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds hosted the Wilmington Hammerheads at Chartiers Valley Stadium, playing to a 0-0 draw. The best opportunity the Riverhounds had was in the first moments of play. Former City Islander Chad Severs shot a redirected header by Jeremy Deighton, but Severs’ blast went straight to Hammerheads goalkeeper Brock Duckworth. Neither the Riverhounds or the Hammerheads would get a good chance at goal for the rest of the match, settling for a 0-0 tie.

Riverhounds Players To Watch

Chad Severs

The former Harrisburg City Islander leads the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in assists with two. Known as an offensive scoring machine, Severs has yet to put one in the back of the net this season.

Jeremy Deighton

The Slippery Rock University alum leads the Riverhounds in goals with two. This is his second season being a pro after being the PSAC-West Player of the Year as a junior in 2008 and senior in 2009.

Tuesday’s kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. The game will also be available to watch online at usllive.com. For more information on the City Islanders, or order tickets, contact the team at 717-441-GOAL, or visit www.cityislanders.com.

USL News Release

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL PRO Team of the Week for Week 9 of the 2011 season today, honoring F.C. New York forward Graciano Brito as Player of the Week after he scored twice to rally his side twice in a 2-2 draw against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday night.

Brito answered each time after the Kickers had taken the lead, scoring his second goal of the night with 11 minutes remaining to earn his side a point. The former Quinnipiac standout now has four goals this season, half of his team’s total.

The Charleston Battery earned a pair of victories in the past week, rallying back in both, and midfielders Jon Gruenewald and Nicki Paterson both achieve recognition for their game-winning goals for the side. Gruenewald’s, which came last Tuesday against the Richmond Kickers, was also his first professional goal.

A pair of players from Orlando City also gain recognition as defender Demar Stewart and forward Kevin Molino were named to the team after their performances in last Wednesday’s 2-0 victory against Richmond. Molino in particular had a very strong performance, playing a part in both goals as he assisted on Lewis Neal’s opener before bagging the second himself.

USL News Release

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – The U.S. Open Cup qualifying spot for the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League’s Northwest Division will be decided on the field this Friday, June 3 when the Kitsap Pumas travel to face the Portland Timbers U23s in a regularly scheduled PDL game at JELD-WEN Field.

The winner-take-all match is set to kick off at 11 a.m. PT, with the outcome determining who advances to the first round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In the event of a tie, the teams will decide the qualifying spot via penalty kicks. At the request of USL and the two teams involved, U.S. Soccer has granted an extension on its qualification deadline to allow the Northwest Division qualifier to be determined on the field.

The unique tiebreaker scenario, made possible by the previously scheduled PDL match, is the result of the teams finishing with identical 3-0-1 records in Open Cup qualifying and finishing even in all tiebreakers. The teams played to a 0-0 draw on May 21, and finished with identical goal differentials and identical goals scored. Under USL’s qualification rules, the final tiebreaker was to be a lottery conducted at the USL offices.

“Respecting the lottery system in place, we felt strongly that with the teams playing again on Friday it provided the opportunity to determine the winner on the field rather than in an office,” USL President Tim Holt said. “We’re looking forward to a playoff-type atmosphere on Friday as these two rivals vie for a spot in U.S. Soccer’s most storied competition.”

The full list of 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup first-round matchups is expected to be released later today.

Harrisburg City Islanders News Release -- www.cityislanders.com

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Tuesday night in a thrilling 4-2 second 2011 installment of the Keystone Derby at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. Goals by City Islanders Jose Angulo, Morgan Langley, Jason Hotchkin and Sainey Touray led Harrisburg to their second win of the season, both of which have come at home.

Harrisburg struck first in the fourth minute when former Philadelphia Union midfielder J.T. Noone showcased his fancy footwork and laid off a pass to Angulo, who shot, hitting Pittsburgh Riverhound defender Louie Rolko’s hand. The referee immediately awarded a penalty, giving Rolko a straight red card, and Angulo burried the penalty shot past Riverhound goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap. Now a man down, the Riverhounds were very quiet in the first half, not having one shot.

After the break, the City Islanders wasted no time to get back on the scoreboard. Just three minutes in, Hotchkin served the ball toLangley from the left flank and the rookie cut inside from the right side, setting up the left-footed goal. The City Islanders wouldn’t stop there, as Hotchkind added a third in the 55th minute off a floated cross by Noone that he headed home.

