USL News Release

Monday, May 16, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues is pleased to announce it has entered into an agreement with the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) and will operate North America’s most storied and tradition-rich professional indoor soccer league beginning with the 2011-12 season.

The MISL represents the top level of professional indoor soccer in North America and currently consists of seven franchises for 2011-12, with additional announcements expected in the coming weeks. The league roster includes existing MISL franchises in Baltimore, Milwaukee, Kansas City and Wichita. They will be joined in the MISL by a trio of first-year USL indoor franchises in Norfolk, Rochester and Syracuse.

The League will be led by Chris Economides, senior director of USL’s professional leagues. Scheduling, competition and playoff format and rules for the MISL will be determined by the league’s Board of Governors.

“We are obviously pleased to bring the top indoor soccer league in North America into the USL family,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. “We announced several months back that we would be operating a professional indoor soccer league in November of 2011, and this agreement with the MISL allows us to move forward with our plans. Combining the experience and tradition of the MISL with USL’s team services and league management resources will ensure the MISL reaches new levels of success.”

The MISL will follow a financial model that is viable for team owners. USL intends to seek affiliation under the U.S. Soccer Federation umbrella, consistent with its other league properties.

"We are all pleased to join USL which has many strong leagues and numerous franchises," MISL Chairman Ed Hale said. "This will give us a platform for future expansion of our indoor game throughout the country."

MISL indoor soccer was developed to appeal to sports fans around the world. The fast-paced, fiercely competitive game is played on artificial turf on a hockey-rink-sized field surrounded by dasher boards and Plexiglas with eight-foot high by 14-foot wide goals receded into the end boards. Creative dribbling, pinpoint passing, acrobatic goalkeeping and rugged defensive play are all skills demonstrated by MISL players.

A typical MISL game features end-to-end-action resulting in approximately 60 shots and 11 goals per game. Each game includes four 15-minute quarters and a popular feature is multi-point scoring, with goals from long distance worth more. Other unique characteristics of the MISL include action-packed power plays and free substitution of players while play continues.

Reading United News Release - www.readingunitedac.com

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

READING, Penn. – Reading United announced two “friendly” matches, including one against the United States Under-17 National Team on Sunday, May 22, with a time and place still to be announced. The U17 National Team game will act as a tune-up for the Americans, who will travel to Mexico in mid-June to take on the best in the world during the FIFA U17 World Cup. The team has recently included players from the Philadelphia region such as Zach Pfeffer, 16, the Philadelphia Union’s first Home Grown signing from Dresher, Penn., and Zack Steffen, a Downingtown product who plays for FC Delco. The team is coached by former Colombian international and FIFA World Cup veteran Wilmer Cabrera, who has led the team since 2007.

“It’s going to be great for me personally,” Reading Technical Director (and former National Team player) Troy Snyder said. “It’s a tremendous honor for the young men on the U17 National Team and for our Reading United team to be considered worthy opponents to prepare the US players for the U17 World Cup.”

The New York Cosmos, who are trying to secure an MLS franchise, will send their U23 squad to Reading on July 22 at Exeter’s Don Thomas Stadium. The U23 Cosmos, who are named after and claim lineage to the original New York Cosmos who played in the former North American Soccer League from 1971-1985 and sported players such as Pelé, are currently playing an exhibition schedule in preparation for their acceptance into the Premier Development League next season.

“Obviously we’re thrilled about this opportunity for our players, team, and fans, Reading United President Art Auchenbach said. "This further exemplifies the level of credibility established by Reading United, and PDL teams in general, and our constant push for exposure of our team to various levels of the game. No other pro-am soccer organization in our region has our quality of player, staff, or programs. Adding the US National Team and NY Cosmos to our schedule that already includes top-notch games with the Harrisburg City Islanders and Philadelphia Union speaks volumes about who we are and what we offer our players and fans.”

Before United takes on the U-17 team, it first must take on PDL opponents Westchester (N.Y.) Flames and the Ocean City Nor’easters. On Wednesday it will face the Flames, who are coming off a 3-0 defeat against the Jersey Express this past weekend, after trouncing the New Jersey Rangers by the same score the week before. The last time the two teams met was in 2006, as they split two games, both by a 2-0 margin.

Reading then returns home for a Friday evening matchup against the Nor’easters for a special affair at Oley Valley High School. Last season, Reading tied Ocean City twice. Three points were snatched away from United in their first meeting, as two goals by the Nor’easters in the 76th and 82nd minutes erased a two goal United lead. Reading returned the favor, as Reading’s James Wenger scored a goal in stoppage time to knot up their July 10th meeting at 1-1 in Ocean City, NJ.

