Charlotte Eagles News Release -- www.charlotteeagles.com

Friday, February 15, 2013

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Eagles are happy to announce that they have signed midfielder Drew Yates to a contract for the 2013 USL PRO Season. Yates, 24, is a product of the University of Maryland where he played in 92 games while starting 39 of them. While at Maryland he was a part of the 2008 NCAA Division I Championship team and he finished his career with 14 goals and 13 assists and received numerous honors for the Terps.

Drafted by the Chicago Fire in the second round (29th overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, Yates would go on to play for FC Tampa Bay in 2010 and went on trial with SK Sigma Olomouc of Czech First Division in January of 2011. Yates followed that up with a two-year stint with the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL PRO. While playing for the City Islanders he helped lead them to the quarterfinals of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup, knocking off two Major League Soccer sides, the New England Revolution and the New York Red Bulls, along the way. Yates played in 21 games for the City Islanders in 2012 finishing with one goal and one assist on the year.

"Our coaching staff is real excited about signing Drew Yates for this season." said Coach Mark Steffens "He is a creative midfielder that is very dangerous in the attack. I expect him to make a strong contribution this season."

Yates echoed Steffens' sentiments, "I'm very excited to be a part of the Charlotte Eagles organization and even more excited to bring Coach Steffens attacking vision to the field."

"I couldn't be more happy for him," said Yates' representative, Tony Poarch. "This partnership and similar vision between a quality attacking player that has the ability to change the game from center midfield and the Eagles organization that has it right in signing him, is a testament of good things to come. Charleston Battery News Release -- www.charlestonbattery.com

Saturday, February 16, 2013

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- On an unusually cold evening in Charleston, the Chicago Fire defeated their MLS counterpart the Houston Dynamo 3-2 to open the 10th annual Carolina Challenge Cup at Blackbaud Stadium. The opening game of the tournament was action packed as the Fire came up with the win, with Dilly Duka scoring his first goal for the club since a recent trade from the Columbus Crew.

The Dynamo started strongly with a goal early on in the 14th minute by Adam Moffat, who struck from a set piece from just outside the penalty area. Moffat's fierce drive went through the Fire's defensive wall and snuck by Chicago goalkeeper, Sean Johnson.

The Fire responded in the 24th minute with a great breakaway move and an excellent finish by Sherjill MacDonald as he hold off his marker before finishing with a low effort. The Fire struck again two minutes later as Duka's shot deflected in off a Dynamo defender, and the Fire made it 3-1 three minutes into the second half as Jeff Larentowicz headed home powerfully from Joel Lindpere's corner.

Houston got back into the game in the 64th minute as a great finish by Cam Weaver off a corner by Brad Davis made it 3-2, but the Fire came closest to scoring following that, Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall saving Maicon Santos' penalty kick with six minutes to go. The miss didn't come back to haunt the Fire, however, as they took an opening victory ahead of their game on Wednesday night with the Charleston Battery.

VANCOUVER 3, CHARLESTON 2: The Charleston Battery made a valiant effort to overcome a three-goal deficit in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the Whitecaps got a pair of goals by rookie Kekuta Manneh to claim victory.

Vancouver moved the ball with speed in the first half as Manneh recorded two goals at in the fourth and 27th minutes to lead his side to a 2-0 halftime lead. Manneh, who starred last season for the PDL's Austin Aztex, used his quickness to beat the Battery defense twice down the left side of the pitch and added an excellent touch each time to find the back of the net.

The Battery missed a huge opportunity in the 43rd minute as a nice pass from Zach Prince through the middle found Jose Cuevas, only for the 2012 USL PRO Rookie of the Year's shot to miss wide to the right of the net. The Whitecaps pushed the issue further with a goal in the 50th minute of play as Daigo Kobayashi connected with a terrific volley to make it 3-0 in favor of Vancouver.

Down by three, the Battery had a tall task ahead of them, but with their backs against the wall, they came out and played a nice second half of soccer. Nicki Paterson got his side on the board with his first goal of the 2013 season in the 71st minute with a first-time shot that looped over Vancouver's goalkeeper to pull the Battery within two.

In the 77th minute the Battery had another great opportunity off a set piece, but Whitecaps goalie Brad Knighton made a huge save to hold onto the 3-1 lead. Three minutes later, however, Dane Kelly continued the Battery's charge with a fantastic goal as he connected with a beautiful shot from the left side of the box, finessing his finish over Knighton and into the net.

