CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The 2011 Green Business Challenge concluded its inaugural year with awards to businesses and institutions. The Charleston Battery was one of seven local businesses to the top award of “Overall Excellence”. The Green Business Challenge (GBC) is a voluntary Charleston metro area program aimed at a broad range of local businesses and institutions to promote environmental sustainability while enhancing profitability.
“Part of the power of the Green Business Challenge is that what each office or business, including City Hall, does individually may seem inconsequential," Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. said. "However, added to the efforts of 54 other businesses and offices and repeated year after year, it does make a difference. I am proud of the collective totals. Just think what the savings can be next year.”
Awards were given for achieving Overall Excellence as well as special achievements. The awards were created by Sustainable Warehouse. Sustainable Warehouse is a non- profit which recycles and houses used building materials for reuse.
Overall Excellence awards were given to those businesses scoring in the highest tier with 76 points or better.
In addition to a comprehensive recycling program the Battery has made numerous changes to the way it conducts business over the past few years with the overall aim of reducing its energy use. Changes include, switching light bulbs, reducing water use and installing an 11KW solar array and a geothermal HVAC system.
The Charleston Battery kicks off its 20th season of professional soccer in 2012; season ticket packages are on sale now starting at just $120; to reserve seats or for more information please call (843) 971-GOAL (4625) or visit www.charlestonbattery.com.
