Michigan Bucks News Release -- www.buckssoccer.com

Friday, February 1, 2013

PONTIAC, Mich. -- Four former Michigan Bucks players signed with Major League Soccer or heard their name called at the recent MLS SuperDraft and Supplemental Draft. Heading the list were former University of Akron first team All Americans Chad Barson and Scott Caldwell, who were both signed to MLS homegrown contracts.

Caldwell also starred for the Bucks for three seasons after being a part of the New England Revolution youth initiative while growing up in suburban Braintree, Massachusetts. Barson, a native of Lewis Center, Ohio played three seasons for the Bucks after growing up in the Columbus Crew youth academy system.  Both Barson and Caldwell signed contracts and joined their respective MLS clubs earlier this month.

University of Michigan center back Kofi Opare (Niagara Falls, Ontario) was selected in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft with the 24th overall pick by the current MLS champion the LA Galaxy. Opare also spent portions of the last three seasons with the Bucks alongside Barson and Caldwell. The Bucks finished the 2012 season as the PDL Regular Season Champions and made it to the Elite Eight final in each of those three seasons. Opare's selection kept the Bucks PDL record streak of having a player selected in the MLS Super Draft for 15 consecutive seasons, dating back to the team's first selection (Jeremy Aldrich to Miami Fusion) in 1999.

Rochester Hills native, Dan Withrow was selected in Tuesday's Supplemental Draft with the 28th overall pick by the Columbus Crew. The goalkeeper from Marshall University was a back-up to PDL Goal Keeper of the Year Mitch Hildebrandt for the Bucks in 2011, but did see action in three matches, allowing no goals on the season.

The Michigan Bucks have now sent 49 players to Major League Soccer since 1999, including several standouts including Zarek Valentin (Montreal Impact), Kofi Sarkodie (Houston Dynamo), Jacob Peterson (Sporting KC) and Pat Noonan, who just retired from the LA Galaxy to take a role as assistant coach to Bruce Arena for this upcoming season.

The Bucks open their 14-game regular season PDL schedule on Friday, May 18th on the road at the Chicago Inferno and open their home schedule with their sixth annual trip to the Canton Cup, where they will play the River City Rovers at Independence Park in Canton as the highlight of the Canton Cup Memorial Day Youth Soccer Tournament on Saturday, May 26 (12 p.m. kickoff).

The only open tryout for this year's spring season will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 2-4 p.m. at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac. Tryouts are open to the general public. All details and registration information will be up on the Bucks web site within two weeks.

BUCKS TO HOST CHALLENGE CUP

Mark you calendars for the three upcoming Michigan Bucks spring events that have become some of the most popular soccer events of the season. Tickets to the event will allow all fans to see three great games featuring University of Michigan vs Notre Dame, Oakland University vs. Notre Dame and Oakland University vs. the Michigan Bucks.

On Saturday, April 6 the Bucks will host the College Tripleheader that will allow all fans to see three college games (men and women) for one price between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Ultimate Soccer Arenas.

These three games will feature Michigan vs Michigan State (men), Oakland University vs Michigan State (women) and Oakland University vs. Bowling Green (men). Tickets and registration for all three events will be finalized within the next week.

Aztex Take Spotlight At SuperDraft

Austin Aztex Feature -- www.austinaztex.com

Friday, February 1, 2013

AUSTIN, Texas -- Major League Soccer coaches and executives from around the United States and Canada are huddled at their tables, trying to play their cards right to land the players they covet. One-by-one, the top three players’ names are called to the podium and their names are projected onto a large wall with their respective college teams.

The 2013 MLS SuperDraft is underway. Almost immediately, there is a delay as the Vancouver Whitecaps decide to make a trade to move up six spots to grab the fourth pick. With the pick, a team name is projected on a large screen next to the player’s name on the fourth slot.

“Kekuta Manneh, Austin Aztex”

What happened over the next half hour is not quickly evident among those in the draft room. However, as Blake Smith was called at 8th and Dillon Powers was called at 11th in the SuperDraft, the Austin Aztex of the USL PDL have already delivered their message.

Three of the top 11 picks of the draft were members of the 2012 Austin Aztex squad.

“A primary purpose of the Aztex is to develop players for the next level,” said Aztex Director of Operations Ric Granryd. “To have three players drafted in the top 11, who have represented our club in our first year, is an extraordinary privilege.”

Manneh, the 18-year-old Lake Travis High School student, was chosen by the Vancouver Whitecaps with the fourth overall pick. Manneh stood out last year as a 17-year-old forward who scored 10 goals in the regular season before adding two more in the playoffs for the Aztex. Manneh was the youngest player in the draft pool and the first forward selected in the draft.

“Manneh is one of those players that has everything that you cannot teach,” Aztex Head Coach Paul Dalglish said. “He’s got unbelievable pace; he’s an incredible finisher; he has great touch; and he’s two-footed. I think Manneh has still got work to do on his movement. If he can continue to improve the way the Aztex saw him improve, I honestly believe he can be the best player to come out of the draft. I have never worked with anybody, since being in this country, that has the composure, pace, and finishing ability.”

