River Plate Puerto Rico News Release -- www.rivercaribe.com

Saturday, April 23, 2011

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico -- Despite finishing the game with nine men, River Plate Puerto Rico was able to hold on for a 1-1 draw against the Los Angeles Blues and its second point of the USL PRO season at the Estadio Roberto Clemente Walker on Saturday night.

Martin Morello and Yaniel Bermudez were both sent off for River, and Los Angeles also finished the game short-handed as Cesar Rivera was shown a red card.

Rivera had given the Blues the lead in the 12th minute after a long pass from the left by Mike Randolph created the opportunity. Both Rivera and Morello were then sent off in the 34th minute after a confrontation in the center of the field.

Trailing at halftime, River manager Walter Zermatten switched strategies, and the introduction of Eloy Matos proved decisive as he scored in his comeback from a long layoff due to injury to tie the game in the 58th minute.

River was reduced to nine men in the 73rd minute, though, as Bermudez received his second yellow card. But River was able to withstand Los Angeles’ late pressure, denying the Blues their fourth win in their season-opening four-game road trip. With the rigors of the trip, the Blues will likely be very pleased to return home with 10 of a possible 12 points.

Both River Plate and Los Angeles face Antigua Barracuda FC next, with River hosting the ’Cudas on Friday before the Blues welcome Antigua for their home opener next Sunday.

Dayton Dutch Lions News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Saturday, April 23, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio – The Rochester Rhinos earned their first victory of the USL PRO season as Alfonso Motagalvan, J.C. Banks and Anthony Hamilton each scored in a hard fought 3-2 win against the Dayton Dutch Lions FC on a rainy Saturday night at Miami Valley South Stadium.

The Dutch Lions started out strongly and took the lead early through a header by forward George Davis IV after a good cross by Julius Willie. The Rhinos hit back quickly through Motagalvan to tie the game, though, and Banks gave Rochester the lead in first-half stoppage time.

Rochester added to its lead in the second half as Hamilton made the score 3-1. With time winding down and weather conditions worsening for the second straight week, the intensity on the field increased, and the Dutch Lions pulled a goal back in the 88th minute as Kyle Sebegart latched onto a pass from Joe Tait before finishing.

Dayton also came close to finding an equalizer in stoppage time, but Tait was unable to find the back of the net.

“Overall the Rhinos deserved the win,” Dutch Lions owner Mike Mossel said. “We were sloppy in the back and we created their goals ourselves. If we had the solid defense we had in the second half we would have won. Despite not reaching our level for the larger part of the game we still could have tied the match the same as last week’s.

“Joe Tait’s header was cleared of the line and his free kick just went wide by an inch. It would have been great for the team and the staff to get a tie after working so hard, but I’m confident if we keep progressing and we take those mistakes out of the back we will have a great season.”

The Dutch Lions will try to earn their first victory in next Saturday’s match against Richmond at home at 7.30 p.m. For more information and tickets visit www.dutchlionsfc.com and follow on Facebook and Twitter @Daytondutchlion.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Saturday, April 22, 2011

PITTSBUGH, Pa. - On a cool rainy evening, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds won their USL PRO home opener and the first Keystone Derby of the season as Shintaro Harada’s goal early in the second half gave them a 1-0 victory against the Harrisburg City Islanders on Saturday night at Chartiers Valley Stadium.

The Hounds converted on their first offensive opportunity of the second half thanks to a savvy flick from Chad Severs to an on-rushing Harada. Riverhounds defender Sterling Flunder settled a clearance from the City Islanders and served a low left-footed cross into the box for Severs. With a defender on his back, Severs flicked the ball over his marker for Harada slashing through the box. Harada confidently slid the bouncing ball past Harrisburg goalkeeper Chase Harrison to record the only goal of the game.

The first half was a battle of possession giving both the Riverhounds and City Islanders limited scoring opportunities. The Riverhounds’ focus was to build through the midfield, while the City Islanders were playing direct soccer. With two different styles of play on the field, the action was extremely high paced and physical.

After Harada opened the scoring, the City Islanders nearly equalized in the 56th minute off a weak clearance by the Riverhounds. Harrisburg’s Andrew Marshall delivered a diagonal ball in to Anthony Calvano at the Riverhounds’ back post. Calvano rose up to head the ball past Riverhounds’ goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap only to see his effort cleared off the goal line by Jason Kutney.