The Riverhounds would turn things around in the 64th minute, though, as forward Jason Yeisley chased down a ball from the Pittsburgh backline and blasted the ball past goalkeeper Chase Harrison. Pittsburgh's momentum would build just three minutes later as Yeisley scored again, finishing a right-wing cross by former D.C. United midfielder Thabiso Khumalo.

The rest of the second half was nervewracking as the Riverhounds looked for the game-tying goal, but the City Islanders would regroup, keep their composure and find an insurance goal with a minute to go. After Brian Ombiji served a ball to Touray, the second-half substitute launched a rocket into the top left corner of the goal to put the City Islanders up 4-2.

The City Islanders’ next home game of the season is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Saturday at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island against the Charleston Battery. The first 1,000 fans will receive a FREE soccer beach ball. For more information on the City Islanders, or to order tickets, contact the team at 717-441-GOAL, or visit www.cityislanders.com.

Reading Ties Union On Late Goal

Reading United AC News Release -- www.readingunitedac.com

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

READING, Pa. – Just when everyone at Don Thomas Stadium chalked up another friendly win for the Philadelphia Union, Chris Harmon had other plans. His shot cut through the balmy late-May air past a helpless Zac MacMath into the top left corner of the goal, earning Reading United AC a 1-1 draw in a game that Philadelphia had led since late in the first half. The Union’s Gabriel Farfan had put Philadelphia on top in the 45th minute after “playing chicken” with United goalie Brian Holt and winning with a header into the open net.

The game could’ve been broken open on numerous occasions, if not for a few spectacular saves on both sides. Holt made the majority of his in the first half, when the Union’s six-goal effort against Toronto over the weekend was still fresh in both teams’ minds. The Creighton keeper started his night early, making saves in the 11th minute against Sebastien Le Toux from in close, then eight minutes later on a shot from just outside the box by Farfan.

Philadelphia took advantage of a counter-attack after MacMath showed why he was the Union’s first round draft pick this past spring, Following a close range attempt by Ownby, the Union moved back across the field, feeding Justin Mapp on the far sideline. A cross from Mapp forced a scramble by both Holt and Farfan, with Farfan heading the ball into the open net as Holt came up short.

MacMath again showed off his impressive skills in the 66th minute, as Will Bates caught a break behind the Union defense. Going one-on-one with MacMath, the former Maryland keeper withstood a thunderous shot to keep the match in Philadelphia’s favor.

After losing shutouts in the waning moments of games during their first two road games, the United finally were able to return the favor, as Harmon took a feed from Georgetown’s Steve Neumann, and buried it from long range.

This game not only showcased the blossoming relationship between Reading and Philadelphia, but many fans of both teams walked away with memories that will last a lifetime. Philadelphia’s Le Toux spent a great deal of the second half signing autographs for young fans at the fence. Goalkeeper Fayrd Mondragon, who did not dress for the Union, kicked a soccer ball with young fans on the field during halftime. These memoirs are the ones that truly matter, and the ones that accomplish the United’s ultimate goal: creating life-long soccer fans through access to local heroes of the game.

This night was filled with not only current heroes of the MLS, but the future ones as well in Reading. Despite the tie on the scoreboard, everyone came away winners this night as the current crop of United players got to show what they were capable of against professional opposition.

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City’s USL PRO-leading nine-game unbeaten streak will be put to the test over the next three days. On Thursday the Lions face the Charlotte Eagles at home before they travel to Wilmington, N.C. for the first time for a Saturday match against the Hammerheads.

The Lions are no stranger to multiple games in a short span of time. Last Wednesday, City closed out a stretch of three games in six days, two of which were on the road, with a 2-0 win over Richmond. Overall, Orlando was 2-0-1 on the swing. The test this time around will be playing the home leg of the two game set first.

First up for the Lions are the Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., a minor change from the previously announced 7 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on Bright House Sports Network. Jeff Radcliffe will provide the play-by-play with Eddie Rodriguez handling color commentary duties.

In their first meeting this season, defender Rob Valentino scored his first professional goal to give the Lions a 1-0 victory. Another win over Charlotte would not only give Orlando a 10-game winning streak, but also give the Lions a key win in the American Division. Orlando currently sits atop the division with 23 points, three points ahead of second-placed Richmond.

On Saturday Orlando visits the Wilmington Hammerheads for the first time. The surging Hammerheads are making waves in the American Division. They currently sit in fifth place, just outside of the playoffs, but have also played at least three fewer matches than every team ahead of them in the standings. The short rest road test will be one of the toughest challenges City faces all season.