Smith was chosen by the Montreal Impact with the eighth overall pick. Upon joining the Aztex, he immediately added an extra scoring threat to Dalglish’s attacking system. The dangerous forward scored in the top five of every skill test during the 2013 MLS Combine.

“I would think it would be very difficult to find a better pure winger than Blake,” Dalglish said. “The fact that he is left-footed is a massive bonus. He’s unbelievably quick, has great delivery from the wide area, and can finish. He can play as an orthodox winger on the left side, or he can play as an inverted winger on the right hand side.”

Smith said his time with the Aztex helped him gain a lot through building meaningful relationships with the other players and Dalglish. While he is excited to continue his career in Montreal, he acknowledged that it will be a huge adjustment and that he may need to brush up on his French.

“I am excited for the journey ahead and hope to earn myself a spot on the field,” Smith said. ”I am looking forward to it.”

Powers, a central midfielder, was chosen by the Colorado Rapids with the 11th overall pick. In two games for the Austin Aztex in 2012, Powers led a dominant midfield and helped the Aztex outscore their opponents 13 to 1.

“Listening to some of the knocks on Powers in the combine was he wasn’t that mobile,” Dalglish explained. “Maybe that is something he needs to work on, but he is much quicker than everyone else mentally. Sometimes you don’t have to be too quick, too mobile, if you can think faster than everyone else. He’s so strong. He knows how to control the game, always wants the ball, can switch the play, and he can play short passes. Powers is just a great midfielder that can help you build attacks from the back.”

“I think the direction we had under Paul [Dalglish] will be the biggest takeaway,” Powers said. “He runs the program very professionally, and I think I can take things away from that on and off the field."

Having Kekuta Manneh, Blake Smith, and Dillon Powers on MLS rosters is evidence that Head Coach Paul Dalglish and the rest of the staff are committed to attracting soccer talent that can develop and make names for themselves on the professional level. With the addition of Zach Garcia, who joined the San Antonio Scorpions toward the end of the 2012 season, the Aztex have a steadily growing number of players who have already graduated to the professional ranks.

The Aztex are committed to bringing high level soccer back to Austin while acting as a resource to the local soccer community. This became evident as the SuperDraft began to draw to a close. While many players that were chosen previously played in the PDL, only one PDL franchise was recognized on the large screen among the colleges from where the next level of MLS players originated:

Next Generation Series News Release

Friday, February 1, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. -
United Soccer Leagues announced today the acceptance of Knoxville Soccer Academy into the Next Generation Series (NGS), the joint venture between USL and IMG Academy featuring a forward-looking, innovative, comprehensive, and unique development program designed to develop the complete elite youth soccer player through a defined regimen of training, competition, testing, and evaluation.

Knoxville Soccer Academy was founded on the premise that players train and develop in a holistic environment focused on individual player development. With the club joining the Next Gen Series, players will have the opportunity to train at the elite level during early stages of their careers.

"NGS presents us with the opportunity to further develop our programs by tapping into other top level soccer developers in the [United States]," Knoxville Soccer Academy’s Director of Coaching Derek Broadley said. "NGS has recruited some excellent people whose purpose is to enable players to develop to their full potential regardless of where they live in the [United States], by offering the sharing of ideas and skills supported by great venues and state of the art facilities.”

In Knoxville, coaches teach the “four cornerstones of development” for each individual player: technical and tactical development, physical development, social development and psychological development. While this concept of total player development is typically reserved for older players, the Next Gen Series aims to build from a young age.

"The principles that Knoxville Soccer Academy was founded on fit perfectly with the Next Generation Series model," NGS Director and former Major League Soccer player Abe Thompson said. "Knoxville Soccer Academy is already one of the nation’s premier clubs led by a group of extremely talented coaches, and the Next Generation Series will help elevate the club to new heights. We couldn’t be more thrilled to begin working with Knoxville Soccer Academy."

The Next Gen Series is an exciting, new youth soccer initiative established to provide players, coaches and clubs the opportunity to take part in an the first elite-level league totally devoted to player development.

The 2013 Next Gen Series format will consist of U12 and U14 boys and girls teams participating in an eight-month season beginning in August and culminating in April that will feature two evaluation/competition events at IMG. More than just another youth soccer league, top players will be identified through the NGS Player Tracking Program and invited to attend the NGS ID Training Camp at IMG presenting the unique opportunity for these elite soccer players to showcase their talents and train with distinguished IMG and NGS coaches.

"We are experts in the overall development of the soccer player and will play a key role in making the players better, educating the parents and bringing in the coaching education component as well," Director of Soccer at IMG Academy Scott Dean said.

The inspiration for the Next Gen Series was the repeated and consistent message received from top youth soccer clubs and coaches that they were seeking a fresh development initiative specifically geared toward younger teams and players. NGS was launched to fill the void by providing a comprehensive platform for clubs to best prepare their young players for the challenges which await them at the next level.

The Knoxville Soccer Academy will focus on producing players who have the ability to perform consistently at all levels of the game by establishing a proven curriculum that has been tested at the highest levels of English soccer.

