QUEENS, N.Y. -- F.C. New York lost to the Charlotte Eagles 3-1 on Monday despite a late surge from New York that culminated in a headed goal from leading scorer Jhonny Arteaga. Charlotte tallied through Jorge Herrera, Alan Sanchez, and an own goal.

Herrera opened the scoring in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the New York penalty area. Sanchez doubled the Charlotte lead in the 22nd minute, firing in a header off of the inside of the left post after a cross from Mark Bloom. New York defender Karsten Smith then knocked in the third as he attempted to the clear the ball in the 33rd.

New York attempted to spring to life at the start of the second half, but was unable to capitalize on multiple opportunities, the best of which being a Troy Cole bicycle kick that flew right across the face of goal.

It took until the 84th minute for the home side to score, and it was Arteaga who recorded his eighth goal in all competitions. Substitute Joey Tavernese beat his man down the right side and whipped in a cross to the Colombian striker, who rose above the defense to power the ball into the back of the net from six yards out.

It was too little too late for New York, which drops to 4-7-5 (17 points) yet remains in line for a playoff berth in fourth place in the National Division. Charlotte moves to fifth place in the American Division with a 6-5-3 record (21 points).

F.C. New York’s next two games are perhaps the most vital of the club’s inaugural season to date. New York faces first-placed Rochester on Friday, July 8, at 8 p.m and then travels to face Pittsburgh on Saturday, July 9, at 7 p.m. as it continues its playoff push. The Riverhounds trail New York by just a point in the National Division standings.

F.C. New York’s next home match is Saturday, July 16, against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 3 p.m. at Belson Stadium. For tickets and information please call 866-827-0154 or email tickets@fcnewyorksoccer.com.
