TAMPA, Fla. – “USL Breakaway Magazine,” the fast-paced 30-minute highlight and feature show chronicling United Soccer Leagues and its system of professional and elite-level amateur leagues, debuts a new episode at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 13 on FOX Soccer.
In the latest episode, hosted by Kenn Tomasch, we look at a pair of thrilling championship games, the career of a USL Hall of Famer and the impending start of the 2011-12 Major Indoor Soccer League season. We start in Bremerton, Washington where the Kitsap Pumas held off the Laredo Heat for their first PDL championship. Robbie Christner’s 11th minute tap-in from game MVP Brian Burke’s feed was all that was needed as the Pumas weathered a late Laredo onslaught to take the title.
Next we sit down with USL Hall of Fame coach Bob Lilley, who traces his career from Hershey to Montreal, Vancouver, and Rochester. Success has always followed Lilley, and it became clear immediately that coaching was his forte as he was named Coach of the Year after his first season in Hershey in 1997. Lilley most recently led the Rochester Rhinos of USL PRO to the best record in the National Division.
We head indoors next with a preview of the 2011-12 MISL season, set to kickoff November 3. The top level of indoor soccer in North America, the MISL has grown to seven teams this season following USL’s acquisition of the tradition-rich league. The Norfolk SharX, Rochester Lancers, Syracuse Silver Knights and Wichita Wings join the Baltimore Blast, Milwaukee Wave and Missouri Comets for what is sure to be an exciting 2011-12 season. We rewind for yet another “Great Moment in USL History,” then get to know the personalities behind USL PRO in our regular “On the Spot” segment. “USL News” touches on the MISL, the upcoming Super Y-League North American Finals, the 2011 USL Annual General Meeting in Clearwater, and Major Beach Soccer’s upcoming National Championships.
Finally, we look back at what is being called the most entertaining championship game in USL history. The Harrisburg City Islanders and Orlando City Lions put on a memorable display for the more than 11,000 fans in attendance and the national television audience on FOX Soccer at the 2011 USL PRO Championship Presented by Umbro. With four goals in the final moments of regulation and overtime, followed by a penalty kick shootout, Orlando City’s first USL PRO title was one for the ages.
“USL Breakaway Magazine” is in its sixth season and has become a year-round fixture thanks to a three-year broadcast deal between USL and FOX Soccer. “USL Breakaway Magazine” is produced by Cultural Global Media Inc.
