GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - F.C. New York is pleased to announce the addition of five players as the start of the 2011 USL PRO season approaches. Gary Boughton, Brent Brockman, Troy Cole, Steve Covino and Josiah Snelgrove have all signed with the club, pending USL and USSF approval. The players were introduced, along with their teammates, at the 77th annual Huntington N.Y. St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday.
More than 50,000 people packed the sidewalks as bagpipes, fire companies and players from F.C. New York marched in the spring sun. Local soccer teams cheered as the team passed and handed out schedules, signed autographs and posed for pictures. The new players were impressed with the crowd and gave them something to cheer.
“These young men are committed to the sport, to the club and to themselves, I am very proud to add them to what I believe will be a strong roster,” F.C. New York President Doug Petersen said at the event. “They come to us from upstate New York, Pennsylvania, California Connecticut and Canada, each sharing a reason for coming to New York City - to win!”
Gary Boughton
A 5-foot-10, 165-pound native of Buffalo, N.Y., Boughton spent his college career at Medaille College in his hometown. He was a four-year starter and twice captain of the Medaille Mavericks. In 2009, Boughton set the all-time NCAA career assists record with 82 in his four seasons. He was twice named Scholastic All-America, four times named Regional All-America, twice named AMCC Conference Player of the Year, and four times first team all-conference. In his 82 games at Medaille, Boughton scored 35 goals to add to his 82 assists, and started all 82 contests. Boughton also spent four summer seasons playing in the USL Premier Development League. He spent his first two years with the Fort Wayne Fever, leading the team in scoring in 2008. In 2009 he was a member of the Austin Aztex U-23s, and in 2010 was an integral part of the Houston Leones’ run to the final eight of the PDL playoffs.
Brent Brockman
The 5-10, 170-pound native of Dillsburg, Penn. was a member of the George Mason University class of 2010 and spent his first two season at St. Francis College (Penn.). “B²” to his teammates, the attacking midfielder is quick and determined on the pitch.
Troy Cole
Six feet and 185 pounds, Cole attended Laguna Hills High School in Laguna Hills, Calif., and played two years of college soccer at Irvine Valley College, recording three goals and three assists as a defender. He transferred to Mars Hill College where he scored seven goals in 35 games and was his team’s captain as a senior. During his college years, he also played with the Atlanta Blackhawks in the PDL. Cole signed his first professional contract in 2010 with AC St. Louis.
Steve Covino
The 5-8 150-pound native of Bristol, Connecticut posted career-highs in every major offensive category this past season playing for Siena College. For his efforts, he was named to the All-MAAC Team. Covino was also named to the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-North Atlantic Region and is Siena’s first student-athlete to sign a professional contract.
Josiah Snelgrove
From Hartland, New Brunswick, the 6-1, 185-pound defender is not new to USL. Snelgrove signed with the Charlotte Eagles after graduating from Houghton College in Eastern New York State in 2007 and played there until 2009. He took the 2010 season off to care for an injury. At Houghton, Snelgrove scored two goals and contributed 13 assists in his four years, earning all-conference honors three times and receiving 2007 NAIA All-America honors.