For the Ocean City game, 50% of all pre-sold tickets and 10% of the walk-up sales will go towards establishing a scholarship fund in memory of Mark McKently, an Oley Valley soccer player who recently lost his life in a fatal car accident. Pre-sold tickets can be purchased by contacting Oley Valley’s head boys soccer coach Shawn Meals at smeals@ovsdpa.org. All other tickets can be purchased through readingunitedac.com or at the gate.

USL News Release

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. - United Soccer Leagues announced today that the sixth annual Super-20 League North American Finals presented by Umbro would take place July 21-24, 2011 in Tampa, hosted by the Brandon Flames of the USL Super Y-League. The Thursday-Sunday event will bring together the top 17- to 20-year-old men’s and women’s talent from clubs throughout the United States and Canada.

The North American Finals will be contested at the Brandon Flames’ J.C. Handley Sports Complex, located just minutes from downtown Tampa. The nine-field complex recently underwent a multi-million dollar upgrade to become one of the preeminent soccer complexes in Florida. Brandon was selected through a bid process involving several USL youth clubs.

“We are extremely excited to bring the 2011 Super-20 North American Finals to the Tampa Bay area,” USL Senior Director of Youth League Development Brian D’Amico said. “The J.C. Handley Complex offers first-class facilities for the teams that will be competing for national championships, and we are confident the Brandon Flames will raise the level for the event.”

There are currently six geographic divisions in the men’s Super-20 League with 55 teams hoping to earn spots at the North American Finals, while the women’s Super-20 League features 29 teams in five divisions. Teams in those divisions will qualify during the regular season to earn the right to compete in the finals. Bid allocations for the Super-20 Finals will be announced later this week.

As the only U20 men’s and women’s North American amateur league and a member of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association, the USL Super-20 League provides the platform for top 17- to 20-year-olds in the United States and Canada to compete at the elite level. While serving as a reserve team system for many W-League and Premier Development League teams, the USL Super-20 League features teams competing in regional divisions, consisting of 8-10 regular season matches throughout the summer months.

Teams must battle through the arduous Super-20 League regular season to earn spots at the North American Finals where they will face competition from the Mid Atlantic, Midwest, New England, Pacific Southern California, Rocky Mountain, South Atlantic, and Northwest divisions.

United Soccer Leagues News Release - www.uslsoccer.com

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced the first W-League Team of the Week of the 2011 season today, with Rashidah Sherman of the New York Magic named the Player of the Week. Sherman, the 2010 W-League Rookie of the Year, picked up where she left off in 2010, surging to the top of the league’s scoring charts with a hat trick in a 3-0 win against the New Jersey Rangers.

Sherman paced by opponents last year with her blistering speed and scored goals in droves with her deadly finishing. She began 2011 by showing she hadn’t lost a step.

“We are still looking for somebody who can stop her,” New York Magic head coach Nino DePasquali said. “From the first touch on the ball she is uncatchable.”

New York’s 3-0 victory in its opener gives the club a fast start in its quest to bring home a division title in 2011. Goalkeeper Aleta Smith also played a big part in the opening Magic victory. Smith did her part to stake claim to the No. 1 goalkeeping spot after making eight saves in the clean-sheet win.

Just down the east coast, the Charlotte Lady Eagles opened their W-League campaign with a victory after a game-winner from forward Christy Rife. Fellow Lady Eagle Blakely Mattern also grabbed Team of the Week honors with solid defensive effort, keeping a clean sheet on the backline.

Megan Tomlinson is another player who maintained her stellar play from 2010 as the midfielder scored a goal in Atlanta’s opening win. Teammate Tiffini Turpin doubled Megan’s tally with two goals in her W-League debut.

The weekend featured plenty of strong midfield play as Vancouver’s Tiffany Weimer started the season off with a two-goal effort against Victoria. Virginia Beach’s Emily Kittleson also showed well in the middle, putting in a strong performance.

Pali saved their victory until late this weekend, but there was hard work on the field all match with Anisa Guarjardo playing well and assisting on the game-winner. Pali teammate Elizabeth Eddy also had a great match in the shutout victory.

Katie Tarrant had a superb game in the debut of the LA Strikers as the fill-in defender excelled in her new position.