"NGS completes the puzzle for KSA by giving us the ability to be part of a development system that has a games program that really supports player development based on best practices from other developed soccer nations," Broadley said. "Players will train more and play less competitive matches. There will be a focus on the ’whole player’ not just technical physical and tactical development."

The world’s largest and most advanced multi-sport training and education complex, IMG Academy hosted myriad soccer team training camps in 2012, including clubs such as the Seattle Sounders, D.C. United, Columbus Crew, Sweden’s Malmö FF, as well as the U.S. Women’s National Team preparing for the London Olympic Games and the Antigua & Barbuda Men’s National Team preparing for World Cup qualifying.

FC Tucson News Release -- www.fctucson.com

Saturday, February 2, 2013

TUCSON, Ariz. — It’s not the first time Donny Toia has worn an MLS kit, but when he trotted on to the pitch at Kino North Field 5 with the San Jose Earthquakes, it was the first time Toia played for an MLS squad since he was cut from Real Salt Lake early in 2012.

“It’s exciting, it’s fun,” said Toia following the Earthquakes’ 1-0 loss to Colorado. “Its always an adrenaline rush. It just feels good to be out in the field, honestly.”

Toia came into the match as a halftime sub and played the full 45 minutes of the second half. He did get a shot off, but just missed over the crossbar. It was the only stat Toia contributed to the final match sheet, but throughout the match Toia looked comfortable and rarely found himself out of place.

The fact he didn’t collapse after 20 minutes is impressive. Toia hadn’t played in a single soccer match since the final game of FC Tucson’s PDL season, a 2-1 loss to Sounders U23s on July 21.

“It was a little tiring but that’s just trying to get back in shape again,” Toia said. “I’m not as fit as I used to be but I’m working on it.”

There is no guarantee about Toia’s future. Even in the best-case scenario, Toia would travel with San Jose back to their home base for more training. His future with the team, positive or negative, may not be known for another couple of weeks.

But for now Toia is happy to be back on the field and excited to do it in front of a hometown that has watched him grow from a local club legend, to a high school star to a PDL franchise face.

“It’s always a great feeling [playing in Tucson],” Toia said. “When you see a bunch of people going out and calling your name, it’s even better."

VSI Tampa Bay FC News Release -- www.vsi-fc.com

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. -- VSI Tampa Bay FC is pleased to announce the signing of Karamba Janneh, Shawn Chin and Jamie McGuinness for the club’s 2013 inaugural season in USL PRO, pending USSF approval.

Fresh off the back of an outstanding season with Ocala Stampede of the PDL, Janneh was one of the standout players for the PDL Southeast Division Champions.

"Having played for me with the Stampede this past summer, Janneh is a lad that we immediately targeted to bring to Tampa,” said Head Coach Matt Weston. “Karamba caused havoc with his pace and movement upfront and is a player who has so much raw talent."

The Gambian-born Janneh was named to the PDL's All-Southern Conference team this past summer and ended the season with nine goals in 15 games. With lightening pace and an eye for goal, Janneh signs his first professional contract for VSI Tampa Bay FC after a collegiate career plundering goals in junior college at Monroe & Otero.

Miami native, Shawn Chin, joins VSI having played professionally for FC Edmonton and the Minnesota Stars. Chin developed a reputation as a crafty midfielder both in his professional career and his collegiate one spending time in both the Big East and the ACC. After earning All-ACC Freshman honors for Boston College in 2007, he transferred to the University of South Florida for his junior season. There, Chin had five goals and an assist in his senior year, while also playing in friendlies for the United States U20 National team, and he then easily transitioned into professional soccer.

"Shawn is an intelligent soccer player" Weston said. "He plays in off the line as a wide midfielder which I like and gets into dangerous positions with his game awareness and soccer IQ. He is technical, makes great decisions on and off the ball and shows the composure and confidence which are needed to play at this level and in my system."

The final player of the trio comes with the addition of Jamie McGuinness. McGuinness journeyed from Watford, England to join VSI Tampa Bay FC. After playing PDL for the VSI Flames in 2012, McGuinness effortlessly transitioned over to the VSI Tampa Bay FC pro side.

McGuinness scored the first goal in team history for the VSI Tampa Flames last year in the 2012 PDL season and looks to make an impact in the club's inaugural season in USL PRO as well. McGuinness’ strong background includes time as a captain of the NIKE Football Academy, and stints with Rushdon & Diamonds FC and Luton Town FC.

"Jamie is a player who has shown great commitment and dedication to his craft and deserves this opportunity to become a pro," said Weston. ‘’I am looking forward to his development as a player with the pro side here at VSI and hope it gives encouragement to all of the PDL lads that if your good enough you will get your chance.’’

The USL PRO schedule is out and tickets will be available soon for all VSI Tampa Bay FC home games at www.vsi-fc.com.

PDL Feature

Monday, February 4, 2013

Seven former PDL standouts, and other alumni from the USL pyramid, were announced in the U.S. Men’s National Team squad that will face Honduras on Wednesday in the opening game of the final stage of World Cup Qualifying.