The combination of slow play early on from the Battery and authoritative ball movement by Vancouver would be the decider in the match, however, as the Whitecaps held onto their advntage to take victory ahead of their contest on Wednesday night against the Dynamo.

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Saturday, February 16, 2013

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Orlando City’s comeback fell short Saturday night at the Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic, with the Lions dropping in the final game of group play against Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew 3-2. Down by one goal and playing with just 10 men late in the match, Orlando equalized but a late penalty kick by the Crew's Federico Higuain gave his side victory.

Columbus, who came into the match already locked for next week’s championship match, continued their top-level play with an early goal by Agustin Viana. Higuain attempted a free kick after an Orlando foul outside the 18-yard-box in the third minute, connecting with the streaking Viana to put Columbus up 1-0 early.

After the first few minutes of the match passed, the Lions settled down, keeping up with the MLS side while creating chances of their own. New signing Long Tan continued to impress, making smart runs down the pitch and showing chemistry with fellow striker and 2012 USL PRO leading scorer Dennis Chin. The defense also showed its strengths, with key plays from former Orlando City U23s defender Oumar Diakhite and goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo keeping the scoreline 1-0 to the Crew as the halftime whistle blew.

Orlando got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute, when Jamie Watson’s chipped shot slid by Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum to level the match a 1-1. Taking the correct angle on the right side of the pitch, Watson’s low roller tied the match for the Lions, giving them increased energy heading into the final 30 minutes.

Just as the momentum swung City’s way, things turned for the worse for Orlando once a second yellow was shown to midfielder James O’Connor in the 67th minute. Down a man, the Crew capitalized in the 74th minute. Columbus Defender Josh Williams elevated on a corner kick, slotting the shot home for the 2-1 lead.

The Lions refused to quit, though, equalizing on a Brian Fekete shot that bounced around the box before going in the back of the net in the 79th minute. The goal tied the match at 2-2, but the Lions were unable to hold the lead as 10 minutes later Higuain's penalty kick gave Columbus the 3-2 lead and victory.

Orlando next opponent is yet to be determined for the Pro Soccer Classic's final day next Saturday, February 23. For ticket information on next week’s Disney PSC match, visit http://bit.ly/fqNhKe. Be sure to also check back on OrlandoCitySoccer.com for next week’s opponent and time of match.

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Monday, February 18, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond Kickers officially kicked off their 2013 preseason training camp Monday at Ukrop Park, with signed players joining a group of trialists vying for remaining roster spots.

“This is very different offseason to previous years,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. “Our partnership with D.C. United will provide quality players to our squad and, unlike past seasons, we have several roster spots open. Our main focus is to identify attacking players both in the wide and central positions.”

Cowlishaw recently returned from spending eight days at D.C. United’s preseason training camp in Orlando, Fla., and he plans to implement several ideas and concepts throughout the Kickers pro and Academy programs.

“It was beneficial to observe D.C. United in preseason,” said Cowlishaw. “The clubs have similar playing philosophies and we will use D.C. United as the benchmark for our style of play and the organizational support we provide for our players. Additional emphasis on our professionalism, game preparation, attention to detail during our technical phase and utilizing staff members to oversee strength and conditioning, functional training, and injury prevention.”

The Kickers' six-week long training camp will feature a selection of scrimmages, including high profile match-ups against NCAA Finalists Georgetown University and the Carolina RailHawks. First up, the Kickers play host to George Mason University this Friday, February 22 at 7 p.m.

“It is very early and we only have a handful of signed players in town,: said Cowlishaw. “The good news is we are way ahead of last season in terms of quality and our overall commitment to producing a winning season. We will see a combination of signed players, trialists and potentially a couple of our Academy players compete against George Mason on Friday.”

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Monday, February 18, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando City SC announced on Monday that Brazilian native Flávio Augusto da Silva has made a significant investment and future commitment to the Orlando City franchise. The investment will be used for the club’s share of a private/publicly funded multi-purpose soccer stadium in downtown Orlando and future acquisition of an MLS franchise.

“Every year, hundreds of thousands of Brazilians visit Orlando,” said da Silva. “It's our number one destination in the US and us Brazilians, besides being famous for our friendliness and willingness to buy at the outlets and malls; we are also a nation that loves soccer. More than that, we are a country of 200 million fanatics for soccer. It is a great honor that I now become a part of this vibrant soccer club, Orlando City, which is being built with boldness to make history in this country and will give much pride to this City.”