Reading United News Release - www.readingunitedac.com

Thursday, May 18, 2011

READING, Penn. – A day after the Cleveland Cavaliers came out winners in the NBA Draft Lottery, a different kind of Cavalier led Reading United A.C. to victory in New Rochelle, NY. University of Virginia teammates Will Bates, Brian "Cobi" Span and Brian Ownby combined for three goals and two assists in a 4-1 thumping of the Westchester Flames in a rain-soaked affair. All three goals came within a 13-minute period that started late in the first half and ended any thoughts of a Flames comeback.

Reading had numerous chances to break through in the first half. The first came a low line drive off the foot of Lasse Sohrweide that just missed the far post. Then Flames keeper Greg Crumpstone showed off his athleticism on a pair of saves around the 32nd minute, including a diving stop on a Christian Barreiro penalty kick. United finally tallied their first goal in the same minute, as defender Matt Hedges put home a Christian Barreiro feed in the box.

The first goal prompted the impressive display by the Cavalier teammates.  Bates tallied his first of the season on a beautiful goal in the 41st minute, putting a low cross from Shane Malcolm just inside the near post.  A mere minute into the second half, Bates struck a Span cross from the right corner first-time past a helpless Crumpstone. Span finished the United scoring on a through-ball from Ownby that found its way between the Flames defenders.

The Flames finally got on the board in the 83rd minute, when United keeper Brian Holt was called for a yellow card in the box, after making an aggressive stop on Westchester's Jake Keegan. Keegan converted on the penalty kick, but it was too little, too late for the Flames.

Reading returns home Friday night for the last of their U.S. Open Cup Qualifiers as they take on the Ocean City Nor’Easters at a special venue (Oley Valley H.S.) for a special cause – Mark McKently Scholarship fundraiser.  Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, May 22, Reading will take on the U17 U.S. Men's National Team as a preparation match before it heads to Mexico for the U17 World Cup.  Reading United are home again for two professional friendlies on May 24 against the Harrisburg City Islanders and May 31 against the Philadelphia Union).

Dayton Dutch Lions News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Thursday, May 19, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Dayton Dutch Lions FC kick off their fifth straight home game on Friday at 7.30 p.m. at Miami Valley South Stadium as they face off against  USL PRO National Division leader the Los Angeles Blues, who entering the match with a record of 4-2-1. The Dutch Lions have teamed up with Evenflo and Dayton Children’s for the first annual DVD, book and game drive for the Children at Children’s Medical Center of Dayton. The match will be broadcast live at USLlive.com.

“If we can continue the level we showed against Orlando City I will be sure we will have a good result,” said Head Coach Ivar van Dinteren. “We must be concentrated the whole game so we won't make stupid mistakes. We have lots of confidence after our two friendlies.”

The Lions are back this Friday after a week away from USL PRO action. The Dutch took two victories in friendly matches this past week against the USL Premier Development League's Cincinnati Kings and Wright State University and are feeling confident heading into the match. Sitting at the bottom of the National Division, the Dutch Lions fell narrowly at home 1-0 against Orlando City in their last USL PRO match. Unable to find the net for an equalizer and going down a man in the second half, the Dutch have been consistently coming up just short. The Lions will continue to search for an offensive stride and a win at home.

After dropping a 2-1 result against Charlotte at home last Saturday, Los Angeles is coming off a heartbreaking defeat. Standout midfielder Walter Gaitan scored for the Blues in the 75th minute against Charlotte, only for a late goal by the Eagles' Jorge Herrera to give his side the three points. Gaitan will be a player for the Dutch Lions to keep an eye on, posting impressive results thus far and leading the team in points with four goals this season.

For more information visit the Dutch Lions official website at www.dutchlionsfc.com. Support Dayton Children’s miracle fund by making a donation, join the Dutch Lions and lead sponsor for the match Evenflo as we highlight four of Dayton Children’s amazing ambassadors. The Miracle Fund helps kids like Casey Mowen, ambassador for the night, who had a baseball-size tumor removed from his brain. Thanks to the best pediatric health care available in the Miami Valley, Casey has recovered from Stage IV brain cancer and is in remission. All toys, DVDs, games, and movies collected for the first annual event will be donated to Dayton Children’s and taken to the medical center by the Dutch Lion players.

Richards, who was named the PDL Most Valuable Player in 2010, scored three consecutive goals as the Timbers earned their first victory of the season. It was the third hat trick in the club’s history.

Richards was joined on the Team of the Week by fellow forwards Nathanial Foster, who had a pair of goals in Mississippi Brilla’s 3-1 victory against the FC JAX Destroyers, and Keith Detelj, who scored three goals in two games for the Long Island Rough Riders in a pair of victories last week.

