HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Harrisburg City Islanders lost to the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-1 Saturday night in front of 1,473 fans at the Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. City Islanders forward Jose Angulo scored first for his club but it wasn’t enough as Hammerheads Andriy Budnyy and Chris Banks score two unanswered goals to earn Wilmington’s 11th win of the season.
After 17 minutes of back and forth possession, Angulo opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season through Sainey Touray’s sixth assist. Wilmington would successfully respond in the 29th minute as Banks delivered a ball to Budnyy, who showcased his fancy foot work, enabling him to strike the ball into the left side of the net with his right foot for his sixth goal of the season.
At the hour-mark, the Hammerheads would take a 2-1 lead when they were awarded a penalty kick after a Wilmington player was pulled down in the box. Banks stepped up to take the penalty kick and snuck it past City Islanders goalkeeper Chase Harrison. It was Banks’ sixth goal of the season. The City Islanders would come close to evening the score in the 82nd minute as midfielder Jason Hotchkin fed a beautifully left footed cross through the Hammerheads box, but no one would get a touch on it.
Harrisburg also went close in the 87th minute when midfielder Nelson Becerra sent a ball to forward Jason Seabrook for the shot, only to find the side-netting. The City Islanders last chance for an equalizer came in stoppage time as defender Stephen Basso passed a ball to Brian Ackley for the rocket shot but it was blocked by the Hammerheads backline.
The Hammerheads earned their fourth away win of the season, moving three points behind American Division leader Orlando City. With the loss the City Islanders are still in second place of the National Division, four points behind the Rochester Rhinos.
The City Islanders’ next home game of the season is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Friday at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island against National Division rival F.C. New York.