Until last week, da Silva chaired the Ometz Group, with 16 holding companies, including the country’s leading English language schools for adults, Wise Up, a FIFA World Cup Sponsor. On February 7th, the Ometz Group was acquired by Abril Educação, one of Brazil’s largest media companies. Today, Mr. da Silva still leads the Wise Up Group and is also the third largest shareholder in Abril Educação. As part of the acquisition, Mr. da Silva will oversee the development of Abril Educação operations around the world.

He also owns the Canal Geração de Valor “Value Generation”, where he shares entrepreneurial experience and advice; he has more than 304,000 followers on twitter and 670,000 on Facebook.

The new owner gives Orlando a major advantage in its drive to be named the next MLS expansion franchise. To secure a move up to the major leagues, MLS requires clubs to have, among other things, a fiscally stable and established ownership group and a stadium seating between 18,000 and 25,000. The Citrus Bowl and its upcoming redevelopment does not meet these needs, therefore, the club is on record stating that a 18,500 seat downtown stadium is their goal. The Lions recently presented an independent economic impact study to local press and political leaders which demonstrated that the stadium and MLS franchise would create a $1.3 billion impact for the region over the next 30-years.

Florida Governor Rick Scott came out in favor of Orlando’s MLS bid last week, saying “I am very supportive and will do everything I can do at the state level.”

MLS Commissioner Don Garber visited Orlando in March of 2012, leaving the town after meeting with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and County Mayor Teresa Jacobs. Impressed by the support from Lion fans at a town-hall style meeting, Garber said “It’s not a matter of if, but a case of when” in regards to a franchise in Central Florida. The club has been in close communication with Garber and the MLS for over two years now.

Mr. da Silva’s investment gives Orlando’s MLS bid a unique advantage, immediately gaining ties to one of the biggest soccer countries in the world, Brazil. More announcements will be made on specifics regarding the ties to Brazil in the upcoming weeks.

The existing ownership group, which includes President Phil Rawlins, will remain in place and continue to run day-to-day operations at Orlando City. Flavio Augusto joins Orlando’s current local ownership group, which includes amongst others, entrepreneur John Bonner and Morgan & Morgan’s Scott Bates.

USL News Release

Monday, February 18, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues is saddened to hear of the death of Ocala Stampede player Richmond McCarthy, who passed away suddenly this past weekend.

McCarthy, who also played for Harlem FC in the Super-20 League, had a strong rookie season in the Stampede’s first season in the PDL, recording five assists in 15 appearances as the club won the Southeast Division.

“We were all shocked by the news of Richmond passing away so suddenly,” Stampede owner Bill Reed said in a club statement. “We started the Stampede to make a difference and touch people’s lives. Today we learned how much Richmond touched each of us. For some of us there were times of frustration with Richmond and he with us, as any team and family goes through. But the love and maturity displayed by this team showed that even through tough times God’s love heals all.”

The Stampede have announced that McCarthy’s No.5 jersey will be retired in his honor. All those at USL send our condolences to McCarthy’s family, friends and teammates with the Stampede at this difficult time.

“Our thoughts are with Richmond’s family and friends, and all of the members of the Ocala Stampede family,” USL President Tim Holt said. “It is always a tragedy when one so young is taken from us, we hope the memories of Richmond’s life will endure among those who knew him best.”

Central Jersey Spartans News Release -- www.cjspartans.com

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Central Jersey Spartans are pleased to announce the appointment of former Northern Ireland international James Quinn as the club's new head coach. Quinn made 50 appearances for Northern Ireland, and also played professionally for Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday.

While English-born, Quinn scored four goals in his international career for Northern Ireland. He began his professional career with Birmingham City before being sold to Blackpool for £25,000 in 1994. He scored a total of 47 goals and made 151 first-team starts over five years for the Seasiders, which propelled him into the Northern Ireland squad. Quinn scored his first goal for his country against Belgium in a 3-0 win in 1997.

These exploits led West Bromwich Albion to sign Quinn for £500,000. From 1998 to 2001, Quinn made over 123 appearances in all competitions for West Bromwich Albion. During 2001-02, Quinn’s final season with the club, James was loaned out to Notts County and Bristol Rovers, before joining Dutch side Willem II in the summer of 2002.

