INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- In their first big weekend of the season the Comets have shown they have a little growing yet to do. The Milwaukee Wave deployed a high pressure game plan that proved too much for the Comets. Recently inducted to the MISL Hall of Fame, Coach Keith Tozer’s team brought their suffocating style of play to the Comets and went home undefeated after an 11-6 win.
The Comets started out the scoring in the first quarter when Byron Alvarez took a crisp pass from Cristiano. He didn’t disappoint his fans after he scored, pulling a piñata out of nowhere to throw out into the crowd after he scored.
Joe Hammes, fresh off a hat trick for the Wave on Saturday night, worked a restart to perfection and got Milwaukee on the board in the second quarter. The Wave continued to press the Comets, but the defense held strong and even put together some exciting odd-man rushes. It looked like these two teams would walk into halftime tied 2-2, but Jonatan Santos was able to sneak in a 3-point goal just before the halftime buzzer for a 5-2 Milwaukee lead.
The second half started with Alvarez determined to bring the Comets back and he scored unassisted just three minutes into the third quarter. Several minutes later Geison earned his team leading 17th point with an acrobatic volley off a Brian Harris shot that rebounded off the end boards to give the Comets their second lead of the night, 6-5, which they would hold until the end of the quarter.
The Comets looked to solidify their lead, but down a man due to Alvarez serving two minutes for a tripping penalty, the Comets were unable to stop Hewerton Moreira who put it in the back of the net just a minute into the period, restoring the Wave's lead. Marcio Leite scored again only 30 seconds later as Milwaukee pulled ahead for good, taking a 9-6 lead. Ian Bennett made his way past Comets rookie John Sosa down the right side late, beating Waltman for the score to seal the victory.
The Comets will be working hard this Thanksgiving week with little time to rest and relax. The Norfolk SharX will be in Independence on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. CT. The team encourages the fans to wear their colors as we celebrate the Comets 1st Annual “Blue Out” game. The first 2,500 fans will receive a special blue Comets T-shirt as they come into the arena. Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com or by calling the Independence Events Center box office at (816) 442-6100.