All three goalkeepers named to the squad have USL ties, with current starter Tim Howard having begun his career with the North Jersey Imperials in the USL D3 Pro League, making 16 appearances in his rookie professional season. Backup goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Sean Johnson are both alumni of the PDL, with Guzan having played for the Chicago Fire PDL, recording a 0.388 goals-against average and eight shutouts in 13 starts in 2004 to claim PDL All-League honors.

Stoke City’s Geoff Cameron leads the defensive group, with the former midfielder having made 33 appearances for the Rhode Island Stingrays between 2005 and 2007. Cameron had four goals and an assist in the 2006 campaign, while appearing in all 16 matches.

Cameron is joined by former Orange County Blue Star standout Brad Evans, who appeared in 14 games for the Blue Star, and Michael Parkhurst, who played 10 games for IMG Academy Bradenton in 2003. Also included in the group is Michael Besler, who previously appeared in exhibition contests for the Kansas City Brass, but not in an official PDL contest.

The midfield is highlighted by the recall of former Ventura County Fusion standout Sacha Kljestan, now starring for Anderlecht in Belgium. Kljestan had a goal and an assist in his brief spell with Orange County, playing on the same side as Evans, Robbie Rogers and Kei Kamara, who earned All-Western Conference Honors with 12 goals in 14 games that season.

Sporting Kansas City’s Graham Zusi was also selected, with the former Central Florida Kraze standout building off a strong 2012 in MLS that saw him named to the league’s Bext XI. Zusi made 10 appearances for the Kraze in 2005, helping his side reach the PDL playoffs.

Former Seattle Sounders forward Herculez Gomez is part of a four-man attacking group, with the current standout for Santos Laguna in Mexico looking to add to his tally of two World Cup Qualifying goals in San Pedro Sula. Former Super Y-League ODP selection Jozy Altidore is also included, with the strong forward currently having an outstanding season for AZ in the Netherlands.

Wednesday afternoon’s game can be seen on BeIN Sport at 4 p.m. ET as Jurgen Klinsmann’s side looks to take a positive first step toward the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

USL News Release

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – In the first of several camps designed to benefit youth soccer, the Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association will host a soccer clinic, presented by the National Guard, February 23-24 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Thanks to the USL-National Guard partnership, USL youth clubs will host a series of camps throughout the U.S. in the coming months.

The FASA clinic is for high school-aged boys and girls and is free to all 76 players who will be in attendance. The clinic will be managed by professional trainers that will include a combination of college coaches, USSF-licensed coaches and college players, and is designed to introduce, sharpen, and challenge every player, help prepare them for their upcoming season, and take them to the next level of their development.

“We are thrilled to be in on the ground floor of this program and able to contribute to getting it off the ground,” FASA General Manager Pete Cinalli said. “We run a lot of camps and academies throughout the year and the key is always maximizing the value for each and every player that attends. The format of this program, which focuses on high school-aged athletes, is so important and timely since college is right around the corner.

“Running the first clinic is a huge honor for our entire organization, and we are prepared to do our part to make sure this is a great experience for everyone and repay the confidence USL and the National Guard have shown in us.”

Lunch will be provided both days and clinic personnel will be available to answer questions about the college recruiting process and potential financial aid. The clinic curriculum will focus on individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games and coached scrimmages, all presented in a fun, positive learning environment.

"The National Guard is honored to be working in conjunction with USL and FASA to host local high school-aged soccer players in an upcoming clinic,” SFC David Therrell said. “Our goal is to provide these young athletes with exceptional training and an opportunity to learn about the benefits of the National Guard. It is important to us that these players are given the opportunity to learn more about playing soccer in college from college coaches and what it’s like to serve in the National Guard from local Guardsmen, all at no cost to them."

Phoenix FC News Release -- www.phoenixfc.com

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

PHOENIX -- In time for the February 11 opening of pre-season training camp, Phoenix FC has signed several players to the club’s roster. The newly signed players, pending USSF approval, are defenders Renan Felipe Boufleur, Cyprian Hedrick and Scott Morrison and midfielders Joao Inacio de Jesus Cerqueria and Anthony Obodai.

A former MLS SuperDraft pick of Sporting Kansas City, Hedrick is a professional soccer player originally born in Duala, Cameroon who began his U.S. career in 2008 at San Jacinto College. Hedrick played for the Fresno Fuego in the PDL before joining Coastal Carolina University for the 2009 season.

Between 2009 and 2001, Hedrick appeared in 59 games for Coastal Carolina, recording six goals and one assist from his defensive position. He enjoyed a standout senior season, starting all 22 matches for the Chanticleers and helping record seven shutouts as the team went 18-4-0 and reached the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual champions, University of North Carolina.

Hedrick was selected to the 2011 NCAA Men’s Division I All-South Atlantic Team by the NSCAA and First Team All-Big South. He also earned Big South Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to the 2011 NSCAA Men’s Collegiate Scholar All-American first
team.