USL Feature

Thursday, May 19, 2011

By NICHOLAS MURRAY

SANFORD, Fla. – There are certain things Orlando City midfielder Lewis Neal is thinking about as he sets the ball before him to take a free kick.

He sees the defensive wall before him, the position of the goalkeeper, the spaces he thinks he can hit. He thinks about the number of times he’s fired the ball towards goal not just in games but also during the endless repetitions after practice that have brought him to this point.

He also visualizes the ball hitting the back of the net, and while the final part of the equation hasn’t happened every time Neal has teed a free kick up this season, it’s happened often enough for him to have quickly become a favorite of Lions fans.

“If it goes in, great,” Neal said. “Fortunately enough in the time I’ve been here up to now it’s been working for me, so I hope that continues.”

It couldn’t have started any better for Neal. In his first preseason game for the Lions a bending free kick from just outside the penalty area gave his side a 1-0 victory against Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union. After a handful of similar moments that either resulted in goals or near-misses, including a game-winning free kick against F.C. New York last month, Neal has started to generate his own phenomena at the Lions’ home games.

“All of a sudden every time we get a free kick all the cameras come out trying to get a picture of a goal going in,” Orlando City coach Adrian Heath said. “I think that tells you he’s making an impression with people.”

It’s definitely the impression Neal was hoping to make as he came to Orlando looking for a fresh start after going through a tough spell in England with Shrewsbury. After being in and out of the side with injuries in the 2009-10 season, and the team underperforming as a whole according to Neal with a 12th-place finish, when a new manager arrived over the summer he became surplus to requirements at the club and was left looking to find the same feeling as he had when he turned professional as a 16-year-old with Stoke City 11 years ago.

“That was a really frustrating time because at the end of the day you just want to play football and I just wasn’t enjoying it,” Neal said of his time in Shrewsbury. “To come here and come to America and start playing again and get in there and get your form back and get playing regularly has been a massive help.

“Since I’ve gotten here, I’ve just genuinely enjoyed playing over here. I’ve enjoyed my time in America, and if you’re enjoying yourself off the field and are happy off the field then on the field it makes you a lot happier and makes it a lot easier to play.”

Neal also believes the leadership Heath has shown has also been a big benefit. Already aware of his reputation thanks to playing against Heath’s sides in England, Neal said the opportunity to play for him in Orlando meant he didn’t have to think twice before agreeing to make the trip across the Atlantic.

At the same time, Heath is very glad to have Neal in Orlando.

“I think at this time it was a good opportunity and a good challenge for him,” Heath said. “Obviously, we’re not naïve enough to think that he didn’t want to come out here and go to MLS, but we’ve given him the opportunity to show what he can do, and if he keeps performing like he is I’m sure someone in the MLS will have an interest in him.”

If Neal keeps playing the way he is currently, that certainly could be the case. Already named to the USL PRO Team of the Week twice this season, Neal’s knowledge and experience has allowed his creativity and knack for finding space in midfield and attacking areas to thrive. As a result, the Lions put together an impressive run of form, going 5-0-1 since they dropped their opening game of the season.

But Neal believes that USL PRO hasn’t seen the best of the Lions yet.

“As a team, I still don’t think we’ve quite hit the heights we can,” Neal said. “I think we’ve still got a lot to come, so for us to have a nice little run as we have up to now without having played at what I believe is our best is quite a good sign.”

If Neal’s assessment is as on target as his free kicks have been this season, the Lions will remain a force for the remainder of the season, and beyond.

Laredo Heat News Release -- www.laredoheatsc.com

Thursday, May 19, 2011

LAREDO, Texas -- The Monterrey Rayados Under-20 soccer team trotted out some projected Mexican national players when they played a friendly against the Laredo Heat Thursday night at the TAMIU Soccer Complex. The Heat could not contain the Rayados’ speed and ball movement as it dropped a 3-2 decision.

“This is good practice for my team. This game gave me an opportunity to see all the players on the roster,” Heat coach Israel Collazo said. “I am happy with the game. The important game for us is the one on Saturday (at Rio Grande Valley) and that is the one that we are thinking about.”

The Rayados scored 15 minutes into the game on a well-designed play. After getting the ball deep in Heat territory, Cesar De La Pena took a pass and let the ball fly 25 yards away from the net beyond the reach of Laredo goalie Maros Valko for a 1-0 lead.

