Tuesday, July 12, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL PRO Team of the Week for Week 14 of the 2011 season today, honoring Charlotte Eagles midfielder Jorge Herrera as Player of the Week after he had a goal and two assists as the Eagles won two out of three games to maintain their pursuit of a playoff place in USL PRO’s American Division.

Herrera had a goal and an assist as the Eagles took a 3-1 victory against F.C. New York on Independence Day. He then added an assist as Charlotte won the first of two meetings between the Eagles and the Richmond Kickers on Friday night, keeping the Eagles in the race to make the playoffs. Herrera was joined by forward Sallieu Bundu, who scored the game-tying goal as the Eagles rallied for victory against Richmond.

The Wilmington Hammerheads also had a big weekend with a pair of victories in Antigua that moved them into fourth place in the American Division standings. Midfielder Andres Cuero, who scored the game-winning goal in the Hammerheads’ 3-2 victory on Sunday, and defender Tom Parratt, who helped his side record a shutout on Friday night before scoring his first goal of the season on Sunday, were named to the Team of the Week.

Pittsburgh also had a pair of players named to the Team of the Week as goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap and defender Sterling Flunder were both selected after the Riverhounds’ 2-1 victory against New York that saw them move into the playoff positions in the National Division. Flunder’s goal was just the second of his professional career.

Also selected was Charleston’s Alex Caskey, who scored his first professional goal as the Battery took a 1-0 victory against division leader Orlando City at Blackbaud Stadium, and he was joined by center back Colin Falvey who was excellent as the Battery shut out a Lions side that is the second-highest scorer in the league.