2010 USL-2 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton had an immediate impact off the bench for the Riverhounds, putting pressure on the City Islanders’ defense. In the 77th minute, Deighton beat Harrison on a bouncing ball, only to see his shot hit the post. Five minutes later, fellow forward Jason Yeisley skimmed a deep service onto the foot of Deighton only to see the crossbar deny his effort.

The missed opportunities didn’t come back to haunt the Riverhounds, though, as they earned their first victory of the season.

The Riverhounds return to action next weekend for a two game road trip. On Friday the Riverhounds take on the Wilmington Hammerheads (1-0-0) at Legion Stadium and then travel overnight to face the Charleston Battery (2-1-0) at Blackbaud Stadium Harrisburg will host the Rochester Rhinos (1-1-0) next Saturday at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island.

Richmond Kickers News Release - www.richmondkickers.com

Saturday, April 23, 2011

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers (4-0-0) earned revenge on the Charleston Battery (2-1-0) in dramatic fashion, with a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory against the 2010 USL-2 champions. Charleston forward Levi Coleman gave the visitors an early lead with a 15th-minute tally before Richmond midfielder David Bulow leveled the score in the second half. Newcomer Shaka Bangura thrilled the Richmond crowd of 1,833 with the 90th-minute, game-winning goal.

Entering the match just seconds earlier, Bangura saved the day for the home side, registering his first goal of the season, in his first minute of play in a Kickers uniform. Dave Hertel regained possession at midfield and fed the ball to a streaking Bangura on the right wing. With fresh legs, he barreled down the flank and slotted a rocket-shot from 12 yards into the far corner to lift the Kickers to victory.

It was a tale of two halves as the Battery controlled the field during the first 45. Applying pressure directly out of the gates, the Battery tested Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale within the first two minutes of play. Midfielder Kevin Jackson attempted a shot from distance but his ambitious strike dipped just over the crossbar seconds after the opening whistle.

Three minutes later, midfielder Nicki Paterson served an early ball into the box, finding Coleman in the air. Coleman’s driven header from close range ricocheted off the far post and was easily caught by Pascale. Coleman was not to be denied a second time, notching the first half’s lone goal in similar fashion in the 15th minute. This time, it was midfielder Cole Peverly, positioned on the far post, who looped a header across the goal mouth finding Coleman four yards out. His point blank header skimmed Pascale’s fingertips as it landed squarely in the net.

The Kickers’ best chance of the half came minutes before Charleston’s tally when midfielder Stanley Nyazamba played the ball back to Gerson dos Santos. Carrying the ball forward, he delivered it into the mix from the top of the crowded box, finding Edson Elcock in the penalty area. The swift midfielder attempted a bicycle kick but the ball sailed just wide of the target, sending the Kickers into the locker room trailing by one.

Following the second half restart and a pair of changes to the lineup, the momentum shifted to the Kickers advantage. The Richmond midfield put the Charleston defense through the paces with a barrage of shots within the first eight minutes, but it was not until the 63rd minute that the home side could sneak past the staunch back line.

Entering the game at the half, forward David Bulow immediately made his presence known, brining the score level. Midfielder Mike Callahan lined up a corner kick and delivered an inswinger into the box, connecting with an airborne Bulow at close range, burying his header into the back of the net.

The Kickers stifled the Battery attack until Bangura’s 90th minute tally lifted them to the fourth victory of the season.

“Overall, we did very well,” said Mike Anhauser, Charleston Head Coach. “We got the first goal and kept them under pressure in the first half. They are good on set pieces and were able to equalize. It looked like it would go in 1-1, but it was a good finish and unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the points tonight.”

“We were very disappointed at halftime because we didn’t come to play,” commented Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. “We were naïve, played too negative and had a few choice words at halftime.”

“I knew if we could get a goal, we could go on to win the game,” continued Cowlishaw. “The important part is we got a lot of contribution from the squad. A lot of the guys were very good in training this week so I knew when we needed them, they would step up. All five guys that came on made the difference and helped us win the match tonight.”

The Kickers conclude their four-game home stand with 12 points at the top of the table and head to face expansion club Dayton Dutch Lions next Saturday, April 30. The Kickers return to City Stadium on Saturday, May 7 to host the Wilmington Hammerheads at 7:00 p.m.

Charlotte Eagles News Release -- www.charlotteeagles.com

Saturday, April 23, 2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Eagles earned their first point of the USL PRO season as they drew 0-0 with F.C. New York on Saturday night at Charlotte Christian Stadium. Eagles goalkeeper Eric Reed received Player of the Match honors after his first shutout as an Eagle.

The Eagles applied pressure early as the midfield was able to find holes in New York’s defense. Chris Salvaggione, with a great cross from the right, just missed Ben Page for a header that could have given the Eagles the lead.