Quinn made 62 appearances for Willem II before his return to England in January 2005, when he became Paul Sturrock’s first permanent signing for Sheffield Wednesday. He then went on to play for Peterborough United, Bristol City and Northampton Town in the final years of his career.

Quinn retired from playing soccer in 2007 and decided to concentrate on passing his knowledge and experience onto youth players through coaching. In the summer of 2010, James undertook and passed the prestigious UEFA ’A’ License. James then, in 2011, achieved the highest level coaching license in the world when he completed and passes the UEFA Pro License.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are pleased to announce the re-signing of Hunter Gilstrap for their inaugural season at Highmark Stadium, pending USL and USSF approval. A star goalkeeper for the Riverhounds over the past three years, Gilstrap has signed a two-year contract with the club that will see him anchor the defense for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

“I’m thrilled that we are able to obtain Hunter’s services on and off the field for the next two years. Undoubtedly, Hunter has been one of the best goalkeepers in the USL throughout his career,” said Head Coach Justin Evans. “I’m most proud of his growth off the field within the Pittsburgh soccer community, and the community as a whole. In my opinion Hunter has been, and will continue to be, a huge asset to this organization.”

Since coming to Pittsburgh in 2010, Gilstrap has played a key role in the success of the Riverhounds' organization. Gilstrap helped lead the Riverhounds to consecutive postseason berths for the first time in club history in 2010 and 2011, while being recognized as the USL Second Division Goalkeeper of the Year in his debut season.

According to the 6-foot-3 goalkeeper from Lexington, S.C., the decision to extend his time in Pittsburgh came easily.

“I couldn't be happier to be staying with the 'Hounds. I feel incredibly humbled and blessed to be extended this opportunity," Gilstrap said. "This organization has been great to me since I showed up here almost three years ago. With all the exciting things going on, especially having a brand new stadium to play in, deciding to stay was a no-brainer for me.”

Along with representing the First Team on the field, Gilstrap has been instrumental in establishing a goalkeeper-specific training program within The Riverhounds Academy. Gilstrap has designed, implemented, and continually enhanced a curriculum for goalkeepers from the ages of 10 to 18, improving the technical skillsets and tactical components needed for elite goalkeepers.

“Another great thing about this club is how they have supported our efforts to develop a youth goalkeeper academy as part of The Riverhounds Academy,” said Gilstrap. “We have worked hard over the past three years to establish The Riverhounds GK Academy from basically nothing. Current Riverhounds backup GK Greg Blum and former 'Hounds GK Derek Yobbi have been instrumental in helping create a curriculum for our keepers that's helping them to get better every time they show up. We started with around 10 GK's in 2010 and we are close to 60 now, and we plan to keep going. It's very exciting!”

Along with Pittsburgh Riverhounds GK Coach, Jeroen Walstra, Gilstrap has elevated his status, locally, as a go-to trainer for the area’s elite goalkeepers. Serving as an assistant men’s coach for the University of Pittsburgh and contracted by the PA West Soccer Association for various goalkeeper needs, Gilstrap has embodied the first-class approach to youth development that has characterized The Riverhounds Academy since its inception in 2007.

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

DENVER - The Colorado Rapids Women’s Super-20 League team achieved an unexpected triumph this past July when it won the 2012 North American Championship in Bradenton, Florida. For the 2013 season, Rapids Women Head Coach Daniel Clitnovici will call up and promote seven of the 2012 championship-winning Super-20 players to the W-League team: Anna Evans, Karisa Price, Hannah Clark, Therese Hagbyhn, Hannah Levett, Layla Ashouri, and Abby Phillips.

"Moving up to the Rapids first team will be a great challenge and opportunity for me," Evans said. "I have nothing to lose and I'm looking forward to improving my game in a summer of high-quality, high-class soccer. There are high hopes for a successful season."

Clitnovici also expressed his excitement about the potential these young players can offer.

"It was a tough call on how many players to bring up to the W-League team as we had such a great group of girls in that U20 squad, but I feel the ones I have called up for this upcoming season are ready for this step and they should do well for us," he said. "They have all had another positive college season under their belt and I’m really happy to watch them continue to grow and develop."

The seven athletes all had very successful seasons for their respective college teams. Hagbyhn, a defender, followed up winning the Super-20 League Championship with the Rapids by winning the 2012 NAIA National Championship with her school, Lindsey Wilson College. Hagbyhn, a starter in the Lindsey Wilson defense, scored a goal and registered one assist this past season.