The Heat were patient on offense in the first half, looking for a small seam of opportunity to get one by Rayados goalie Justin Perez. The opportunity came in the 42nd minute when a familiar face to Laredo soccer put the team on his back, attempting to get the Heat back into the game.

Felix Garcia found himself in familiar territory, deep in an opponent’s field. He took a pass from midfield and, with a burst of speed, took charge at the goal with three Rayados defenders hanging on to him. Garcia shook off the defense and found a clear shot 30 yards from goal as the ball sailed just beyond the reach of the goalie’s hands and knotted the 1-1.

Laredo outshot the Rayados 6-3 in the first half, but only was able to punch one into the net.

Collazo utilized the second half to give many of his starters a rest and give quality minutes to those who don’t see the field as often.

“This game just really showed me all the players and what they could do,” he said. “They made a couple of goals when I made the substitution, but we are fine with that.”

Six minutes into the second half, the Rayados took the lead once again on a shot by Marcelo Cazaubon. The Rayados were not done penetrating deep into Heat territory, however, adding to their lead six minutes later on a goal by Alejandro Garcia.

Heat forward Esteban Bayona scored for the home side to make the score 3-2 in the 61st minute but that was all the offense the Laredo club could muster for the remainder of the game.

Back to the PDL Regular Season

After taking a short break from their Premier Development League (PDL) regular season to play the Rayados de Monterrey Under 20’s, the Heat (2 – 1 – 0, 6 points) will be back at it as they head to Edinburgh, Texas for their first away game in 2011 to take on the expansion Rio Grande Valley Grandes (0 – 3 – 0, 0 points) on Saturday at Edinburgh Field. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.

The two teams opened their respective 2011 PDL Regular Season versus each other in Laredo on Friday, May 6th with the Heat taking that contest by a score of 5 – 1.

“We definitely expect a different game when we visit their place this weekend,” Collazo said. “The Grandes have since played against El Paso and West Texas United at home and though they lost those games, both defeats were only by one goal.

“I expect to see a different line-up from them as I have seen that “Chuy” Mireles is now part of their team, which is good to see because he is one heck of a player. I have already told our players to forget the El Paso loss at home last week and that now it is time to focus on getting back on track with the rest of our regular season.”

Wilmington Hammerheads News Release -- www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Friday, May 20, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Wilmington Hammerheads will be hosting their South Carolina rival, the Charleston Battery, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Stadium.

The Hammerheads and the Battery have played several friendly matches against each other in the past, along with a few U.S. Open Cup games. The two teams have always maintained a positive relationship with a “neighborly” sense of rivalry. Saturday night will mark the first game that the Hammerheads and the Battery have met in the same league and division.

Both teams have experienced wins in their 2011 USL PRO season. Out of the eight games that Charleston has played this season, they have come out with three wins, two ties, and three losses. Overall, Charleston has racked up eleven points and is currently sitting fourth in the American Division.

The Hammerheads, who have a winning record at home, have earned nine points in the four games that they have played thus far this season. Their only loss was against the undefeated Richmond Kickers at City Stadium in Richmond, Va.

Saturday’s match up will mark the first game of the Southern Derby Cup for the Wilmington Hammerheads. The Southern Derby Cup is a fan based cup competition between the three USL PRO teams in the Carolinas, the Wilmington Hammerheads, the Charleston Battery, and the Charlotte Eagles. This derby was created by the fans of the participating teams in order to encourage fans to travel to away matches.

The winner of the Southern Derby Cup is designated by the total number of points earned in matches against each participating team. The point system is three points for a win, one point for a tie, and zero points for a loss. The first edition of the Southern Derby was contested in 2000 between the Charleston Battery, the Atlanta Silverbacks, and the Raleigh Capital Express.

Being that the Hammerheads have made Legion Stadium a winning fortress so far this season, Charleston has no easy feat ahead of them; although, two out of the three Charleston wins have been on the road. With the level of talent and depth that both teams’ posses, along with the rivalry created by the close proximity of the two locations, Saturday night’s game will be sure to be a high-energy match in both the stands and on the field.

Ticket prices at Legion Stadium are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 65+, and $6 for kids ages 4-12. Avoid lines at the stadium and purchase tickets online at www.wilmingtontickets.com.

