QUEENS, N.Y. - Quame Holder notched a goal for F.C. New York as the home side held the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to a lone goal from Neil Shaffer in a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at Belson Stadium.

New York came out strong from the beginning, relying on the creativity of midfielder Owen Morrison for scoring opportunities. In the 19th minute, defender Sam Stockley won a corner after seeing his cross deflected wide. Morrison stepped up to take the ensuing kick, whipping the ball towards the near post where it found the head of Holder, who powered it past Pittsburgh goalie Hunter Gilstrap to open the scoring.

It was the start of a strong game overall for Holder, who was able to consistently win possession in midfield and helped to disrupt the rhythm of a Riverhounds side that had scored two goals against New York the past weekend.

Despite a solid opening period, the home side was pegged back in the 29th minute by Shaffer, whose far-post header from a corner kick evened the game. New York’s Jhonny Arteaga had a chance in the 33rd minute, but was unable to direct his header past Gilstrap following a cross from Morrison as the sides went to the break even.

The introduction of Tadeu Terra in the 54th minute picked up the pace for New York, as the Brazilian knocked some much needed energy into the game. His combination play with Arteaga and Morrison led to multiple chances, keeping the pressure on the visiting team.

New York goalkeeper Steven Diaz made a crucial double save in the 60th minute, blocking Jason Yeisley from six yards with his chest and then keeping out the rebound with a kick-save.

Even though New York continued to push up the field, the second goal wouldn’t come as both sides picked up a point.

F.C. New York finds itself with 18 points (4-8-6), good for fifth place in the National Division. Pittsburgh now has 20 points (5-9-5) and remains in fourth place in the division.

F.C. New York’s next home game is Friday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m. against the Wilmington Hammerheads as it bids for a playoff spot. For tickets and information please call 866-827-0154 or email tickets@fcnewyorksoccer.com.
