GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – F.C. New York of USL PRO is proud to announce that former Chesterfield striker Ben Algar has signed a one-year contract pending USL and USSF approval. Algar, 21, came to New York for trials this summer and has been training with Matlock Town FC since then to maintain his fitness.

Algar signed the deal alongside F.C. New York President Doug Petersen at the Copthorne Hotel, Bramall Lane in Sheffield, England. Algar was surrounded by family and well-wishers, including Sheffield United Vice Chairman, David Green and Dave MacCarthy, who oversees SUFC academy. Also in attendance were Carl Shieber, Sheffield United head of football administration, as well as football greats Brian Deane and Tony Agana.

Algar was born in Chesterfield, England and started his career as a trainee at Sheffield United Academy. He turned professional after his 18th birthday and his debut came against Notts County. Algar was described by then manager Lee Richardson as a “tricky left winger with an eye for the goal.” Algar became available when Richardson’s contract was not renewed and new manager John Sheridan made changes to the squad.

“Ben came recommended to us and flew to New York for a few days in August and performed very well,” F.C. New York Technical Director Matt Weston said. “He is very quick and relentless at getting to the goal.”

“I am so excited to be coming to New York; friends tell me what great fans New York has….I just can’t wait,” said Algar, who will report to training camp next week.

Agana, who scored 42 goals in his five seasons at Sheffield United, offered Algar some advice as he embarks on the next chapter of his professional career.

“Stay focused, work hard and good things will happen,” the striker said.