D.C. United Women News Release - www.dcunitedwomen.com

Friday, May 20, 2011

GERMANTOWN, Md. - Former U.S. Women’s National Team forward Christie Welsh has joined D.C. United Women. Pending league approval, the WUSA and WPS vet will serve as both a player and assistant coach for the newly-formed W-League club, which opens its first season next Wednesday, May 25 with a visit to the New Jersey Wildcats. Following another away match at New York Magic Sunday, June 5, United opens its home season Thursday, June 9 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

Welsh, who won the M.A.C. Hermann Award as a junior with Penn State in 2001, is the second player with senior U.S. National Team experience to join United, following current 20-year-old Nittany Lion midfielder Christine Nairn, who signed with United for the summer recently after narrowly missing a spot on the 2011 World Cup roster for team USA.

"The second I heard about the D.C. United team I knew I wanted to be involved," said Welsh, who was capped 39 times with the national team and netted 20 goals during her international career. "My past W-League experiences have been great ones and I look forward to being a part of another winning group."

D.C. United Women coach Mike Jorden said he is excited to bring on a player and coach with Welsh’s international experience.

"Christie brings with her international experience at the highest level," Jorden said. "She will play an important role for the club on the field, and just as important, in helping guide our younger players who are new to the this level."

As a forward with the national team, Welsh scored 11 goals in 15 games for the United States in her first full year with the team in 2000. One of those goals was in her senior team debut against the Czech Republic.

In 2002, Welsh was a member of the U.S. U21 National Team that won the Nordic Cup Championship. Then, after nearly a two-year absence from the senior team, scored against Brazil in her first game back in 2004.

Welsh was also a member of the national team side at the at the 2005 Algarve Cup, where she netted the game-wining goal in championship match against Germany, and earned the Golden Boot Award as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals.

Welsh scored 82 goals and added 52 assists in a sterling four-year career at Penn State, which saw her honored as the first ever four-time NSCAA All-American in the history of women’s collegiate soccer.

The native of Massapequa Park, NY said she is already fitting in with the D.C. United Women players and staff.

"Working alongside Mike Jorden and [assistant coach] Cindi Harkes has been a tremendous experience thus far and I look forward to learning from them both," she said. "And General Manager Tim Schweitzer has already put together an incredible staff and organization.

"This is an exciting experience to be part of creating an elite soccer environment once again in the DC area."

D.C. United Women fill the vacancy left by the departure of the Washington Freedom Futures and will play their home slate of matches at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland. Also the former home of the WPS Washington Freedom, the SoccerPlex is an ideal showcase for women’s minor league soccer in the DC metropolitan area.

The team kicks off the 2011 campaign next Wednesday, May 25 when it travels to face 2005 W-league Champion New Jersey Wildcats. It will follow that with a trip to face the New York Magic on June 5, before opening its home season at the SoccerPlex, Thursday, June 9 at 7 p.m. against the Wildcats. United will play five regular season home matches, and 10 games overall, plus a potential for some exhibitions. Should it win the Eastern Conference, the team would have the right to host the conference final four playoff weekend in mid July, where the winner would then head to Seattle for the W-League Championships the following weekend.

The first and longest-standing women’s league in North America, the W-League is USL’s highest level of women’s soccer in the United States and Canada. In addition to featuring international and professional stars, elite amateur players have the opportunity to compete on amateur teams in the league while maintaining their collegiate eligibility.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Friday, May 20, 2011

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (1-3-2) return to Chartiers Valley Stadium this weekend for back-to-back games against two USL PRO expansion clubs. F.C. New York (Saturday, 7 p.m.) and Los Angeles (Sunday, 5 p.m.) travel to Pittsburgh for critical National Division fixtures this weekend.

F.C. New York sits even with the Riverhounds with five points in the National table, while Los Angeles stands alone at the top of the standings with 13 points.

The Riverhounds’ defense has not allowed a goal at home this season and will look to maintain their defensive prowess this weekend. Spearheaded by solid play from goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap and center back Louie Rolko the Hounds defense has recorded three shutouts and allowed six goals so far in the USL PRO season.

On the other end of the field, the Riverhounds’ offense has been held at bay by their opponents. The main focus for the squad in training this week was to jump into the attack and create advantageous situations in the offensive third with extra players joining the offense.

F.C. New York

F.C. New York is coming off a back-to-back weekend in the Carolinas. In the first game, New York recorded its first win as a professional club with a 1-0 victory against the Charleston Battery (3-3-2). The victory for New York marked the Battery’s first loss at Blackbaud Stadium since 2009. Following the game in Charleston, New York traveled north to take on the Wilmington Hammerheads (3-1-0) but came up short at Legion Stadium with a 3-1 final.

On the attack for F.C. New York, Graciano Brito creates problems for opposing defenses with his pace and imagination and he is likely to keep New York within striking distance. Brito recorded both goals for F.C. New York last weekend.

