DAYTON, Ohio – The Dayton Dutch Lions took a 2-0 victory against F.C. New York on Sunday night at Miami Valley South Stadium as George Davis IV and Lucien Seymour scored either side of halftime for the Dutch Lions’ second victory of the season.
The Dutch Lions (2-13-6) started opened the scoring early as Davis IV took advantage of a mistake in New York’s defense in the third minute and gave the Dutch Lions the lead. Collecting the ball about 30 yards from goal and took a shot that went in perfectly over F.C. New York’s goalkeeper Thorne Holder for his team-high seventh of the season.
Neither side was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the half. New York (4-11-6) came close to equalizing as a shot hit the inside of the post, while Dayton also had a pair of opportunities to extend its lead.
The two sides went back and forth to start the second half, but it took until the 60th minute for either side to create a serious chance on goal. F.C. New York went close to finding an equalizer again after some chaos in front of the Dutch Lion’s goal, but Dayton goalkeeper Jesper Leerdam made a spectacular save and kept the lead for the Lions.
Dayton went close to adding to its lead shortly after when Marvin van der Pluijm was put through one-on-one with New York goalkeeper Thorne Holder, but he was unable to finish the opportunity. In the 70th minute, though, Mettin Copier sent a long ball downfield for Seymor, who picked it up, went around two defenders and targeted fired into the back of the net, giving the Dutch Lions a 2-0 lead.
Leerdam, who was making his return from injury in the Dayton goal, had to be sharp for the remainder of the game as New York outshot Dayton 11-7 in the second half, but he was able to record his second shutout of the season as the Dutch Lions claimed victory.
“It was a tough battle, but we pulled it off,” Dutch Lions coach Ivar van Dinteren said.
The Dutch Lions want to thank their fans for coming out and hope to see them again at the club’s next home game when they play F.C. New York on Wednesday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Miami Valley South Stadium.
