TAMPA, Fla. – Sunday afternoon’s 3-0 victory against the Laval Comets earned the Ottawa Fury the title of 2011 W-League regular season champion. Ottawa improved to a perfect 11-0-0 in its 2011 W-League campaign and has one match remaining ahead of the playoffs.
Reigning W-League Player of the Week Mallory Outerbridge scored her league-leading 14th goal and 31st point this weekend to propel the Fury to the regular season crown. The Fury have been in red hot form all season and will look to begin their march to the W-League Championship Presented by Umbro in a week’s time when the regular season concludes.
The 2011 W-League Championship Presented by Umbro will take place in Seattle, Washington and is being hosted by the Seattle Sounders Women. The Sounders already have one spot in the finals by virtue of hosting and the other three spots will be determined by the W-League playoffs. The top two teams in each division earn a trip to the conference playoffs, and the winner of each conference playoff receives one of the three open spots in the W-League Championship Presented by Umbro.
Joining Ottawa in locking up playoff spots are the Atlanta Silverbacks, who clinched the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference best records this weekend, the Long Island Roughriders, and the New Jersey Wildcats. The Santa Clarita Blue Heat could be the next team to join the group with a win on Wednesday.
