Monday, February 14, 2011

RICHMOND, Va. –– The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that midfielder Stanley Nyazamba will return to Richmond for the 2011 season, pending USSF and Visa approval.

“It is our pleasure to welcome Stanley back to Richmond,” comments Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. “He made an immediate impact in his brief time with us in 2008 and I know he is eager to make a similar impact second time around. Our fans loved Stanley's style, passion and enthusiasm for the game and there is no doubt Kickers fans will be excited about his return.”

Named 2008 USL-2 Rookie of the Year, Nyazamba quickly became one of the Kickers top scorers, tallying eight goals and two assists overall for 18 points. Picking up Team of the Week honors on two occasions, he concluded his rookie campaign third on the team in scoring, and finished in the top 10 in goals and points in the league. Following the Kickers 2008 campaign, Nyazamba became the 22nd Kicker to advance to Major League Soccer, signing a developmental contract with the Columbus Crew. Most recently, the native of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe spent the 2010 season with the NASL side FC Tampa Bay where he posted over 1,000 minutes in 25 appearances, adding two assists.

Drafted in the second round of the 2008 Major Indoor Soccer League College Draft by the now-defunct Detroit Ignition, Nyazamba joined the Kickers professional squad upon graduating from Lee University of the NAIA Conference. The three-time All-Conference First Team honoree earned a place on the 2007 All-American First Team and was named a NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete his senior season. During his tenure at Lee, the Flames posted a record of 53-14-2 and made two NAIA National Tournament appearances. Adding 12 goals and 20 assists his senior year, the 6’1” midfielder finished with 28 goals and 44 points over three seasons, eclipsing the All-Time Assists Leader at Lee University with 60 assists overall.

POMONA, Calif. - A former Cal Poly Pomona soccer player is going pro.

Justin Valashinas, a former defender on the men's soccer team, will play with the Los Angeles Blues, a professional soccer team from the United Soccer Leagues Professional Division (USL Pro).

“I grew up playing almost every sport,” said the 5-foot-10 athlete from Manhattan Beach, Calif. Soccer, however, was the one sport that stuck and it has been a lifelong goal to play professionally.

It was just one week after the last game of the 2010 season when Valashinas jumped at the opportunity to play professionally. Trevor Persson, an assistant coach with the Broncos, was able to help Valashinas get an opportunity to tryout.

The L.A. Blues liked what they saw and kept asking Valashinas to return. Soon after, Valashinas was signed.

“I really didn't believe it. I was amazed that I was given a shot. That's all I could really ask for,” Valashinas said.

"We are pleased with signing Justin,” said Charlie Naimo, vice president and head coach of the Blues. “He is a young local player that has already shown signs of being a great professional."

Each of the 11 U.S.-based USL PRO teams will receive a spot in the storied tournament, as will nine qualifiers from the Premier Development League. The remainder of the field will be filled by eight teams from MLS and 12 additional amateur qualifiers.

“We look forward to having our USL PRO and PDL teams represent USL in the most storied tournament in U.S. soccer,” USL President and U.S. Open Cup Committee Co-Chair Tim Holt said. “We’re overdue for another USL run to the championship game similar to what the Charleston Battery, Richmond Kickers and Rochester Rhinos accomplished in the past 15 years.”

The 2011 edition of the U.S. Open Cup will get underway on June 14 with 16 first-round games. Five rounds of play precede the Oct. 4 final. The more than 155 teams that entered the competition beginning in the initial stages will be narrowed to 40 teams for the tournament proper by the May 30 qualifying deadline.

The tournament has crowned a champion for 97 consecutive years beginning in 1914. Every winning team’s name is engraved on the base of the Dewar Challenge Trophy, which dates to the first year of the tournament and currently resides at U.S. Soccer House in Chicago.

The two-time defending champion Seattle Sounders will enter the tournament in the third round and will be the first team since 1984 with a chance of winning three consecutive U.S. Open Cup titles. The New York Greek-Americans (1967-69) were the only other team to accomplish this feat.

