WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads avenged a Friday night loss in their second game of back-to-back matches against the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday night as they prevailed, 3-0, in front of a crowd of 3,533 at Legion Stadium.
The Hammerheads (10-6-3) earned three points for the win and now hold 33 points in the league, moving up to third place in USL PRO's American Division standings. The Eagles (8-7-4) remain on 28 points, trailing the Charleston Battery by four points for the division's final playoff place.
Just eight minutes into the first half Wilmington captured the lead when midfielder Manny Guzman sent a fast cross to the Hammerheads leading scorer Luke Mulholland, who put away his seventh goal of the season.
In the 31st minute, the Hammerheads were given a free kick just outside the top of the penalty area. Midfielder Andryi Budnyy would not let the opportunity pass the Hammerheads by as he drilled a shot past Charlotte goalkeeper Eric Reed, pushing the margin to 2-0. It was Budnyy's fifth goal of the season.
Minutes later, a confident Brock Duckworth, who finished with three saves, rushed off his line to meet Eagles midfielder Diego Martins, one-on-one, and came away with a save for Wilmington as they carried a 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Hammerheads kept the momentum flowing in the opening minute of the second half when midfielder Tanner Wolfe made his scoring debut of the season with a diving header off a shot by Mulholland, which ricocheted off the crossbar.
Next Friday, July 29, the Hammerheads will travel to New York to face the F.C. New York at Belson Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Eagles will return home and play to host the Rochester Rhinos on Friday at 7 p.m.
