Tuesday, December 13, 2011
TAMPA, Fla. – The Major Indoor Soccer League announced on Tuesday that Milwaukee Wave defender Joe Hammes had been named the league’s Player of the Week for the sixth week of the 2011-12 season. Hammes had a seven-point night as the Wave maintained their undefeated start to the season, rallying from an early deficit to defeat the Rochester Lancers on Saturday night.
Hammes helped the Wave climb out of a seven-point hole against the Lancers, scoring their first goal of the game and then capping an 11-0 run to end the first quarter with his second 3-point goal of the season. He then added a pair of assists, while also blocking a pair of shots as the Wave moved to 6-0 this season.
With 19 points this season, November’s MISL Defender of the Month is tied for the league lead among defenders in points and assists (5). Saturday’s seven-point game was Hammes’ second of the season, with the 32-year-old recording a hat trick against Norfolk on November 19.
Other players considered for the weekly award included the Missouri Comets’ Geison, who took the league lead in points after scoring nine points in a pair of Comets’ victories this past weekend. The Brazilian’s 3-point goal with 32 seconds to play lifted his side to a 12-10 victory against Baltimore, and moved him onto 40 points this season, more points than he tallied a season ago.
Syracuse defender Jeff Hughes, who is tied with Hammes for the league-lead among defenders with 19 points, was also nominated after his 3-point goal gave the Silver Knights a 12-9 victory against the Baltimore Blast.
The MISL season continues with four games this weekend, with the Baltimore Blast and Missouri Comets meeting at 1st Mariner Arena on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. The Comets took a last-minute victory against the Blast last Friday night, which should leave the Blast aiming for revenge as they try to restore their advantage in the Eastern Division.
Elsewhere there’s a crucial clash in the Central Division as the Wichita Wings travel to face the Milwaukee Wave on Friday night at 8 p.m. Both of the contests between the two teams have been decided by less than three points as the two teams have rekindled their rivalry. The Rochester Lancers and Syracuse Silver Knights then meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. with second place in the Eastern Division at stake, while the weekend concludes with the Norfolk SharX hosting the Blast on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. All four of the weekend’s games will be streamed live on MISL Live (MISLlivesoccer.com).