Orlando midfielder Jamie Watson has a special connection to the Hammerheads. After a disappointing stint with Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas in MLS, Watson spent the 2009 USL-2 season with Wilmington. He had his best season as a pro with the Hammerheads, scoring 12 goals in just 16 matches. His MVP season in Wilmington revitalized his career and led to a move to the Austin Aztex and eventually Orlando City.

Kickoff on Saturday in Wilmington is set for 7:30 pm at Legion Field, with the game being available on USLLive.com.

USL News Release - www.uslsoccer.com

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced the W-League Team of the Week today, with Ann Marie Tangorra of the Santa Clarita Blue Heat named Player of the Week. Tangorra, a Cal State Los Angeles standout, continued her fine run of form to begin the 2011 season with a superb performance on Sunday against the LA Strikers.

Tangorra spurred the Blue Heat to a seven-goal haul, assisting on two and netting one herself. Tangorra is a big part of why the undefeated Blue Heat are making waves in the W-League Western Conference this season, after debuting in the league last season.

“Ann Marie has been tremendous,” Blue Heat Head Coach Fabian Sandoval said. “She gives us the opportunity to attack opposing teams effectively with her vision to set up teammates and ability to score goals. In our first three games she has been a consistent threat in front the goal.”

One of this season’s debut clubs, the Dayton Dutch Lions, continued their winning ways as they grabbed a big victory against the Charlotte Lady Eagles. Goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy and match-winner Mandi Back were instrumental in the side’s victory.

Toronto’s Christine Exeter and Laval’s Vanessa Legault-Cordisco also had match-winners for their clubs as the two sides earned three points in the Great Lakes Division.

Mississippi Brilla FC News Release -- www.brillasoccer.org

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi Brilla FC players are learning first hand this summer that some people are not as fortunate as others. At the same time, they are learning to share their blessings with those in need. The team recently served the community by volunteering their time and energy to help build a Habitat For Humanity house in Jackson, Miss.

"Habitat For Humanity is such a great organization that serves people all over the world," said Head Coach Dave Dixon. "It just made sense for us to involve our players in their ministry this summer."

The team spent four hours on Wednesday putting some of the finishing touches on two houses in Jackson that had been started by another group several weeks ago. The team built a front porch, installed cabinets in the kitchen, built an outdoor shed, and completed a number of other detailed tasks throughout the houses.

"Growing up in Haiti, I spent a lot of time in a local shop watching guys work with tools like this," said Brilla player Marc Joseph. "I was always too young to touch the equipment, so it was fun to be able to use the saw today."

Joseph and his teammates braved the 100 degree temperature as they enthusiastically served the community.

"It was really hot today," said President Rusty Bryant. "I was proud of our players, though. Their attitude and energy was contagious."

Pali Blues News Release - www.bluessoccerclub.com

Thursday, June 2, 2011

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Pali Blues played the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Stadium by the Sea on the campus of Palisades High School. Anisa Guajardo scored the goal for Pali, while Tina Romagnuolo provided the equalizer for the visitors.

“It was a bit discouraging because the decision was made over a penalty kick,” said head coach Jacob Tudela on the match. “With that being said, I thought our girls played well for 70 minutes, and then we kind of let loose and got into some bad habits. But I’m very proud of the girls. I thought they showed that they can compete with anybody and at times showed that they are the best team in probably the league.”

The Pali Blues had the first chance of the game in the 6th minute as Jessica Price took one of her signature throw-ins and placed the ball to the far post from the sideline. Defender Sasha Andrews headed the ball just high and over the crossbar.

The Whitecaps had a golden opportunity to go up in the 14th minute when a long ball was played to Sidney Leroux. Pali goalkeeper Adelaide Gay, filling in for Anna Picarelli who was with the Italian National Team, came out to try and win the ball, but Leroux beat her to it. Leroux had an open net, but her shot went just wide left of the goal.

In the 21st minute Whitecap Jen Stoltenberg took a shot that was headed for the top right corner, but Gay was able to push it out of harm’s way. Two minutes later, Blues’ Molly Kruger took a shot that went over the bar from 20 yards out.

In the 27th minute, the Blues took advantage of a ball that went out of bounds. Price took another impressive throw-in that found Elizabeth Eddy, who kicked a half-volley that brushed the crossbar.

The following opportunity for the Blues in the 30th minute was off a similar tactic. A throw-in by Price got to Ashley Bowyer, whose header went just over the bar.

The Whitecaps had their next chance in the 32nd minute when Tiffany Weimer ran for a long ball up the field. She unleashed a shot from the left side of the box that went over and wide of the goal. A minute later, Amber Brooks took a free kick that went just over the bar.
The first goal of the match finally came in the 44th minute. Guajardo received a through ball from Tiffany McCarty inside the penalty area, and shot it from 6 yards out to the far inside netting to send the Blues up 1-0 at halftime.