Charlotte quickly followed up with a few similar situations but came away with nothing to show for it. Reed had his first test shortly after as he saved a shot from Graciano Brito in the 11th minute.

Josh Rife continued to apply pressure as he collided with New York’s goalkeeper Derby Carrillo just outside the box from a cross by Luke Williams. Rife’s shot just missed the crossbar in the 15th minute, while Carrillo was unable to continue after the collision and was replaced by New York’s back-up keeper Steve Diaz.

Midway through the first half the game found its pace. New York, able to build a few promising spells of possession, could not successfully penetrate the Eagles’ defense, but for all their control of the flow of the game, the Eagles were unable to capitalize and find a goal before the halftime break.

Salvaggione came closest for the Eagles, firing a rocket from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar.  Moments later, he missed just wide with a header. The Eagles continued throughout the latter part of the first half to bombard New York’s box, but had nothing to show for it despite outshooting New York 7-2 in the first half.

The second half began much more evenly with both sides creating chances.  Eagles coach Mark Steffens, looking to add speed to his side, brought Walter Moore into the game with 27 minutes to go.

Relying on their speed up front. the Eagles fell back on the long ball, trying to dump the ball over New York’s defense. New York was able to answer by controlling Sallieu Bundu in the center.

With just over 20 minutes to go the Eagles found a couple of consecutive corner kicks that put the scare in New York, but they could not get the ball into the net. New York answered with a few close calls as well, one of which forced a great diving save from Reed.

However, the game ended scoreless, giving both teams their first points of the season.

The next Eagles home game is Friday, April 29, 2011 against Charleston Battery at Winthrop stadium. Purchase your tickets online at www.CharlotteEagles.com.

USL Feature

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

By NICHOLAS MURRAY

When you go to the website of the Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism board, the grasp of the sport of cricket is evident. With legendary West Indian players such as Sir Viv Richards, Curtly Ambrose, Andy Roberts and Richie Richardson all hailing from the islands, cricket has always been perceived as the country’s preeminent sport.

But if you’d arrived at the Sticky Wicket Stadium on April 17 with that conception, as Antigua Barracuda FC hosted its first home game in USL PRO, you might have been surprised.

However, the raucous crowd and environment didn’t come as a surprise to the team’s captain, George Dublin.

“It was absolutely fantastic,” Dublin said by phone recently. “I know Antiguans are a footballing public; we have total football fanatics here, we love the game a lot, and the atmosphere was absolutely fantastic. With it being the first game, the players, they came in and were excited to see the atmosphere and how it was on Sunday.”

The Barracuda earned their first victory of the season on Saturday night as Stefan Smith scored twice in a 3-2 win against Sevilla FC Puerto Rico and heads out on its first road-trip of the season this week. That the team has reached this point has a lot to do with the organization of the club’s executive board and Head Coach Tom Curtis.

Curtis was formerly a professional player in his native England before moving into the coaching ranks as the head coach at Loughborough University, one of the premier sports institutions in the country. Curtis also assisted the academies at clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Derby County, but when he heard about the opportunity with the Barracuda from his friend and Antigua and Barbuda Football Association technical advisor Bryan Hamilton, he jumped at the chance.

“I spoke with (Hamilton) a couple of times, I spoke with the executive committee, I expressed my interest in the post and I managed to get the post and here I am,” Curtis said. “I’m very excited to be here; it’s a huge adventure for myself personally, and it’s something that I’m really looking forward to.”

One of the first players Curtis targeted was Dublin. Now 34 years old, Dublin had been playing in Trinidad for a number of different teams, but Curtis and others persuaded him to come back home and be part of the ‘Cudas. According to Curtis, Dublin’s presence on the team has been invaluable.

“George has been a vital cog in the Barracuda wheel in the last six weeks,” Curtis said. “He’s the one that knows all the players, he’s played with all the players, he’s a really sensible lad, he looks after himself, he looks after the rest of the players and when you’re putting the team together you need someone like that in the dressing room that the lads look up to and respect.

“He makes my job a lot easier; he helps pass on information to the other players, so it’s been fantastic that we’ve got him on board, and he’s bought into all the tactics and the game plan that I’ve tried to put in to the club.”

Dublin was glad to be able to return back to his home country and help raise the profile of the sport he fell in love with as a youngster.

“The community I grew up in was much more a footballing community than it was cricket,” Dublin said. “I would always find a game and go out to the field and watch the bigger guys and fell in love with the game, and from then on I was always into soccer. My mum kept pushing me on, because she was a football fan from her school days.”