Like recent editions, the U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament, with games tied after regulation extended by two 15-minute overtime halves. If a winner is not determined in overtime, advancement will be determined by kicks from the penalty spot.

The 2011 champion will earn $100,000 cash, while the runner-up will collect $50,000. The top USL PRO and amateur clubs will each receive a $10,000 prize. No Division II teams will participate in the 2011 U.S. Open Cup.

Portland Timbers U23s News Release -- www.portlantimbers.com

Thursday, February 17, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Timbers announced today the signing of midfielder Freddie Braun and goalkeeper Jake Gleeson. Both are products of the Timbers’ development team, the Portland Timbers U-23s. Timbers general manager/technical director Gavin Wilkinson made the announcement.

In 2010, Braun and Gleeson guided the Timbers U-23s to a record-setting season in United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League (PDL) and the league’s championship. The Timbers U-23s became the PDL’s first undefeated league champion at 20-0-0 in the league’s 15-year history.

Braun, 22, joined the Timbers U-23s last season after playing his collegiate career at the University of Louisville. In 2010, Braun logged five goals and eight assists in 16 regular-season matches; his assists total ranked third among league leaders. He also added three goals and an assist in the postseason to help the Timbers U-23s to the league title. Following the regular season, Braun was selected to the PDL All-League team.

At Louisville, Braun played in 81 games during his collegiate career, finishing with 11 goals and five assists. As a senior in 2009, the Rochester, Mich., native captained the Cardinals to a 13-3-4 record and a third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. Braun was the team’s second-leading scorer in 2009, recording eight goals and four assists in his senior campaign. Upon the completion of his senior season, he was one of 62 collegiate players invited to participate in the 2010 MLS Player Combine.

Gleeson, 20, posted a 14-0-0 record and eight shutouts during the regular season with the Timbers U-23s last season. He was named to the PDL’s All-Western Conference team and was crowned the league’s goals-against-average champion with a league-best 0.36 goals-against average (5 goals in 15 games). Prior to joining the Timbers U-23s, Gleeson spent two seasons (2008-09) with Team Wellington in the New Zealand Football Championship, where he started five games.

From Wellington, New Zealand, Gleeson has represented his country at the U-17 and U-20 levels. In 2007, he led the All-Whites to the U-17 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) championship and a berth into the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Korea. In 2008, he led the U-20s to a third-place finish in the OFC championship tournament. Following the U-17 World Cup in 2007, he had trials with English Premier League club’s Manchester United and Everton.

USL News Release

Thursday, February 17, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced today that the Hamilton FC Rage have joined the Premier Development League and will begin play in the 2011 season. The club will operate both PDL and W-League teams, with the existing Hamilton Avalanche of the W-League also being re-branded as the Hamilton FC Rage.

"I am extremely honored and privileged to be associated with the new ownership group,” Hamilton Lady Avalanche founding owner Valdi Greco said. “This group has worked extremely hard over the past few months in bringing the Avalanche to a different level by expanding on the men’s side. The combined new franchise, Hamilton FC, will be something to be proud of."

The PDL Rage will be coached by Brett Mosen, who brings more than 25 years of professional coaching experience to Hamilton FC. The team will play a 16-game schedule between the months of May-August at Brian Timmis Field. The club also unveiled its new website, which can be accessed at www.hamiltonfc.com.

“We’re pleased that the Hamilton FC ownership has recognized the benefits of providing a Premier Development League team to showcase the local men’s talent, just as they have the past five years with their W-League team,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. “They’ve given every youth soccer player in the district something to aspire to by offering an opportunity to play at the next level.”

The premier U23 men’s league in North America, the USL Premier Development League will feature 64 teams within four conferences across the United States and Canada in 2011. The PDL provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility.

“The level of play offered in the PDL is outstanding and I am looking forward to coaching at that level again,” Mosen said. “We intend to provide an exciting style of play and offer a professional environment to the talented players who will join Hamilton FC. In addition to player development, we will provide support to the H&DSA [Hamilton and District Soccer Association] and the local clubs through top level coaching development initiatives.”