Ashouri competes for the University of Nebraska-Omaha and featured in all 18 of her school's games as a freshman. Ashouri can play in the midfield or up front and registered one assist for the Mavericks. Price, a forward, plays her soccer at Metro State University in Denver where she was named All-RMAC first team and led her team with 16 goals. Price also registered three assists during the 2012 season.

Clark, a goalkeeper, is another promising young player. As a freshman at Iowa State, Clark played in 21 matches and made 55 saves, ranking third in the Big Ten in save percentage. Phillips can play as a striker or in the midfield and plays her soccer for the University of Alabama-Birmingham. She played in 14 games and scored a goal for UAB and this past season.

Evans is a forward for the Colorado School of Mines and was named Player of the Year in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after leading her team in scoring with 17 goals. Levett can also play as a forward or center-mid and managed eight goals and seven assists this fall for UCCS. She was named to the all-RMAC second team.

The Colorado Rapids are hoping these young ladies, combined with some experienced returnees from 2012 and a few new faces, will be a recipe for a successful 2013 season in the W-League.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A late goal by Alex grabbed victory for the Chicago Fire, and sent the Charleston Battery to an unfortunate 2-1 defeat on Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium as the Fire assumed top spot in the race for the 2013 Carolina Challenge Cup. Alex’s goal from just outside the penalty area in second-half stoppage time to give his side victory, and deny the Battery a draw.

While Chicago pressed early, and had a clear size advantage over the Battery, it was Charleston that landed the first blow in the 11th minute as 2012 USL PRO Rookie of the Year Jose Cuevas received a nice through-ball from Nicki Paterson and finished it with ease to beat Chicago goalkeeper, Paolo Tornaghi, putting the defending USL PRO champions ahead.

The Fire kept attacking with numbers, however, and after a couple of missed opportunities they got the equalizer in the 27th minute. Off a corner, 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year Austin Berry headed a ball from Joel Lindpere into the lower-right side of the net, just out of reach of Charleston goalkeeper Kevin Klasila.

The game remained level going into halftime after the Battery saw a chance missed by Dane Kelly in the 29th minute and Chicago’s Dilly Duke sen a blast off the left post with seven minute to go. Paterson had the final chance before the break, only to send a Battery free kick just wide of the net in the final minute.

Chicago brought a noticeable difference in their pace to start the second half, and created chance to go with it. The Fire’s pressure almost told in the 85th minute when a short corner came close to finding the go-ahead goal, but the Battery held on to keep it tied as the clock moved into stoppage time.

The Fire had the last laugh, though, as Alex blasted an absolute rocket into the right side-netting in the 92nd minute to secure the game winner and lift Chicago into first place in the tournament standings with their second victory.

HOUSTON 2, VANCOUVER 1: After falling in their opening game of the Carolina Challenge Cup, the Houston Dynamo entered their game with with the Vancouver Whitecaps looking for their first win of the tournament. Thanks to late goals by Will Bruin and Adam Moffat, they were able to, as the Dynamo took victory against the Whitecaps in the night’s opening game.

Vancouver started the scoring off in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a defensive mistake as Corey Hertzog was able to steal in following a weak ball back to the goalkeeper by the Dynamo. Hertzog rounded the corner and snuck it past Tally Hall, giving the former Wilmington Hammerheads goalkeeper his second goal of the preseason.

Houston got a boost off the bench as Bruin tied the game moments after coming on, the U.S. National Team forward finishing off a nice through-ball by fellow substitute Brad Davis in the 75th minute. The Dynamo quickly struck again with a pellet by Moffat from distance to beat Brad Knighton into the top right corner just two minutes later.

Houston held on in the final minutes to secure a 2-1 victory over Vancouver and now holds sole possession of second place in the tournament behind Chicago. Vancouver will be a close third going into Saturday’s games with the Charleston Battery sitting in fourth position.

Next Generation Series News Release

Thursday, February 21, 2012

TAMPA, Fla.
- United Soccer Leagues announced today the acceptance of Georgia Rush, an affiliate of the largest youth soccer club in the world, into the Next Generation Series (NGS). The joint venture between USL and IMG Academy features a forward-looking, innovative, comprehensive, and unique program designed to develop the complete elite youth soccer player through a defined regimen of training, competition, testing, and evaluation.

