HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Harrisburg City Islanders are pleased to announce that John Gregg has been named General Manager of the USL PRO’s Harrisburg City Islanders and City Islanders Youth Academy. Gregg begins immediately in his new position following the recent resignation of former GM Kierstin Rowe.
“We are extremely happy to have brought someone with John's extensive background in both the youth and professional side of soccer that we feel necessary to continue growing our franchise,” said City Islanders CEO Eric Pettis. “The USL and the soccer community have higher expectations and we feel that John is the right person to allow us to reach our goals. We are very excited about our future.”
As a former player and advocate for youth soccer, Gregg’s soccer career is extensive. A 1988 graduate from Central Dauphin High School (Harrisburg) and Paul Smith’s College and Johnson State College, Gregg was a member of the 1992 NCAA Division II National Championship team. A goalkeeper, Gregg was part of the Hershey Impact (1989-90) and the Harrisburg Heat (1996-2000) professional teams.
With over 25 years of coaching at the club level, Gregg as played an integral role in developing youth soccer in Central PA. He has coached multiple youth teams at all levels. His most recent coaching includes Director of Coaching Playing Development for Central Penn Youth Soccer Association (CPYSL), Lower Dauphin Soccer Association/LDC United Club Goalkeeper Coach, LDC United Staff Coach and Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) and USYSA Region 1 ODP Staff. John is involved with the coaching Educational Staff for EPYSA, USYSA (US Youth Soccer Association), and the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America).
"I'm very excited to venture into a new realm of soccer management," Gregg said. "I have taken a soccer career as a player, both youth and professionally, and turned it full circle into a professional position that is a dream comes true. I look forward to the new challenges the GM position will bring, the new experiences, and the growth as a person I will make with the Islander family.”
Gregg resides in Hummelstown with his wife, Angie and two daughters. The Harrisburg City Islanders are preparing to enter their ninth season following a successful summer that saw them capture the USL PRO National Division Title before finishing as runner-up in the USL PRO Championship Game. The club also operates the Harrisburg City Islanders Youth Academy which offers year-round training, 19 youth teams and summer camps. Gregg can be reached at john@cityislanders.com.