Born in Itapiranga, Brazil, Renan Felipe Boufleur began playing soccer professionally in 2008 with the renowned Brazilian soccer club, Santos FC. Following a season with Belgium’s RSC Anderlecht in 2009, Boufler joined another Belgian club, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Joao Inacio de Jesus Cerqueria, who goes by the nickname Netinho, is also a native of Brazil, having played with renowned Brazilian soccer club, Santos FC since he was 14 years old. Just 19 years old, the 5-foot-4 four midfielder is expected to bring attacking flair to the Wolves.

"With Boufleur, Netinho and Cyprian, we fulfill our goal of adding young, promising talent to our roster and all of us are looking forward to seeing these guys on the pitch at training camp," said Managing Director Rui Filipe Bento.

Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Scott Morrison attended Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen before leaving in 2001. As a childhood fan of Aberdeen, Morrison was thrilled to begin his playing career with the club in 2003, where he immediately impressed on the field. Morrison is known particularly for his lethal ball delivery from set pieces.

Morrison moved to Dunfermline Athletic in 2005, signing with Jim Leishman in May on a free transfer. After three years with the Pars, Morrison was snapped up by Ross County on a two-year precontract deal at the start of April 2008. Morrison helped Ross County win the 2011-12 Scottish First Division.

A native of Ghana, Obodai began playing soccer early in life and would eventually go on to play as an amateur during the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championships and the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championships. He also earned four senior caps for Ghana between 2003 and 2005.

Obodai’s professional career began in 2000 with the local Ghana team, Liberty Professionals. He later signed with Dutch team Ajax in 2001, playing on loan for the Belgian team, Germinal Beerschot during the 2002–03 season. In August of 2005, Obodai signed with Sparta Rotterdam. Obodai was made club captain at Sparta, but left the club in January of 2007 to play for RKC Waalwijk. During his time in Holland and Belgium, Obodai made nearly 200 appearances.

Obodai was signed by Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer in July of 2010, making four appearances during the season.

Head Coach David Robertson, an Aberdeen FC legend, tapped his resources to attract Morrison to play stateside.

"Both Morrison and Obodai have a wealth of experience playing international soccer that will benefit the club as a whole," Robertson said. "Obodai had a taste of MLS very recently with the Houston Dynamo and we expect both of them to excel because of their First Division playing experience in Europe. Also, pairing Morrison with Mackie will delight our fans."

These new additions join forwards Darren Mackie and Aaron King, midfielders Diego Faria and Reid Schmitt and defenders Devon Grousis and Brad Keller.

Vancouver Whitecaps U-23 News Release -- www.whitecapsfc.com

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- The Canadian Soccer Association announced on Tuesday that Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Bryce Alderson, striker Caleb Clarke, and Residency striker Yassin Essa are among 23 players called up to Canada’s U-20 men’s national team for an upcoming training camp in Mexico City, Mexico. The camp will run from February 11 to 16 ahead of the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico which will take place from February 18 to March 2.

The trio were last called up to the U-20 national team in November for a 10-day training camp in the United States and Costa Rica. Clarke scored two goals in a 2-0 win over Costa Rica, while Essa also scored in an exhibition match against local competition.

Three Whitecaps FC Residency graduates were also called up, with defender Daniel Stanese and midfielders Ben Fisk and Ben McKendry named to the roster. Stanese recently signed with the reserve side of German club FC Nürnberg, while McKendry is playing at the University of New Mexico and Fisk is trialing with the ‘Caps MLS squad. All six players selected competed for the Whitecaps U-23 side in the PDL in 2012.

Up for grabs at the CONCACAF Championship will be four spots for the confederation at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013 in June.

“It will be a difficult tournament,” said U-20 head coach Nick Dasovic. “Our goal for now is to make it to the quarterfinal match which will give us a one-off chance to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in June.

“Whether we enter the match as a first or second seed from our group, we will deal with that.”

To qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Canada will need to finish in either first or second place in Group B that also includes Cuba and Nicaragua. If the Canadians are successful in qualifying for the knock-out stages they will feature in a quarterfinal match-up against a team from Group A with a spot at Turkey 2013 on the line.

Dasovic stated that his team will be buoyed by an increased number of players playing in professional environments both at home and abroad, but also cautioned that in the same way that Canada has improved its player development structure in recent years – the same can be said about many of the competing nations.

“The strength of the squad is helped by the professional club academies in Canada and by the fact that we have a number of players on the squad that play in Europe,” said Dasovic. “But at the same time, we need to realize that as we get better – all of our competition is getting better as well. You can’t take anything for granted and – at the end of the day – we will need a little luck to qualify.”

Canada will begin the tournament on February 18 with a clash against Cuba, before taking on Nicaragua on February 22. Should Canada qualify for the knock-out stages, the all-important quarterfinal match would take place on February 26. All matches at the competition will be played at either the Estadio Cuauhtemoc or the Estadio Olimpico de C.U. in Puebla.

All tournament matches will be streamed live on CONCACAF.com. On-site coverage of the CONCACAF Championship will also be provided on CanadaSoccerTV. Canada will need to trim its roster down to 20 players ahead of the CONCACAF Championship.