“Tiffany got the ball, she turned, and I just made a run wide. She read it perfectly, and slipped me through. I beat the defender and just shot it as far as I could, far post.” Guajardo described the goal.

After the break, the Blues came out hungry for more. Just seconds into the second half, captain Christie Shaner headed a corner kick, but it went right into the hands of Whitecaps goalkeeper, Kristen Funk.

In the 48th minute, Guajardo almost doubled the Blues’ lead with a shot from the corner of the 6 yard box that went just wide.
Alysha Bonnick took a shot in the 52nd minute that rolled along the mouth of the goal to give the Blues a scare.

A minute later, the Blues had another corner kick which Sasha Andrews headed, but again went into Funk’s hands. McCarty took a shot on frame a moment later, but Funk dove to save it.

The match seemed to quiet down towards the middle of the second half, with no major chances for either side, but in the 75th minute fans were aroused when Bowyer and a Whitecaps player were involved in a battle for the ball. Bowyer was whistled for a foul, and the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty kick.

Romagnuolo stepped up to take the penalty kick. Gay dove to the correct side and got a hand on the ball, but it slipped just past her and the Whitecaps had tied the game.

The Whitecaps nearly took the lead in the 79th minute when Bonnick released a shot from 25 yards out that went just over the bar. Five minutes later, Stoltenberg took a shot that hit the outside of the top right corner.

The game ended 1-1 with both the Blues and the Whitecaps remaining undefeated on the season.

Des Moines Menace News Release -- www.menacesoccer.com

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Payback came in decisive fashion tonight for the Des Moines Menace. One week after the Kansas City Brass rallied for victory, the Menace (4-1-0) left little doubt when these Premier Development League teams reunited at Overland Park Soccer Complex. Des Moines cruised to a 5-2 triumph after racing to a 4-0 lead in the first half of a game whose start was delayed 70 minutes by lightning.

Deshorn Brown’s fifth and sixth goals paved the way for the Menace. The speedy Jamaican started the scoring in the 15th minute and gave the Menace a four-goal lead in the 32nd. Diego Marroquin and Bryan Perez also found the back of the net as part of the early rampage.

“A great performance overall. Back on track,” said Menace head coach Laurie Calloway. ““We were just more effective finishing than we were last week. Just a better performance, making the most of the opportunities we created.”

The Brass (2-3-0) cut the lead in half before the break. Ricardo Yeverino, who is tied with Brown for the Heartland Division’s goals lead, scored in the 34th minute and assisted Ryan Miller in stoppage time. The Menace’s Uriah Polley added the final cushion in the 67th minute.

Entering last week’s match with the Brass, the Menace organization had hopes of sending two teams to this year’s Open Cup after the Iowa Menace had qualified through the USASA. The Brass spoiled this possibility a week ago in Liberty, Mo, when Des Moines could have clinched the Heartland Division’s Open Cup berth with a win.

Des Moines leads the all-time series with Kansas City, 21-11-1. The Menace hosts the Brass at Valley Stadium on June 18 and July 23.
Calloway’s crew is at home on Saturday night, hosting Des Moines International at 7:30 p.m. The team is preparing for a trip to Canada next week, with back-to-back doubleheaders in Winnipeg (June 7-8) and Thunder Bay (June 10-11).

MR. B MAN of the MATCH: Deshorn Brown, who already has two multiple-goal matches this season. Through his first five PDL matches, the NAIA all-American (who plays for the University of Mobile) has scored more goals than any Menace player has in either of the last two seasons.

UP NEXT: The Menace is back at Valley Stadium on Saturday, hosting Des Moines International on Youth Soccer Night, presented by Powerade and Vitamin Water. All youth-soccer players and coaches receive free admission when they wear their team jerseys or show their coaches’ passes.

Antigua Barracuda FC News Release -- www.antiguabarracudafc.com

Thursday, June 2, 2011

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Antigua Barracuda FC faces a crucial period in its short time as a professional unit when it takes on the visiting Rochester Rhinos in a doubleheader on Friday and Sunday at the Sticky Wicket Stadium. Both games kick off at 8 p.m. and will be available on USLLive.com.

With two defeats on the road to Rochester and Charlotte, the majority of the players were been engaged in an international friendly in the southern Caribbean island of Grenada where goals from Stefan Smith and Randolph Burton were enough to share the spoils with Gold Cup-bound Grenada.

