ORLANDO, Fla. – In a ceremony at the September 12 City of Orlando City Council meeting, Orlando City Soccer Club was honored by the City Council and Mayor Buddy Dyer for their victory in the USL PRO Championship Game on September 3rd. Mayor Dyer issued a proclamation declaring September 12, 2011, as “Orlando City Lions Day” in the City of Orlando.
“It was an absolute honor and a pleasure to represent the City of Orlando in the USL PRO Championship this year,” said Phil Rawlins, Owner/President of Orlando City. “We were delighted with the reception the City and the fans gave to us, and we were thoroughly delighted to bring back a championship in our first year. We’re looking forward to defending our championship and having many, many more years of success in Orlando.”
The full proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, on Saturday, September 3, 2011, the Orlando City Soccer Club won the USL PRO Championship at the Florida Citrus Bowl defeating the Harrisburg City Islanders; and
WHEREAS, the Lions, as the club is known, have already brought Orlando its first professional soccer championship, the USL PRO Regular Season title, in a decade; and
WHEREAS, the Orlando City Soccer Club has received four All-League Awards for Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, the Orlando City Soccer Club not only led the League in attendance – with the highest attendance in the USA outside of Major League Soccer – but also surpassed 11,000 people at the USL PRO Championship final;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BUDDY DYER, Mayor of the City of Orlando, hereby do Proclaim Monday, September 12, 2011 as “Orlando City Lions Day” in the City of Orlando.