Next Generation Series News Release

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. -
United Soccer Leagues announced today that Atlanta Fire United has been accepted into the Next Generation Series. The Georgia-based youth powerhouse is the latest addition to the innovative, comprehensive, and unique development program engineered by USL and IMG Academy.

AFU was formed 32 years ago with a focus on creating a family friendly atmosphere to encourage the local youth to learn the sport of soccer.  Atlanta Fire United is now churning out some of the top talent in the southeast and the Next Gen Series will further establish the club as one of the nation’s best. During the past two seasons Atlanta Fire United has qualified eight teams for the Super Y-League North American Finals, with two of the teams taking home the title.

“The emphasis at our younger age groups is to teach them how to play before we teach them to compete,” Atlanta Fire United Director of Operations Mark Mackain said. “We would rather lose by four goals while learning to play from the back than to win by a toe ball from midfield.  The NGS is targeting clubs with similar philosophies and expectations making games more enjoyable to coach, play and watch.  Player development is achieved at the club level, however we believe it’s sustained with meaningful games against quality competition at the league level.”

“Atlanta Fire United is a big club, and we are pleased to have accepted them into the Next Generation Series," former Major League Soccer player and NGS Director Abe Thompson said. "Their players will have the unique experience of being part of an elite competition while benefitting from the facilities and expertise available at IMG Academy all of which will foster the development and education of the players, helping them progress to levels beyond youth soccer."

Featuring a defined regimen of training, competition, testing, and evaluation, NGS was established to provide players, coaches and clubs the opportunity to take part in an eight month, elite-level league designed to develop the complete elite youth soccer player.

"This series starts at the grassroots level and provides players an opportunity to develop a great foundation to the game," IMG Academy Director of Soccer Scott Dean said. "With the growth of the league over time to have a national presence we see this as an opportunity to take a major role in the development of world-class players. This will be the first developmental platform that truly emphasizes the development of the soccer player."

AFU will begin competition in the Next Gen Series in August 2013. The format will consist of U12 and U14 boys and girls teams participating in an eight-month season culminating in April that will feature two evaluation/competition events at IMG. Top players will be identified through the NGS Player Tracking Program and invited to attend the NGS ID Training Camp at IMG.

More than just another youth soccer league NGS features a forward-looking, innovative, comprehensive, and unique development program built on the repeated and consistent message received from top youth soccer clubs and coaches that they were seeking a fresh development initiative specifically geared toward younger teams and players. NGS was launched to fill the void by providing a comprehensive platform for clubs to best prepare their young players for the challenges which await them at the next level.

Atlanta Fire United’s Academy Program, which fields teams in the U9 through U12 age groups, is rooted in the same axiom. The Academy’s philosophy is one of playing to learn, minimizing the intense pressure to win. This philosophy transcends every training session and match. The system then allows players to move onto the Select Program geared toward developing players in a challenging soccer environment as they grow with the game.

“Our long-term goal is to develop and maintain a deeper, broader pool of talented players,” continued Mackain. “We are working with the NGS to better educate families with classroom and on-field workshops, evaluation tools which track physical and technical progress on a national scope and an unbiased nonpolitical player identification process for our national team programs.”

Orlando City Feature -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Lions defender Justin Clark saw significant playing time last year, appearing four times for the Lions with the aspirations of playing more minutes once the Lions' 2013 USL PRO schedule kicks off on April 7.

“I just want to keep improving everyday, and keep playing,” Clark told orlandocitysoccer.com. “The system we have here suits my style of play really well. I like to run and get up and down the pitch, and the system allows me to do that.”

Born and raised in Atlanta, Ga., the 24-year-old Clark featured regularly when he went to school at Rollins College in Winter Park, but accepted that seeing consistent playing time at Orlando City took time, but will eventually pay off.

“It’s a big year for him,” says Head Coach Adrian Heath on Clark’s current form. “It’s a real pivotal moment in his career, he’s going to have to show and prove that he can play in this level and be part of a squad that’s one of the best teams outside MLS (Major League Soccer).

Despite picking up time from injured players last season, the former Rollins Tar said that,“playing time is earned,” and believes if he wants to squeeze into Heath’s starting 11, proving his worth at practice and at games will determine coach’s decision.

Clark, who joins Dennis Chin as former Rollins Tar players, reflected on his college playing time at Rollins.

“When I’m not practicing with the team, I go back and kick the ball around with the guys, I still have a good relationship with them,” said Clark. “To be All-American and winning conference defender of the year are some great memories.”

Clark also spoke on the mentality the team has when competing against other clubs in different environments saying, “Even in practice, everybody wants to win every game that just translates wanting to win every competition.”

With more preseason competition coming within a matter of days, the Disney Pro Soccer Classic is something Clark is looking forward to.

“There’s a lot of smack talk with the whole Tampa rivalry, but I really want to win the Disney tournament.”

Dayton Dutch Lions News Release -- www.daytondutchlionsfc.com

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Dayton Dutch Lions FC are pleased to announce their home venue for the 2013 season. The Dutch Lions have partnered with Beavercreek High School to play at their stadium, known as Miami Valley Hospital Stadium, for all 14 men’s team home games. Two of those games (June 28 and July 14) will include double-headers with the Dutch Lions’ W-League Team.