As an affiliate of Rush Soccer, which covers 26 states and 10 countries, Georgia Rush is regarded as the leader in player development in Georgia and aims to be one of the best soccer clubs in the nation.

“I believe that if the [U.S.] is going to compete on the world stage in the next 10 years then its focus cannot be on the U16 and U18 age groups, it needs to be on the younger players,” Georgia Rush Technical Director Russell Finch said. “Other leagues are focusing on initiating elite development leagues for 15, 16, 17 year olds when in Europe and South America they are signing professional contracts at this age.  USL obviously understands the importance and has taken the initiative to implement NGS and its programs to ultimately educate and engrain good habits at an earlier age so that the final product is a complete one.”

The Next Gen approach to total player development is the also the foundation upon which Georgia Rush was built. The Rush focus is to develop all 11 players on the field as soccer players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet, including the keeper. The 11 Rush Core Values prepare teams and players for the next level and the Next Gen Series will get them there even sooner.

The Next Gen Series is an exciting, new youth soccer initiative established to provide players, coaches and clubs the opportunity to take part in an the first elite-level league totally devoted to player development.

"We believe NGS is a perfect fit for us,” continued Finch. “I am excited that NGS focuses on complete player development, unlike so many of the other leagues in place.  It is going to further educate our players on the nutritional and mental toughness part of the game as well as evaluating them as athletes in an incredibly professional environment such as IMG.”

The 2013 Next Gen Series format will consist of U12 and U14 boys and girls teams participating in an eight-month season beginning in August and culminating in April that will feature two evaluation/competition events at IMG. More than just another youth soccer league, top players will be identified through the NGS Player Tracking Program and invited to attend the NGS ID Training Camp at IMG presenting the unique opportunity for these elite soccer players to showcase their talents and train with distinguished IMG and NGS coaches.

The inspiration for the Next Gen Series was the repeated and consistent message received from top youth soccer clubs and coaches that they were seeking a fresh development initiative specifically geared toward younger teams and players. NGS was launched to fill the void by providing a comprehensive platform for clubs to best prepare their young players for the challenges which await them at the next level.

“The Next Gen Series is going to have a great impact on player development,” former Major League Soccer player and NGS Director Abe Thompson said. “Georgia Rush is a premier club dedicated to developing players the right way. We share the same values and are excited to see the club, using the NGS platform, turn out elite players that will be the future of soccer in this country.”

The world’s largest and most advanced multi-sport training and education complex, IMG Academy hosted myriad soccer team training camps in 2012, including clubs such as the Seattle Sounders, D.C. United, Columbus Crew, Sweden’s Malmö FF, as well as the U.S. Women’s National Team preparing for the London Olympic Games and the Antigua & Barbuda Men’s National Team preparing for World Cup qualifying.

Rochester Rhinos News Release -- www.rhinossoccer.com

Thursday, February 21, 2013

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rochester Rhinos have agreed to terms with striker Blake Brettschneider for the 2013 USL PRO season pending USL and USSF approval. Brettschneider, a 6-foot, 23-year-old who will turn 24 before the start of the season, appeared in 32 matches and made 19 starts over the past two seasons with D.C. United and the New England Revolution. He has the second most career appearances in Major League Soccer on the Rhinos' current roster. Rhinos captain Troy Roberts played 61 times with the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2005 to 2008.

“Blake is a player with a huge amount of MLS experience who has played at the highest level in this country.” Rhinos head coach Jesse Myers said. “He’s an athletic forward who has a nose for the goal. I’ve had the chance to talk to our MLS affiliate, the New England Revolution, about him as well as some other teams in Major League Soccer. The unanimous opinion is that he’s going to be a star player in our league.”

Brettschneider played with the Rhinos' Major League Soccer affiliate, the New England Revolution, last season after signing with the club as a free agent on March 6th, 2012. He made 17 appearances and logged 893 minutes with two goals and one assist.

Brettschneider was drafted with the third pick in the second round of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft by D.C. United. He was signed to a contract by United after he scored three goals in only 25 minutes on the pitch during the 2011 preseason. Brettschneider scored his first professional goal on June 11th against the San Jose Earthquakes. He finished the year with one goal and one assist in 15 appearances.

