QUEENS, N.Y. -- Luke Mulholland had two goals and an assist for Wilmington in a 3-1 win over F.C. New York on Friday night. Jhonny Arteaga scored his 11th goal in all competitions for New York via a penalty kick for the home side.
After a 15-minute delay because of severe weather conditions, Andriy Budnyy opened the scoring in the 29th minute for the Hammerheads on the counter-attack after Mulholland had won the ball near midfield.
The game remained 1-0 until the 52nd minute when New York goalkeeper Thorne Holder’s pass was intercepted by Mulholland 30 yards from goal. The Wilmington midfielder took a touch and drove a shot into the bottom left corner to make the score 2-0.
New York cut the score to 2-1 in the 56th minute after good work from Tadeu Terra. The Brazilian turned inside and struck a shot heading for the far corner, only to see the ball deflect off the arm of Wilmington’s Gareth Evans. Arteaga dispatched the ensuing penalty kick into the right side netting as the home side looked to spring to life.
But Mulholland made it 3-1 in the 62nd minute after confusion in the F.C. New York penalty box. The Englishman won the ball 16 yards out on the left side and cut to his right foot, beating Holder with sheer power for the final goal.
F.C. New York remains on 18 points (4-10-6) with the loss and trails the Pittsburgh Riverhounds by five points for the fourth and final playoff berth in the USL PRO National Division. Wilmington is now on 36 points (11-6-3), moving into second place in the American Division.
F.C. New York’s final home game is Sunday, August 7 against the Rochester Rhinos at 2 p.m. Tickets start at 12 dollars with group rates available, while students get in for only five with a valid ID. For purchasing and information please call 866-827-0154 or email tickets@fcnewyorksoccer.com.