The Dutch Lions are also very happy to announce three returning players for the 2013 USL PRO season, with forward Eli Garner, left back Shane Smith and midfielder Eric Kissinger all returning to the club.

Garner, a 21-year-old clinical finisher from Hillsborough, N.C., returns in 2013 after a great rookie season with the Dutch Lions. His performance last season during the U.S. Open Cup tournament was a highlight of Garner’s 2012 season. Following the Dutch Lions’ victory over MLS’ Columbus Crew (allowing the Dutch Lions to advance to the quarterfinals against MLS team Sporting Kansas City), Garner was invited to try out for The Crew. 2013 Coach Patrick Bal said, “He performed great [in 2012] and we are excited to have his speed and creativity back on our roster.”

Kissinger, a 27-year-old midfielder, also returns to the Dutch Lions roster for a fourth year. Kissinger has been a Dayton local since his freshman year of high school and was recently named head coach of the varsity boys’ soccer team at his alma mater, The Miami Valley School. Kissinger has also been a coach in the Dutch Lions’ youth academy and a pro player since he made his debut on the Dutch Lions’ PDL team in 2010.

“I chose the Dayton Dutch Lions because it’s a young, promising club with lots of potential for growth," Kissinger said. "We made a strong run in the U.S. Open Cup last year. [This season] I expect a good squad to be ready to play possession-style soccer and work hard [to] make it into the playoffs this year.”

Left Back Shane Smith from Casa Grande, Ariz is another great asset to be returning to the Dayton Dutch Lions roster. 27-year-old Smith made his professional debut with the Dayton Dutch Lions two years ago.

“Playing for the Dutch Lions the past two seasons, I have improved so much technically and grown more confident as a player," Smith said. "I felt another season with [the team] will help me improve my game that much more and will give me a chance to be more of a leader this upcoming season.” Smith has also joined the Dutch Lions’ youth academy staff as of January 2013.

The Dayton Dutch Lions FC will host The Pittsburgh Riverhounds for their home opening match at Beavercreek High School Stadium on Saturday, April 20. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Next Generation Series News Release

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

TAMPA, Fla -
United Soccer Leagues announced today that Southern Soccer Academy has been formally accepted into the Next Generation Series, a comprehensive, elite development platform for clubs to best prepare their young players for the challenges which await them at the next level.

Since 1988, Southern Soccer Academy (SSA) has sought to be the premier youth soccer club in the southeast and in 2012 SSA finished sixth in the Super Y-League First 11 rankings for performance on and off the field. This commitment to player development has built the club into a national powerhouse.

“Our players will certainly benefit from the plan set in place by the NGS program,” SSA Director of Soccer Steve Gummer said. “The fact that the program is being run by market leaders makes us very excited, and we are glad to be part of this new venture from the very beginning.”

In 2013, SSA will begin competition in the Next Gen Series - an exciting, new youth soccer initiative undertaken by USL and IMG Academy, established to provide players, coaches and clubs the opportunity to take part in an eight month, elite-level league. The platform will consist of U12 and U14 boys and girls teams competing from August through April that will also feature two evaluation/competition events at IMG. Top players will be identified through the NGS Player Tracking Program and invited to attend the NGS ID Training Camp at IMG.

“Southern Soccer Academy is a leading organization when it comes to developing top-class talent,” former Major League Soccer player and NGS Director Abe Thompson said. “Shaquell Moore is a great example of this, being named a team captain for the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team. We’re excited to work with SSA to help develop the next wave of elite players.”

Experts in the field of developing world-class athletes through its state-of-the-art facilities, education, and philosophy IMG Academy will help propel NGS players to the next level.

“NGS allows players to come out and play out of their comfort zone and try to do new things under match conditions without the worry of making mistakes,” said Scott Dean, IMG Academy Director of Soccer. “Allowing the player to learn through the game by trial and error will speed up the process of development.”

SSA’s mission statement reads: To enhance the growth and participation of youth soccer by promoting player development and fostering healthy competition in an environment that is enjoyable and sporting for all participants regardless of individual ability as well as creating a more challenging environment for those players who strive to reach their fullest potential.

More than just another youth soccer league NGS features a forward-looking, innovative, comprehensive, and unique development program designed to develop the complete elite youth soccer player through a defined regimen of training, competition, testing, and evaluation.

The inspiration for NGS was the repeated and consistent message received from top youth soccer clubs and coaches that they were seeking a fresh development initiative specifically geared toward younger teams and players. NGS was launched to fill the void by providing a comprehensive platform for clubs to best prepare their young players for the challenges which await them at the next level.

“The most important advantage to us is the philosophy of the program and the development side of the player and the team, playing in an environment where everyone is on board with playing the game the right way, through a passing and moving concept and letting players feel relaxed when playing,” Gummer continued. “The teaching of the game comes to mind and the openness of the program to develop the player is a true must for us.”

