PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds gain added security in USL PRO’s National Division standings on Wednesday night with a 3-1 win against the Dayton Dutch Lions at Charliers Valley Stadium. The Riverhounds conceded an early goal to Dayton on a set piece just outside the penalty area. Following the goal by Dayton’s Marvin van der Pluijm, the Riverhounds recorded three unanswered goals to push their unbeaten streak to six games.
The Dutch Lions were awarded a set piece 19 yards from goal and did not waste the opportunity to take the early lead. Van der Pluijm stepped up to the ball and struck an up-and-down shot over the wall and into the back of the net.
The Riverhounds first goal came off a left-to-right diagonal pass from Tommy Gray behind the Dutch Lions defense. Midfielder Jason Yeisley connected with back end of Gray’s cross at the far post. Trying to slow down to prepare his body for a shot, Yeisley lost his footing but maintained possession of the ball. As Yeisley rose to his feet, he found a small crease to lay a ball back for Jeremy Deighton. Looking at an empty goal, Deighton passed the ball into the net to even the score.
Nearing the intermission, the Riverhounds received a set piece on the right flank near midfield. Gray drove a long right-footed service to the top of the penalty area. Fighting off his marker, Yeisley leaped and cleanly headed Gray’s cross into the top left corner of the goal to put the home side up for good.
After halftime, the Dutch Lions failed to clear their lines on a corner kick, resulting in the Riverhounds adding to their lead. Matt Tuttle delivered a quality ball to the back post, but the Dutch Lions flicked the ball past the slashing Riverhounds. The ball squirted out in the path of Shintaro Harada, who took one touch and served the ball back into the penalty area. Rising above the crowd again, Yeisley headed the ball down for Chad Severs inside the six-yard box. Severs spun to his right and volleyed home the insurance goal in the 68th minute.
The Riverhounds will travel north tomorrow to match-up against the Rochester Rhinos for the USL PRO Game of the Week on FOX Soccer this Friday. The game is slated for an 8 p.m. kickoff at Sahlen’s Stadium.