The ultimate goal of the club, and the players, is to help Antigua build a strong national team program. Currently No. 100 in the overall FIFA Rankings, and 13th in CONCACAF, Curtis hopes that the club can facilitate a move up the standings, and to find success within CONCACAF itself.

“We want to give the players the opportunity to play on a big stage and develop to move on to different clubs and represent the island in the national team,” Curtis said. “We’ve got 24 games over the next couple of months, we’ve got a lot of games coming up in a short period of time and hopefully some of the players that have that opportunity to get onto the big stage and really develop themselves as people and players.”

With the support the club appears to be set to get from its fans, though, the Barracuda appear to be on the right track to find success at the club level as well.

“It was fantastic to see so many people supporting the team, and it’s really nice that the team itself has lots of players from different communities and different clubs,” Curtis said. “It’s one of the first times that people can come and watch players from their community and support other players. It’s a really nice experience for everyone, and with the band that was playing and the entertainment before and after the game, I really think it will be one of the most exciting venues in USL and teams will really look forward to coming here.”

Antigua Barracuda News Release -- www.antiguabarracudafc.com

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

ST. JOHN’S , Antigua – Antigua Barracuda FC embarks on its first overseas trip as a professional unit, where the 'Cudas will be entertained by Puerto Rico United at the Aguada Stadium in western Puerto Rico, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

The team, still high in confidence after recording its first USL PRO victory against Sevilla FC, is looking forward to the challenge.

“This is another test of our young franchise as we seek to adapt quickly and positively at this level," Team Manager and Director of Football for the Barracuda FC Fernando Abraham said. "We know the boys are eager to show they are capable of handling this situation and we hope it will result in improved performances every time we play.”

The team participated in an unscheduled practice at the Sticky Wicket Stadium this morning, as they were unable to travel as planned.

Asked if he thought this would impact negatively on the players Abraham countered, “It is not ideal but these things happen. The important thing is that we have already begun to prepare mentally for this, it may be tight, but we will be ready to play when we get to Puerto Rico.”

Team Captain George Dublin looking forward to the three game road trip added, “We are taking it one game at a time, the lads are in very good spirits and we have no major injuries to report. We will have to make some changes to the defence as Roy Gregory will miss the next game, but we have adequate cover and expect another disciplined performance.”

Barracuda FC will on this trip take on Puerto Rico United, River Plate, and LA Blues, they return home on May 2nd with the next home game scheduled for May 6th at the Sticky Wicket Stadium.

Ottawa Fury News Release - www.ottawafury.com

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

OTTAWA, ON - The Ottawa Fury W-League regular season kicks off in four short weeks and they will have four names from 2010 joining them for their run at a W-League Championship. Tina Romagnuolo will return for her third W-League season in Ottawa, while her Syracuse University teammate Casey Ramirez enters her second campaign in the nation’s capital. Fresh off an amazing season with the Laurier Golden Hawks, Canadian International player Alyssa Lagonia will don the Fury colours for her second W-League season as will Graceland University midfielder Shay Eskridge. All four players return to the Fury coming off very successful season’s at their respective schools which the club hopes to see continue in the W-League season.

"It is always tremendous to have players of this level return to our W-League team," expressed Fury W-League head coach Dom Oliveri. "Casey and Tina were major contributors to our squad last season and we are excited to have them back again for this year. We are also happy to have Alyssa back in our squad after her numerous stints over the last few years with Canada’s Senior National Team, while Shay is coming off another tremendous collegiate season."

Tina Romagnuolo has 25 W-League games under her belt over the past two seasons with the Fury where she has tallied 3 goals, none bigger than her game-winner against Quebec City last season in the 90th minute. She has proven to be a force for the Fury in the midfield - a determined player who always comes out with the ball and is always on the hunt to win-back possession in the all-important midfield. Romagnuolo has two NCAA seasons to her credit with the University of Syracuse where she has 13 goals and 1 assist for 27 points in 38 career games with the Orange. She has been named to the All-Big East Second Team in each of the past two seasons and has let the team in goals and points over that span as well. She was also named to the All Rookie team in 2009. Tina was a red-shirt in 2008 as she was part of the Canadian U20 Women’s World Cup squad that competed in Chile.