“This was really good preparation for the boys," Head Coach Tom Curtis, who is also the Technical Director for the Antigua National Team said. "Even with key players missing, we will use this as a stepping stone to give a good performance in front of our fans but it is clear that the participation of Barracuda FC in USL PEO is helping the players to cope and perform better at International level.”

One of the objectives of Barracuda FC is to give the players representing the country and others pushing for national honors the opportunity to consistently play at this level.

“We are serious and deliberate about developing football in Antigua," Director of Football and Team Manager Fernando Abraham said. "Barracuda FC provides another avenue for our players to showcase their abilities at regular intervals. We have the talent and already we can see the players benefitting from this experience. We hope they continue to show this kind of progress.”

This Friday and Sunday tests against the Rhinos will provide yet another chance for the home team, beaten 2-0 in Rochester three weeks ago, to avenge that loss and get back to winning ways. Affected by injuries to key players on the recent road trip, the welcomed break in the schedule allowed the medical staff to work overtime on the many minor knocks affecting players which should see their return to full action.

Team captain George Dublin, who until his injury in the eighth game of the season played every minute of the season, is excited about his likely return to the team.

“I can’t wait to get going," Dublin said, "it’s been very frustrating for me as this is an unaccustomed position, watching from the side lines. We will have to play well against Rochester as they are a very well drilled team and will provide a tough challenge for us, but we will be up to it.”

Thursday, June 2, 2011

QUEENS, N.Y. – F.C. New York welcomes the Charleston Battery to Belson Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the second game of a seven-game home stand. New York will look to continue its climb up the standings having gained four points from its last two games.

The club comes off of its first home win of the season after it defeated the Rochester Rhinos 2-1 on Memorial Day in interim coach Paul Shaw’s debut. Qwame Holder scored via a header for New York in the 27th minute while Jhonny Arteaga notched a penalty kick for the team’s second in first-half stoppage time. The result lifted New York (2-4-3) to fourth place in the National Division with nine points.

Charleston (5-4-2) defeated Harrisburg 2-1 over the weekend and currently sits in fourth place in the American Division with 17 points. The defending champion was on the losing end of New York’s first victory on May 13 in Charleston, falling 1-0 thanks to a goal from Graciano Brito, and will be looking for revenge on Friday.

Brito, whose two goals in a 2-2 draw with Richmond on Saturday saw him recognized but the league as he was named USL Pro Player of the Week, leads New York up front. Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Thursday, June 2, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City extended its undefeated streak to 10 games, but it wasn't able to break down a resolute Charlotte Eagles defense as Thursday night's game in front of 4,241 fans at the Florida Citrus Bowl ended in a 0-0 draw.

The teams battled to gain the upper hand in the first half. Both played aggressively, sending long balls downfield that saw numerous changes in possession. But as the half wore on, Orlando began to settle and managed to produce a spell of pressure in the Charlotte half. While the Eagles' defense was up to the challenge for most of the half, goalkeeper Eric Reed needed to make an excellent save to deny Kevin Molino midway through the half.

Outside of that opportunity, neither side was able to create any clear-cut opportunities, and the half ended scoreless. The second half brought about almost equal frustration for Orlando. Charlotte continued to restrict their passing lanes, choosing to pack its defense tightly in the penalty area before springing out on the counter-attack, but even when those opportunities arose the Eagles had trouble capitalizing on their chances.

One counter-attack by the Eagles did see them gain a man-advantage, as Orlando's Jack Traynor was shown a red card for a professional foul. Traynor tried to stop a breakaway attempt from a Charlotte forward by grabbing him around the waist by the jersey, but the Eagles were unable to take advantage of the resulting free kick.

Charlotte came closest to taking the lead in the second half with just under 10 minutes to go as Jorge Herrera hit the left post from 25 yards, but otherwise Miguel Gallardo was excellent in net, claiming a number of crosses strongly and saving well from Walter Moore in stoppage time.

“Well I think Charlotte did a good job, you’ve got to give them a bit of credit too,” said Orlando's Jamie Watson, who returned to the side as a second-half substitute. “A lot of teams haven’t been able to do that and they did and I think that gave us some problems and at times we figured it out and at times we didn’t.”

While the tie was not what Orlando was hoping for, however, the Lions were able to extend their undefeated streak to 10 games, leaving them still first in the top of the table. Charlotte also extended its undefeated streak to four games, during which it has accumulated eight points.

“Being one pass away from giving somebody a really good scoring chance, I think that was one thing we lacked tonight," Watson said. “We got in some good positions to the final third and then the last ball was what killed us tonight.”
