PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The highly anticipated start of the USL PRO’s inaugural season is quickly approaching, with opening day less than two months away. Through the merger of the United Soccer League’s First and Second Divisions, along with the introduction of new North American markets and four clubs from the Caribbean, USL PRO trails only Major League Soccer in the USSF pyramid of sanctioned professional soccer leagues.
With this movement up the ladder in the landscape of North American soccer, USL PRO will introduce three regional divisions (American, National and International) to bolster the competition within each club’s market. The Pittsburgh Riverhounds will compete in the National Division comprised of their regional foe the Rochester Rhinos, intra-state rival the Harrisburg City Islanders, and two new professional clubs, the Dayton Dutch Lions and FC New York.
The Riverhounds are excited to begin the 2011 season as a core of impact players will return to compete in the 24-match schedule. Fourteen players are set to return from last season’s third-place squad and will provide a solid foundation for Head Coach Justin Evans to build upon.
“This year I will take a little different approach to the season," Evans said. "We are moving up in classification and this will force me to instill competition in every training session so the squad can be molded and prepared for each game.”