“Last season we had a pair of strikers from MLS rediscover their form in USL PRO," Myers said. "Corey Hertzog was loaned to Wilmington by the Red Bulls, and he scored 10 goals. Bright Dike was loaned to the LA Blues by Portland, and he scored six goals in seven matches. Dike returned to Portland last season and scored five MLS goals in 12 matches, while Hertzog signed with Vancouver for the 2013 season. Blake is in Rochester looking to find a similar path back to MLS, and I have every expectation that he will.”

Brettschneider was a standout collegiate player with the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. He scored four goals and added four assists as a freshmen, and he was invited into the United States Men’s National Team U-20 camp during the spring semester of his freshmen year. As a sophomore he was named First Team All-Conference USA with six goals and two assists.

Brettschneider concluded his collegiate career with his best all-around season in 2010. He scored seven goals and added 10 assists on his way to being named the Conference USA co-Offensive Player of the Year, and Conference USA co-Most Valuable Player. He finished his collegiate career with 19 goals and 17 assists.

Brettschneider joins Matt Luzunaris as the second high-profile striker to sign with the Rhinos during the off-season. Luzunaris scored nine goals in under 900 minutes with Orlando City last season.

“Last year we struggled to score goals. In fact we were probably mid-table in goals scored in the USL PRO.” Myers said. “We just lacked the players to consistently get in behind the other team and stretch our opponents out. These two new signings along with the return of Kendell McFayden should solve that problem in 2013. We’re going to be scoring goals in Sahlen’s Stadium this summer.”

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Friday, February 22, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando City SC closes out the 2013 Disney Pro Soccer Classic on Saturday, February 23, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. In a prelude to the two game series “I-4 Derby”, Saturday marks the first time the cross-state clubs have ever met in the two’s history.

“It’s an interesting game to see for all the local people,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath. “They’ve had a couple difficult games, as we have, so we’ll see. I look forward to all games and look forward to this one.”

The Lions have remained competitive in each of the three matches in the 2013 Disney PSC, including a near-comeback victory against the Columbus Crew Saturday night. Orlando trialists Keammar Daley, Jonathan Mendoza, Brian Fekete and others will continue to look for ways to impress as the preseason continues on.

Tampa Bay has had a tough time producing results in this year’s classic, losing all three games by a goal differential of -8. The Rowdies, however, have only been in preseason camp for a few weeks much like the Lions, improving as each day goes by.

The two sides will again meet on March 9, the home leg of the “I-4 Derby” for Orlando. That match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at the Florida Citrus Bowl. The second leg will be on March 30 at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla. For more information on the match this Saturday and the “I-4 Derby”, visit OrlandoCitySoccer.com.

Super Y-League News Release

Thursday, February 21, 2013

BRADENTON, Fla. - The 2013 Super Y-League Boys ODP National Camp kicked off Thursday at IMG Academy with 165 of the top players from throughout North America reporting for the first day of the four-day camp. Under the direction of USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor, the camp features an impressive lineup of coaches including University of Portland Director of Soccer Bill Irwin, former MLS star Raul Diaz Arce, former Penn State Head Coach Barry Gorman, and longtime MLS keeper Kevin Hartman.

Thursday's kickoff session started with an introductory talk from Mellor and Super Y-League & ODP Director Natalie Akula, followed by testing and the first training sessions with the players divided into U13/14 and U15/16 age groups. Mellor and IMG's Scott Bowers worked with the goalkeepers while the other coaches had an opportunity to train their teams for the first time.

"This is really just an opportunity to identify some of the talents of the kids and really try to get them comfortable with each other," said Hartman, the all-time MLS leader in clean sheets. "We're also trying to identify some of their strengths and weaknesses, so it's been good to get the kids out here and see where they are from a physical perspective."

Each team was run through performance testing by IMG Academy staff, with players participating in the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump and the dreaded beep test. The latter left many gasping for air on the ground, while also showing the coaches who showed up in top physical condition.

Hartman said the coaches have already begun the process of trying to identify the standouts who will have an opportunity to be part of the camp select teams.

"For me it's about understanding the game and knowing when you need to beat somebody rather than trying to beat people all the time," he said. "That being said, you don't want to take that creativity and that agressiveness out of a player at this age. [I'm looking for] a good understanding of the game, opening up, giving good options early, good technically with the ball, and a good understanding of how they can assist their teammates and be a good team player."

Friday's session kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with team training, followed by a nutrition session, afternoon games and evening mental conditioning.