Three of Southern Soccer Academy’s teams attended the 2012 Super Y-League North American Finals at IMG Academy with the U16 boys winning the national championship as forward Tyler Edwards took home the Golden Boot award.

K-W United FC News Release – www.kwunitedfc.com

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

WATERLOO, Ont. – K-W United FC was formally presented to the public Wednesday afternoon as the newest PDL/W-League franchise to commence play for the 2013 season. The announcement was made at a press conference held at Core Lifestyle and Recreation Complex in Kitchener. K-W United FC is the new moniker of the former Hamilton FC Rage, which has been participating in the PDL and W-League since 2010.

“We are thrilled to bring a PDL and W-League franchise to the Waterloo Region,” said Barry MacLean, President of K-W United FC. “The sport has grown dramatically in this area and we expect these teams to be a springboard for our best local talent.”

An integral part of the club’s move to the K-W area was the enthusiastic support from the community. An official partnership was announced with Kitchener Soccer Club to coincide with the inaugural season of K-W United FC.

"The Kitchener Soccer Club is very proud and excited to have formed an alliance with the K-W United FC,” said Frank Hivert, President of Kitchener Soccer Club. “It aligns very well with our strategic vision and it will be key in our goal to provide better development programs for our soccer players and coaches for both our house league and competitive teams."

Wilfrid Laurier University will host training and game day operations out of University Stadium in Waterloo as well as provide administrative and marketing assistance.

"Laurier is proud to be the home of K-W United FC," said Director Athletics and Recreation Peter Baxter. "Our partnership marks University Stadium as the destination for high performance soccer; in the Summer with K-W United FC and in the Fall with the Laurier Golden Hawks."

In extending a warm welcome to the KW United FC, Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr noted: “This news speaks directly to the strength of community support for this sport, the forward-thinking vision of the Kitchener Soccer Club and the tireless work the club does in this region. This alliance will offer exciting opportunities for the many talented – and budding – soccer players in our community.”

The men’s PDL team will include a 14-game regular season schedule and take part in the Great Lakes Division of the Central Conference. They kickoff their season with a three-game road trip commencing in Louisville, Ky. against the River City Rovers on May 23. K-W United FC Director of Football Brett Mosen will continue as Head Coach of the PDL side.

“I’m looking forward to building a team that this community will be proud of,” Mosen said.

The women’s W-League team is scheduled to participate in a 12-game schedule out of the six-team Central Conference. They begin their season at home against local rivals the London Gryphons on May 22. The formal appointment of a Head Coach will be announced next week.

Tim Holt, President of United Soccer Leagues, was delighted with the adddition of K-W United to both leagues.

"The launch of K-W United further strengthens what is already an exceptional representation of PDL and W-League teams within Ontario that features both our reigning PDL (FC London) and W-League (Ottawa Fury) Champions," Holt said. "Under the leadership of Barry MacLean and Brett Mosen, the club will immediately provide opportunities for elite, aspiring professional players in Kitchener and Waterloo to develop and perform on a North American stage. Not only will K-W United and its players entertain local soccer fans on the field throughout the summer, but through their involvement in the soccer community year-round."

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando City announced Wednesday the signing of forward Long Tan and the re-signing of defender Erik Ustruck, pending USSF approval. Tan, who was last with Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, is a native of Dalian, China, and brings depth and experience to the Lions’ frontline while Ustruck continues to solidify Orlando’s defense heading into the 2013 season.

“We’re delighted that we brought Erik [Ustruck] back to the club,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We’re also excited to what Tan can bring to Orlando. He’s already forming a chemistry up top with Dennis [Chin] and it’s exciting.”

Tan joined D.C. United in the Summer of 2012 and went on to play in six games with three starts for the MLS side, scoring one goal in 231 minutes played. The striker began his career with Shanghai United and Pudong Zobon F.C. in China League One, the second tier of Chinese soccer, before moving to the United States. In 16 appearances, the forward scored six goals for Zobon- who finished 11th in League One standings that season.

Once in America, Tan played for Atlanta Blackhawks (PDL) and FC Tampa Bay before catching on with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2010.

The 24-year-old made his MLS debut on March 26, 2011, becoming the first Chinese born player to play in a MLS match. He also holds the mark for the first goal scored by a Chinese player. The Whitecaps then traded Tan to D.C. United in exchange for a future supplemental draft pick. Tan has also made appearances for the China U23 team, which hosted the 2008 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing.

Along with the Tan signing, Orlando City shored up their backline by bringing back a familiar face in Erik Ustruck. Ustruck played his college soccer at Santa Clara University, making seven appearances for the Under-20 National Team during his time in school. He then began his professional career after being drafted by the Houston Dynamo in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft.

The defender was eventually loaned to the Austin Aztex, connecting with the team and Head Coach Adrian Heath before signing with F.C. Tampa Bay in the 2010 offseason. After a short tenure with F.C.T.B., he rejoined Heath in Orlando, becoming a regular on the 2011 and 2012 USL PRO Championship squads.

Last season, Ustruck appeared in 17 matches for the Lions, logging seven assists in 907 minutes played.
