TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues unveiled its 2011 Super Y-League Boys Olympic Development Camp select teams on Monday, honoring the players in the 94-95 and 96-97 age groups that had standout weeks at the annual SYL ODP National Camps this past weekend at the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
The players were chosen from a pool of 187 total players in attendance at the camp by the coaches in attendance under the direction of USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor.
“We were very pleased with the level of play and competition we saw at the camp this year,” Mellor said. “We hope that the players took away a great deal from the on-field training and scrimmages and the off-field activities that will help them become better players in the future. The players were in awe of the facilities and opportunities this week offered them and the chance to hear from Kasey Keller and U17 National Team coach Erik Imler on what it takes to reach the next level.”
Only two members of the Select A teams were returning members of the 2010 Select teams, with Race Williams from Mountain FC and Rece Buckmaster from the Fort Wayne Fever earning selections for the second consecutive year. Williams was joined on the 94-95 Select A team by Mountain teammate Tristan Wallis-Meyer, while the PSG Spartans also had two players named to the team that faced the IMG Academy Select team on the final day of the camp in forward Vincenzo Marna and defender Timothy Dibisceglie.
Alliance Academy led the selections on the 96-97 Select teams with four players - forward Nebojsa Popovic, midfielder Bradley Dunwell, forward Morris Kamara and defender Samuel Akpik - chosen. The Ottawa Fury placed three players on the A team, with midfielder Thomas Bisset, forward Jacob Schroeter and goalkeeper Erhan Yilmaz all chosen.
The 94-95 Select B team finished the camp on a high note, defeating the U16 Indian national team, 1-0. The side, which included 2010 Select team players Landon Collier of Alliance Academy and Nicolas Pascual-Leone of the MPS Bulldogs, was one of two squads to earn victories against outside opposition at the conclusion of the weekend.