While Casey Ramirez appeared in 9 regular season games for the Fury in 2010, it was her strong and intelligent play in the post-season that really got everyone’s attention playing a key role in the Fury’s playoff run. The Yardley, PA native returns to Ottawa after a very strong junior year at the University of Syracuse proving to be one of their most valuable defenders. In three full seasons with the Orange, Ramirez has started all 57 games and has two goals and three assists during that time. After spending her freshman year as a midfielder, Ramirez moved to defence in 2009, a move that has proved worthwhile for both Ramirez and Syracuse.

The Laurier Golden Hawks have proven to be a strong team in the CIS for several seasons now, but this past fall Alyssa Lagonia played a key role in helping them all the way to the CIS National Championship Final where they fell in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Queen’s on the shoulder of a goal from Lagonia’s W-League teammate Riley Filion. In three seasons as a Golden Hawk, Lagonia’s side has racked up an impressive 27-8-7 record and are now ranked 5th in Canada. She has been named to the OUA First-Team All Stars in each of her three seasons at Laurier and was named a CIS All-Canadian and CIS Tournament All-Star in 2010. The Kitchener, ON native has also been part of the Canadian U20 and Senior Women’s team program for the past several years. She played in 10 games in 2010 for the Fury W-League and will be a key component to their roster this summer.

With only three W-League games to her credit with the Fury in 2010, Shay Eskridge will look to build on an impressive collegiate season after being named to the NAIA’s 1st Team All-Conference squad in 2010 helping Graceland to a 15-1-3 record. The native of Rowlett, TX has played a crucial role in the midfield for the Yellow Jackets scoring 17 goals and 34 assists for 68 points in 81 careers games.

The Ottawa Fury Women open the 2011 W-League campaign on the road May 28 and 29 against Rochester and Hamilton respectively before returning to Ottawa for their home opener on June 3 when they will face the Rochester Ravens for the second time in 6 days.

Portland Timbers News Release -- www.portlandtimbers.com

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Timbers U-23s took their first step in defending their USL Premier Development League (PDL) championship from a year ago, when they stepped on the field for their first official training session at JELD-WEN Field Tuesday morning. The season’s first game is just around the corner on May 7.

As preseason opens, the training group is comprised primarily of players still trying to earn their way onto the squad. Many of the team’s collegiate players are still completing their academic obligations.

“It’s a feeling out process more than anything,” said head coach Jim Rilatt following the first day. “(Some were) star struck just being on the field for some of these guys.”

Back for Day 1 of training were a handful of familiar faces. Members of the 2010 PDL championship team and University of Portland teammates Ryan Kawulok and Ricardo Carrillo were present for the first day of practice to help get the ball rolling for the new season.

“A little sloppy the first day, but we’re going to get it sharper and we’re excited to be back under Jim again,” said Kawulok, an All-Western Conference defender in 2010. “It felt really good to be out here again with some of the guys from last year and it’s exciting to get this thing rolling again.”

Today was the first official day of training for the defending champions, who open the PDL regular season in a couple of weeks against the Victoria Highlanders at JELD-WEN Field on Saturday, May 7th.

“It was a pretty fiery practice with a lot of intensity, so it was really exciting.” Kawulok said.

Notes:

Today’s session included 14 players – 12 field players and two goalkeepers.
Training activities included possession drills, ball work, and a short-sided game.
The team’s 2011 roster will be announced in the coming days.

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando City Soccer Club, along with presenting sponsor Orlando Health, is proud to announce the launch of “Goals for Good”, a charity contest initiative designed to support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. Participants will make pledges based on their number of goals they believe Orlando City will score throughout the season. The person who guesses correctly will win a prize pack that includes an autographed jersey and premium tickets.

“We are excited to be joining with Orlando Health to raise funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit,” said Kay Rawlins, Director of Community Relations for Orlando City. “Some of the tiniest babies in the unit weigh less than a can of soda – hard to imagine. Help us to help them continue to provide the highest level of care to the tiniest babies by guessing the goals and pledging your dollars!”

Participants are asked to pledge per goal and then guess how many goals Orlando City will score during the 2011 USL PRO regular season. Any pledge amount will be accepted, but the recommended amount is $1. Last season, Head Coach Adrian Heath’s Austin Aztex squad scored 53 goals in the USSF Division 2-Pro League. Heath brought several players from that Aztex squad, including current USL PRO goals leader Max Griffin, with him to Orlando.

“The babies in Winnie Palmer Hospital’s NICU are often the most critical, tiniest and in need of the most care. Community support ensures these inspired and advanced services are here for generations to come,” said John Bozard, president of Arnold Palmer Medical Center. “We’re thrilled that Orlando City Soccer has come up with this unique concept to give back to the smallest citizens in Central Florida.”

