HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Harrisburg City Islanders defeated the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday night in a thrilling 4-0 win in front of nearly 2,000 fans at the Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. A pair of goals from both USL PRO Player of the Week Andrew Welker and forward Sainey Touray extended the City Islanders’ undefeated streak to four, while also ending the Eagles’ seven-game undefeated streak.
Though the City Islanders almost opened the scoring in the 10th minute when a Jose Angulo drive hit the post, it wasn’t until the very last moment of the first half that they took a 1-0 lead on Welker’s third goal of the season. Forward Brian Ombiji cut open the defense and found Welker making a perfectly timed run for the technical finish. Harrisburg dominated Charlotte offensively in the first half, finishing with more shots (7-2) and corners (6-1).
In the 65th minute, Welker received a fine ball from Ombiji again for the right-corner finish. The goal marked Welker’s fourth goal in his last three games. 71st minute substitute Touray made his presence on the field known immediately as he controlled a cross from the Islanders backline for the breakaway, finishing with the outside of his right foot past goalkeeper Eric Reed in the 74th minute.
It was Touray’s fourth goal of the season and he wasn’t done there as he added his second of the night in the 88th minute, finishing from close range after midfielder Jason Hotchkin laid off a pass in the middle of the six-yard box for his fifth goal of the season.
The win extends the City Islanders’ undefeated streak to four games (3-0-1) and keeps them solidly in second place in the USL PRO National Division, trailing the Rochester Rhinos by three points. The City Islanders are also 5-1-1 at home this season, with a National Division-high 16 goals scored on their home turf.
The City Islanders’ next home game of the season is scheduled for next Sunday, July, 10th at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island against the Dayton Dutch Lions. Chevy will be attending the game to give out free prizes, including a chance to win a Chevy vehicle for one week! Five Chevrolet cars will be on display in the parking lot prior to the 3 p.m. kickoff. Fans have the opportunity to test drive these cars. Any fans that test drives will be entered into a drawing for a combined Islanders and Chevrolet prize.
