FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- In a rematch from June 24, Mississippi Brilla managed a second 2-1 victory against the Fort Lauderdale Schulz Academy on Sunday night as Moses Aduny scored twice off a pair of assists by David Palmer.
Mississippi won the first meeting between the two teams 2-1 with an injury-time winner.
Aduny, who is the Brilla's leading goalscorer, added to his tally when Palmer crossed a ball to the far post for Aduny to nod home from close range in the 17th minute.
The same two players would combine again in the 32nd minute after Brilla earned a free kick about 35 yards away from goal, right by the sideline. Palmer's service found Aduny's head again and the lead was doubled, and would remain 2-0 when the referee whistled for halftime. Aduny now has 10 goals this season, putting him tied for fourth in the Premier Development League.
Fort Lauderdale pulled a goal back in the 64th minute when former Brilla player Andrew Wright turned and fired toward goal. Brilla 'keeper Zach Torp got a hand to the shot, but it was quickly finished off by Sallim Dahman. The next 25 minutes would be nervous for the Brilla as they struggled to put anything together offensively. The defense also took a blow when Richard Dixon was forced to leave with a hamstring injury.
But despite some close calls, the Mississippi defense refused to concede another goal and the referee finally blew the whistle for full time.
After winning 2-0 Friday night at the Bradenton Academics, tonight's win secured a berth in the Premier Development League playoffs for Mississippi. It will be the third consecutive year that the fifth-year franchise will participate in the PDL's postseason.
"It's good to get six points on the road," said head coach Dave Dixon. "Not a great performance, but a road win in so important in this league."
Mississippi returns home and will host the Baton Rouge Capitals on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Harper Davis Field at Millsaps College.