The person who correctly guesses (or comes closest) to the final season total will win a jersey signed by Head Coach Adrian Heath and the 2011 Orlando City roster as well as two premium tickets for the 2012 Orlando City home opener or a 2011 playoff game. Participants will also be asked to guess the number of goals City will score at home games this season.

To participate, fans are asked to visit www.orlandohealth.com/goalsforgood. There they can register and indicate their pledge per goal.

After playing at Oviedo High School, Chin was a standout forward at Rollins College. During his time at Rollins, he also played for the Central Florida Kraze in the USL Premier Development League. In his final season at Rollins, Chin scored seven goals and registered three assists in 15 games.

“This feels great,” said Chin. “It has been a lot of hard work. Getting a chance to play with such a great organization, with Coach Heath…I’ve learned a lot. It is an honor to play for my local team. Growing up in Oviedo, the highest level we had was college soccer. This is a dream come true.”

Chin appeared in six matches for Orlando City during the 2011 preseason, starting once. He scored a goal against UCF, and assisted Devorn Jorsling on a goal against Stetson.

“With both Justin and Dennis, we see the potential for growth,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “They know this is the first step of a long road. What’s important is they both want to be professional players. They try very hard, they train well, and they give themselves the best chance. I’ve seen loads of players who had all the talent, but lacked the desire to be a professional and don’t want to do all of the hard work. These two are prepared and committed enough to do that.”

Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Justin Fojo grew up in Lake Mary, playing at Lake Mary High School. He played his college soccer at the College of Charleston. He was named to the College Soccer News All-Freshman team, and was also named to the All-Southern Conference team. Fojo has dual citizenship with Trinidad and the United States. While in college, he was called up by the Trinidad and Tobago national team for a friendly against El Salvador, but did not play.

"This is truly a dream come true,” said Fojo. “Ever since I was 12 years old, I distinctly remember telling myself how great it would be to play professionally."

Fojo saw limited time during the preseason as he was finishing up his degree at the College of Charleston. He played in two matches, starting once before returning to school. He will join the team next week after completing his classes.

Charleston Battery News Release -- www.charlestonbattery.com

Thursday, April 28, 2011

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery head to Charlotte, N.C. on Friday night for a 7 p.m. match against the Charlotte Eagles looking to rebound from their first defeat of the USL PRO season. The game is being played at Winthrop University Stadium and will be broadcast live in Charleston on 1340 AM The Boardwalk and via an audio only webcast at www.charlestonbattery.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45 p.m.

Friday’s match against Charlotte is part of a back-to-back weekend for the Battery, who return to Blackbaud Stadium on Saturday night to take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 7:30 p.m.

Charleston defeated Charlotte 1-0 in the opening game of the season on April 9; the lone goal was an own goal scored by Charlotte after Battery striker Dane Kelly angled a ball across the face of goal from the right side of the penalty area.

The Battery saw their unbeaten start to the season end last Saturday night in Richmond as the Kickers came from behind to earn a 2-1 win. Levi Coleman put Charleston ahead with a 15th minute header but Richmond scored twice in the second half to maintain their 100 percent start to the season.

Pittsburgh also plays a game on Friday night as the Riverhounds visit the Wilmington Hammerheads. The Riverhounds earned a road win against the Harrisburg City Islanders last weekend in their second game of the season with Shintaro Harada scoring the game-winner.

Pittsburgh is coached by former Charleston Battery midfielder Justin Evans, and their roster includes the 2010 USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year Hunter Gilstrap and last years USL-2 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton.

Wilmington Hammerheads News Release -- www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Thursday, April 28, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads take the field at Legion Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for their second game of the 2011 USL PRO season against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds aiming to build on their 1-0 win against the Rochester Rhinos two weeks ago.

The Hammerheads made a strong showing against Rochester as rookie midfielder Luke Mulholland scored the game-winning goal and rookie goalkeeper Brock Duckworth posted a shutout, both in their professional debuts.

Both Duckworth and Mulholland were named to the USL PRO’s Team of the Week last week. Despite playing with a broken hand, Mulholland’s persistence in the midfield is likely to be visible in Friday night’s game.

As his side prepared for the Riverhounds, Head Coach David Irving had high expectations for his team.

“Friday’s game against Pittsburgh is a must win for us,” said Irving. “It is important that we make our home field of Legion Stadium a fortress for the rest of the season. Any win is crucial, but wins at home are vital.”

Team Captain Ivan Becerra is expected to remain a key component in the Hammerheads' defensive line-up, and midfielders Manny Guzman and Paul Nicholson are likely to have an impact against the Riverhounds.