Hamilton FC will develop several natural rivalries in Ontario as it challenges FC London, the Ottawa Fury, the Toronto Lynx and the Thunder Bay Chill (2010 PDL North American Finalist and 2008 Champions). Other Canadian PDL franchises include the Vancouver Whitecaps, Abbotsford Mariners and Victoria Highlanders from British Columbia and recently announced WSA Winnipeg in Manitoba.

The top supplier of talent for professional soccer in North America, the PDL saw another large group of its alumni make the move into professional soccer recently with 37 of the 54 players selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft having previously played in the PDL. A remarkable eight of the first 10 selections in the draft had PDL experience.

USL News Release

Friday, February 18, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – With a career that spans more than 40 years in U.S. Soccer, USL founder and current USL President Emeritus and Director of International Development Francisco Marcos was nominated on Thursday to be enshrined in the National Soccer Hall of Fame in the Builders category. Marcos is one of seven candidates nominated in the Builders category, with voting scheduled to conclude on March 11.

“I am greatly honored by this nomination,” Marcos said. “To be considered for this honor in the Builders category is a very humbling experience for me.”

Marcos was awarded the U.S. Soccer Federation’s highest honor in 2007 as the Werner Fricker Builder Award winner, joining an illustrious group that also includes current USSF President Sunil Gulati, former USSF President and Founder of Major League Soccer Alan Rothenberg and 2011 award recipient Kevin Payne, the CEO and President of D.C. United.

FRANCISCO MARCOS' CAREER IN SOCCER

Marcos’ career began in 1968 when as a Hartwick College graduate he was part of the school’s men’s soccer team on a European tour. The idea of taking American teams to Europe evolved into a full-time business for the young entrepreneur, who founded American International Sports Exchange, the first American company to develop soccer tours for teams in the United States.

Through the company, Marcos established a network of international soccer contacts that would serve him throughout his career marketing the game in North America. Many prominent college and professional coaches in the United States got their first taste of international soccer thanks to Marcos’ tours.

Marcos then moved into the professional game in the United States, spending more than 10 years as part of the North American Soccer League. His work in NASL began as a volunteer in 1973, when Marcos was asked by his Hartwick College coach, Al Miller, to help recruit players from Europe to join the expansion Philadelphia Atoms. The players Marcos was able to recruit, among them future Liverpool coach Roy Evans and NASL First-Team All-Stars Andy Provan, Chris Dunleavy and Jim Fryatt, helped the Atoms win the NASL championship in their first season.

After that success Marcos joined the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 1974 as the expansion franchise’s director of public relations and vice president of soccer operations. The Rowdies won the NASL Championship in their first season in 1975, and thanks to agreements Marcos brokered between the Rowdies and Brazilian powerhouse Sao Paulo, the club began a series of games sponsored by Pan American Airlines. The Rowdies’ partnership with Sao Paulo also saw players from both teams move back and forth from Brazil to the United States and helped the Rowdies became one of the marquee franchises in the league.

Marcos was also active in Tampa’s local soccer community, playing host to a weekly Rowdies radio show and providing color commentary for their televised games. Under his tutelage the Tampa Bay Area’s youth soccer organization would blossom into the Florida Youth Soccer Association.

Marcos then took on a new challenge, again with Miller, as he went to the Dallas Tornado for the 1979 NASL season as vice president of personnel. After missing the playoffs the previous season, Marcos and Miller were able to lead the Tornado to the playoffs in each of their two seasons with the club.

After a brief foray into Canada to help Miller establish the Calgary Boomers, Marcos returned to Tampa to work for the Rowdies early in the 1981 season, and remained with the club until 1985. Along with owner George Strawbridge, Vice President of Marketing Marty Rothberg, General Manager Chas Serednesky and Coach Eddie Firmani, Marcos helped make the Rowdies one of the pre-eminent and best remembered clubs in NASL history.