Los Angeles Blues

Los Angeles travels to the east coast for two National Division games this weekend. The first place Blues match up against the Dayton Dutch Lions (0-4-0) on Friday night before they travel to Pittsburgh for a meeting on Sunday.

The Blues’ offense is led by midfielder Walter Gaitan and forward Akeem Priestly. Gaitan is tied for second in the league in points (10), third in goals (4) and tied for third in assists (2). Priestly has recorded two assists and added a goal for the Blues.

Tickets can be purchased by calling into the Riverhounds office at (412) 539-1191 or at the ticket gates on game day. Tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for youths.

USL Feature

Friday, May 20, 2011

By NICHOLAS MURRAY

When the Wilmington Hammerheads were looking at players to build their roster for the 2011 season, Coach David Irving know of one place that would likely be able to provide a number of quality young players for their squad.

Photo courtesy Wilmington Star-NewsAnd thanks to a number of former members of the USL Premier Development League’s Ventura County Fusion, the Hammerheads have hit the ground running, winning their first three home games of the season.

So far the leader of the latest group to join the club has been defender Ivan Becerra, who has a goal and has appeared in all four of the Hammerheads games. But Becerra has been joined by Emmanuel Guzman and Dylan Riley, both of whom have also played in all four games, and Hakop Aveysan, who has made two appearances off the bench.

The relationship between the Hammerheads and Fusion began thanks in part to a long-time friendship between Irving and former Fusion coach Graham Smith. The duo played together in the old North American Soccer League and remained friends long after their playing days were over and they went into coaching. With Smith leading the Fusion’s program, he was able to point Irving towards players who were ready to play at the next level.

“There’s a lot of players on the west coast that we don’t get to see and it was a great way to utilize them,” Irving said of the relationship. “I know they’re a good PDL model and that even though they’re amateur they’re pretty professional in the work they do and they have a good organization, and I know the players they would get would be good kids, good professionals and technically pretty good.”

While Smith retired after the Fusion won the 2009 PDL National Championship, the Fusion have continued to produce talented players. What’s impressive, though, is that while the club regularly loses a number of players each spring to MLS and USL teams, it has maintained its high standards of play year-in and year-out.

“I think our club’s philosophy is to look for players that we believe have the qualities that will allow them to succeed at the next level,” current Fusion coach Ole Mikkelsen said. “So although we had a rather large exodus from last year’s team, we’ve actually had players move on every season, whether it be MLS, or USL or even two that have gone overseas, so there is always a certain amount of turnover for us every season and the challenge is always to replenish your roster with players that we believe have the abilities that will allow them to move on.”

Mikkelsen was an assistant to Smith for two years before taking over upon his retirement. With the Fusion playing a number of games against MLS and international competition - in recent years the club has played English clubs Portsmouth, Burnley and Everton when they’ve been in California for preseason training - the players at the club are able to see up close what it takes to make it at the next level.

Getting to see so many of its former players have success in the professional ranks, including current Philadelphia Union rookies Michael and Gabriel Farfan, the Rochester Rhinos’ Alfonso Motagalvan and Plymouth Argyle’s Anton Peterlin, certainly is gratifying for the club.

Finding players that have the attributes to become professionals in the future is an important element the Fusion look for when trying to build their squad each season, and something they feel professional coaches like Irving value when trying to bring a new player up from the PDL ranks.

“I think David Irving has a background here having played in the old North American Soccer League, as I did, where we’re looking for similar qualities in players,” Mikkelsen said. “I don’t want to call it ‘old school’, but at the end of the day there are many elements to becoming a successful footballer, it’s not just skill on the ball and scoring goals and the like. There’s a lot of mental fortitude that is required and football intelligence, if you will, required, so it’s a full package.”

But the preparation the players get with the Fusion, who this spring played six preseason games against MLS competition as both got ready for their respective seasons, certainly shows when the former Fusion players make the jump to the next level.

“They’ve done a heck of a job,” Irving said. “They have a little different model to most where they have international games against Premier League clubs and MLS clubs and obviously their players are able to play more than most PDL clubs.”

With the Hammerheads and Fusion off to good starts in their respective seasons, the relationship between the clubs is certainly paying dividends for all concerned.

Dayton Dutch Lions News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Friday, May 20, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Dayton Dutch Lions FC secured a point at home against the Los Angeles Blues Friday Night at Miami Valley South Stadium, their first in USL PRO after a hard-fought and physical match-up ended in a 1-1 draw. After an early goal by Blues forward Jhonathan Bravo, the Dutch Lions were able to find the back of the net to equalize in the 60th minute through Kolby Lacrone.