Pittsburgh travels to Wilmington after a road win against the Harrisburg City Islanders. Shintaro Harada will certainly be a strong force in the midfield for the Riverhounds after scoring the game-winning goal in their 1-0 victory against the City Islanders.

Pittsburgh also has a few key returnees and additions for the 2011 season. Goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap was named the USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year in 2010 and is back for the 2011 season, while Thabiso “Boyzzz” Khumalo’s previous experience with Major League Soccer's D.C. United should be beneficial. Paired with 2010 USL-2 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton, the two attackers are likely to keep the Hammerheads' defenders on their toes.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 65-and-older, and $6 for kids 12-and-under. Gates open at 6 p.m. Special group rates are available. Contact the Wilmington Hammerheads’ office for more information.

River Plate Puerto Rico News Release – www.rivercaribe.com

Thursday, April 28, 2011

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico – River Plate Puerto Rico will try to earn its first victory in USL PRO this season as it hosts Antigua Barracuda on Friday night at 8: 00 p.m. at the Estadio Roberto Clemente Walker.

Both teams are coming off victories, Antigua having defeated International Division rivals Puerto Rico United 7-0 on Wednesday behind four goals by Peter Byers. River also took victory on Wednesday night, defeating FC Mayagüez 3-1 in the PRSL, which should lead to an exciting contest on Friday night.

River’s players and coaches are expecting a difficult game with Antigua likely to employ a quick, physical game. That style of play is well known by the River players, who are expected to counter with their normal style of holding possession, controlling the midfield and finding explosiveness in the offensive end.

It would therefore not be surprising should River’s coach Fabián Zermatten adjusted his line-up from Wednesday, realigning some key players to give the team more offensive flow.

With the characteristics of either side being diametrically opposed, it paves the way to what should be an interesting contest where the performance of the players will decide the outcome.

Antigua is in the middle of a three-game road trip, which finishes in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. River will next travel for a pair of games in Antigua next weekend in what could be a good guage as to who might reach the USL PRO playoffs at the end of the season.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Thursday, April 28, 2011

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Riverhounds (1-1-0) travel to the Carolinas this weekend for a Friday night matchup against the Wilmington Hammerheads (1-0-0) and a Saturday night contest versus the 2010 USL-2 Champions, the Charleston Battery (2-1-0). The Hammerheads play at Legion Stadium while the Battery plays in the state-of-the-art Blackbaud Stadium. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Last Time Out for the Riverhounds

The Riverhounds opened up their home season this past Saturday and recorded their first win of the year over in-state rival the Harrisburg City Islanders (0-1-0). The Keystone Derby did not disappoint, as the high paced and physical action kept everyone on the edge of their seats. An early second-half goal from Shintaro Harada was all the Riverhounds needed to secure the victory.

Last Time Out for the Hammerheads

The Hammerheads are coming off a bye week over the Easter weekend. Their home opener and first game in more than a year ended with a 1-0 victory against the Rochester Rhinos (1-1-0). Luke Mulholland’s individual effort landed the Hammerheads the game-winner in the 52nd minute.

Match Outlook

The Riverhounds will focus on building possession from the back to help support the attack. With central midfielders Harada and Sammy Appiah looking to control the pace of the game, Pittsburgh’s attack will start from the defensive third. Playing through the midfield and off target forward Jason Yeisley, the Riverhounds will look to overlap Yeisley and find the channels to balance out the attack.

The well-rested Hammerheads will look to pressure the Riverhounds all over the field from the game’s opening whistle. The Hammerheads roster is filled with multiple first- and second-year players looking to make an impact at the professional level. The balance between young professionals and veteran leadership should make for an intense battle on Friday.

Last Time Out for the Battery

The Battery is coming off a tough 2-1 road loss to the Richmond Kickers (4-0-0) this past Saturday. Charleston took the lead in the 15th minute off the head of second-year pro, Levi Coleman. The Kickers’ David Bulow brought the home side level in the 63rd minute. Shaka Bangura’s goal in added time provided the Kickers their fourth win in as many games.

Match Outlook

The Riverhounds and Battery know each other well from last season. The two clubs met four times in 2010. The first ended in a draw and the remaining three games ended with a deciding one goal margin. The Battery claimed the head-to-head record with two wins, one loss and a tie. Finishing the regular season at the top of the table, the Battery played host for the final and captured the 2010 USL-2 Championship last August.

The Saturday night meeting between the Riverhounds and Battery should be interesting, as both sides play Friday night in North Carolina. The effects of the dreaded back to back weekend should be apparent on the field in Charleston.

