Quebec City Amiral News Release - www.amiraldequebec.com

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

QUEBEC CITY – General Manager Maxime Barabé announced today that the Québec Amiral SC of the USL W-League will play host to Standard Femina de Liège from Belgium for two friendly games, April 13 and 16 at Stade Leclerc.

The Standard is a 13-time national champion since its foundation in 1971 and is currently in second place in its championship. It has no less than seven international players in its lineup and should be a great opponent to the Amiral.

“They certainly will be in better sync than we are at this time of the year,” new Amiral coach Samir Ghrib said. “But it will be a great preparation for us and a tremendous opportunity for our young players to show they belong.”

The event is part of the 100th birthday of the Québec Soccer Federation, and is one of the highlights of the celebrations taking place all year long. On the men’s side, a provincial U-23 selection will host the U-19 team of the FC Metz, a French pro team, also at Stade Leclerc on April 14 and 17.

“From what I see, they are fast, physical and move well in their 4-3-3 formation.” Ghrib said. “I expect an excellent challenge but I think we should hold our own.”

The Amiral will begin its third season in the W-League in June. These will be the first international games in the club’s history. This is considered an important year by everyone in the organization and expectations are high. The team will play in a brand new 2,000-seat stadium in downtown Québec City and hopes it translates in fan support. Recruiting and preparations are well underway to make this year a special one.

“This is a new step for the Amiral and for soccer in the Québec City area,” Barabé concluded. “This is a fantastic way to bring more public attention to the team and the high level of soccer we play.”