It was then that Marcos made the boldest move of his career. The seeds for what would become United Soccer Leagues were sowed when Marcos founded the Southwest Indoor Soccer League, which in addition to hosting its own indoor league also played host to the first national amateur and youth indoor tournaments.

Marcos soon looked to expand his league’s reach, adding a men’s outdoor development league in 1989. A professional level was added in 1995, and a youth division in 1999, as Marcos’ vision of a complete pyramid of development came to fruition.

Marcos was also highly involved in developing the women’s game in the U.S., establishing the W-League in 1995. The first league of its kind in the world, the W-League offered the opportunity for players to compete and develop in a professional environment. Among those who have competed in the W-League are U.S. Internationals Kristine Lilly, Christie Rampone, Tiffeny Milbrett, Shannon Boxx, Tobin Heath and Alex Morgan, while the W-League’s Buffalo Flash recently became Women’s Professional Soccer’s newest franchise.

Marcos has also been a key member in U.S. Soccer circles. A member of the USSF Soccer Board or Directors since the 1993-94 season, Marcos was also a member of the U.S. Soccer Foundation from 1997 until 2009. As a member of the USSF, he was the head of the U.S. Delegation for three FIFA U20 World Cups - 1999 in Nigeria, 2001 in Argentina and 2005 in the Netherlands - and was the official team liaison for Brazil’s national team during the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Marcos has also been on numerous U.S. Soccer commissions, including the Co-Chair of the USSF International Task Force from 2007-08.

In addition to his work for the USSF, Marcos has had a long-standing commitment to showcasing the game through the media. From hosting his own television show in the late 1960s in Oneonta, N.Y. to being a radio host and color commentator during his NASL days, Marcos also founded the magazine Soccer Monthly which eventually became the official magazine of the USSF. Marcos has also attended every World Cup since 1970 as either a fan or journalist, most recently covering the 2002 and 2006 World Cup for the Tampa Tribune.

“Francisco has left an indelible mark on the modern history of U.S. Soccer,” USL President Tim Holt said. “The work he has done not only for professional clubs and United Soccer Leagues but also the U.S. Soccer Federation has helped manufacture the growth the sport has seen over the course of his career. It has been a privilege to work alongside him for USL.”

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Saturday, February 19, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando City’s history got off on the right foot as they defeated Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union 1-0 in a preseason exhibition at the Citrus Bowl.

Philadelphia was reduced to 10 men early in the game when Carlos Valdes brought down Orlando’s Max Griffin just outside the penalty area. Valdes was shown a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity, changing the tone of the game quickly. On the resulting free kick, Lewis Neal bent the shot over the Union wall and past keeper Fayrd Mondragon for Orlando City’s first ever goal.

The Lions controlled the run of play the entire match. When Philadelphia went down a man, the Lions hold on the game only got tighter. Standing out for City was winger Jamie Watson. The former Generation Adidas member looked very much the seasoned professional, with creative passing and a constant work rate.

Despite the creativity, the Lions could not convert their many chances. The players chalked it up to being early in the preseason.

“That was the first time [this preseason] I’d passed to Max [Griffin], and it showed,” said Watson. “We both missed a couple chances that we should have converted.”

Griffin was a late addition to the Orlando City camp, arriving mid-week.

Also shining for City was goal scorer Lewis Neal. In addition to his set piece goal, Neal took full advantage of the Union’s disadvantage all game long. Philadelphia played with a three-man back line following Valdes’ early exit, and often left the left wing exposed. Neal was more than happy to fill the gap, leading to several open crossing chances. Neal’s efforts kept the keepers busy all night long.

Next up for Orlando is the first round of the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic on Thursday. City looks to make it two MLS teams in a row when they take on FC Dallas at 6 pm at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. A win on Thursday puts the Lions within reach of their first ever silverware, the Pro Soccer Classic championship.

Tickets for both nights of the PSC are still available. Visit http://www.orlandocitysoccer.com/tickets/disney/ for more information, or call 407-536-5368.