The Battery will stream the game live on www.usllive.com. Don’t miss out on any of the USL PRO action!

Sevilla FC Puerto Rico News Release -- www.sevillafutbolclubpr.com

Thursday, April 28, 2011

JUNCOS, Puerto Rico -- After a few days of deserved rest and training after return from Antigua, Sevilla FC Puerto Rico will return to USL PRO competition as they host International Division rivals Puerto Rico United on Friday at 8 p.m. at Juncos Stadium.

Sevilla earned its first win of the season while in Antigua, splitting a pair of games with Antigua Barracuda FC last weekend to give the club five points from five games so far in the league. Friday’s contest will be a great opportunity for Sevilla to earn its first win at home after dropping their home opener to the Los Angeles Blues.

After just missing out on victory in the club’s first match against PR United earlier this month, a stoppage-time goal by Hector Ramos earning United a 1-1 draw in Carolina, Sevilla is aiming for revenge for the side considers was a missed opportunity.
While it was able to earn a 2-2 draw against Orlando City last Friday, Puerto Rico United is coming off a 7-0 defeat against Antigua on Wednesday afternoon that saw Peter Byers score four goals in the first half.

Sevilla coach Francis Muñoz doesn’t expect the many changes to his starting line-up, but he was glad to be able to have a few extra days of training with the side since their arrival back from Antigua. The team is hoping to build on the positive elements of last weekend’s game, such as the performances of forwards Alain Gustave and Eli Gordley, who will be key players if the team is to have success for the next few games.

Antigua Barracuda FC News Release -- www.antiguabarracudafc.com

Friday, April 29, 2011

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua -- Antigua Barracuda FC will go into Friday’s USL PRO game against River Plate riding a wave of confidence having inflicted a heavy 7-0 defeat on Puerto Rico United on Wednesday afternoon in western Puerto Rico. The team travelled back to San Juan early Thursday afternoon and got their first opportunity to train at Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium in preparation for their next outing.

Captain George Dublin, who filled the right back position, enforced as a result of the two yellow cards Roy Gregory received in the home game against Sevilla FC said, “Although the score line is a little flattering, we are aware that there are no easy games in this league and we know that teams will be gunning for us, especially after this result, but we will continue to look after our strategies first and seek to impose them as best as we can on the opposition.”

Having scored four goals before half time Peter “Big Pete” Byers was happy to break his duck in such an emphatic way but remained sober to the challenges ahead.

“This was a good result for us but we cannot become complacent or overconfident. There is a long way to go in this league and with such a tight schedule we must take care not to drop our guard against any team,” he said.

On a personal note he concluded, “I had a few debts to pay from some goals I did not put away in out last home game so I am happy to get these four, every day will not be like this but I will continue to work hard for the team.”

Antigua Barracuda FC have an important few days ahead with River Plate PR and International Division leaders the Los Angeles Blues to complete their three-game road trip, but with results as seen in the last two games, optimism, hope and belief dwell deep within the ranks.

Dayton Dutch Lions FC News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Friday, April 29, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio – The Dayton Dutch Lions FC will continue to look for their first victory in the USL PRO season as they take on the undefeated Richmond Kickers on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Miami Valley South Stadium. The match will be broadcast live at USLlive.com.

“This game will be a challenge for us. Richmond is a very good team, their undefeated record is proof of that, but if we play our game we can win. If the guys come together and play as a team there is no doubt that we will be fine,” said Head Coach Ivar van Dinteren.

The Kickers currently lead the American Division with a 4-0-0 record, their most recent victory against division rival the Charleston Battery who narrowly defeated the Dutch Lions in their home opener 2-1. Kickers newcomer Shaka Bangura scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute to give Richmond its fourth victory at home.

The Dutch Lions are eager for their first notch in the winner's column after two close losses to USL PRO veterans the Battery and the Rochester Rhinos. Last weekend, in a nail-biter of a loss to Rochester, the Dutch Lions were unable to pull out of a one-goal deficit after returning defender Kyle Segebart scored in the 88th minute to bring the Lions back into the match. Unable to equalize in the final minutes, newcomer to the Lions and USL Premier Development League Defender of the Year in 2010 Joe Tait narrowly missed a shot on goal in his debut this season.

The match this Saturday will celebrate Queen's Day, one of the largest and most celebrated Dutch holidays. Lead sponsor for the match, Typicaldutchstuff.com, will be selling everything typically Dutch and will be rewarding the most creative and elaborately dressed fan.