“The second half is how we envision the way we want to play,” said Assistant Coach Jack Hermans. “Effective running, great work ethic, soccer intelligence, all things clicked after the goal. The substitutions worked out, and the team effort was great. I have nothing but compliments for the defense tonight, they created no holes for the Blues offense.”

The Dutch Lions started off the first minutes of the match strong, keeping the ball in the Blues' defensive third until a break down in the sixth minute. A clearance by the Lions' defense was converted by Bravo for a goal off a volley past Dutch Keeper Jesper Leerdam. Slow to recover, the Dutch Lions looked to create offensive opportunities with no avail until the 41st minute. A glimmer of offensive power came as Dutch native Marvin van der Pluijm bent a cross into the box intended for Lacrone, but the two were unable to find a solid connection as an outstretched Lacrone looked to tie up the match.

Entering the second half a goal down, the Dutch Lions needed to find a way to equalize. Determined to find the back of the net, the Lions' offense found a rhythm, and in the 60th minute their hard worked paid off as a ball played through for Lacrone sent the Dutch Lions forward to the races with the Blues defense. With one defender to beat and Blues goal keeper Oscar Duatt cutting off the angle, Lacrone ripped a shot, and despite a great deflection from Duatt the ball fortunately found its way into the net to equalize.

“It was a great feeling to finally get the monkey off our back," Lacrone said. "I think we sent a message to the league tonight that we are a contender.”

In the final minutes of the match both sides were looking for an opportunity to take the lead and solidify three points; unable on both sides, the last chance came in the 89th minute from Dutch Lions substitute Kyle Segebart, in for Lacrone. A lofted shot over the goal ended the scoring opportunities as Segebart tried to catch Duatt creeping off his line.

The Dutch Lions return to action Saturday, May 28th against Charlotte at Fifth Third Field for the first ever professional soccer match played at the Dragons' home stadium. Hoping to keep the momentum going into the next matchup the Lions continue to fight for their first victory this USL PRO season.

Rochester Rhinos News Release -- www.rhinossoccer.com

Friday, May 20, 2011

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Rhinos maintained their undefeated home record on Friday night at Sahlen’s Stadium as they earned a 0-0 draw against Orlando City. Rochester entered the match on a two-game home winning streak in which they failed to surrender a goal each time. Neither team however was able to establish an edge in a match-up featuring two of the league’s top teams. Rochester earned its third straight home shutout to open the season as goal keeper Neil Kitson ran his streak of scoreless minutes to 272.

After 25 minutes of play which saw the two teams battle evenly, Orlando seemed to gain some momentum taking play to the Rhinos. Rochester began to mount pressure in the 28th minute as JC Banks launched a deep throw in from the right sideline into the Orlando City penalty area. Tyler Rosenlund found himself in perfect position to put a shot on goal from the 12 yards out, but just pushed his shot over the crossbar. Orlando City also nearly scored in the 32nd minute off a corner taken by Lewis Neal. The ball trickled out to Yordany Alvarez who hit a laser from 18 yards that was blocked by the Rhino’s defense and cleared out of bounds.

Alvarez again had a great chance in front of the Rochester net, this time in the 34th  minute, but ripped a shot that Kitson denied with a diving save. Moments later Kieron Bernard was unsuccessful on his attempt that went just over the crossbar.

Neither team was able to manage quality scoring chances the rest of the first half as the first 45 minutes ended scoreless. Tensions started to run high in the second half as fouls and yellow cards mounted. A collision at midfield in the 67th minute resulted in Rhinos defender Connor Tobin being forced from the match and Rochester’s Banks and Orlando’s Kevin Molino receiving yellow cards.

In the 83rd minute, Rochester’s Andrew Hoxie snuck through the middle of the Lion defense but the final Orlando defender was able to just clear the ball out of bounds leading to a Rhino corner. Tyler Ballamy got a decent look at goal off the corner kick, but Orlando City keeper Miguel Gallardo was there to make the save.

In the 86th minute Orlando City’s Lewis Neal had his free kick blocked by a Rhino defender, setting up an Orlando corner. The Lions had two decent looks at goal off the corner, but Kitson and the Rhinos defense stood strong and held the score at 0-0.

“I think we played pretty well defensively” said Rhinos Head Coach Bob Lilley. “Orlando was good tonight however. They played physical and didn’t give us a lot of room.”
