WICHITA, Kan. - The Missouri Comets took a dramatic 16-14 overtime victory against host the Wichita Wings in the opening game of the 2011-12 Major Indoor Soccer League season, spoiling the return of the Wings to Wichita in front of a sellout crowd of 4,695 fans at Hartman Arena. Missouri forward Geison struck 4 minutes, 29 seconds into the overtime for his fifth goal of the game to hand the Comets victory.
“Today was the first real step in our season,” Wings coach Lebaron Hollimon said. “We’re going to take a lot away from tonight’s game and gear up tomorrow night. The men fought hard to the last second”
The Wings got a big performance from former Comets player Jamar Beasley, who had a hat trick. Wichita also twice took the lead in the fourth quarter, Bryan Perez scoring at the 4:19 mark and Chris Lemons scoring with a volley with just 2:07 to play. But each time the Comets hit back, Neto tying the game 14-14 with 1:52 to play.
Lemons was disappointed the Wings couldn’t send their fans home with a victory.
“The biggest story of tonight was the fans,” Lemons, a Wichita native, said. “The atmosphere out here tonight was insane. To get the opportunity to come out here and play in front of the city that has given so much to me and all of the guys on this team is a dream come true. I only wish we could have walked away with a win, but you have to give a lot of credit to the Comets – they played a solid game.”
The Wings return to action on Friday night for the second game of their doubleheader opening weekend against the Comets. The game at the Independence Event Center is scheduled for a 7:35pm CT kickoff.
