QUEENS, N.Y. – F.C. New York set the tone early in a 2-0 victory over Antigua Barracuda F.C. as the club’s leading goal-scorer Jhonny Arteaga notched both goals to bring his season tally to seven in all competitions.
New York dominated possession from the start in front of a boisterous home crowd, with midfielders Owen Morrison and Stephen Roche spraying the ball across the field. The home team broke the deadlock in the 13th minute as Morrison received a pass near midfield and turned to find Arteaga with a chipped through-ball towards the right post, which the Colombian forward slotted into the far corner via a half-volley.
The second goal wasn’t far off, as Arteaga collected a loose ball and rocketed a shot into the upper-left corner from 30 yards in the 17th minute. Antigua goalkeeper Keita DeCastro could only stand and watch as the pace of the ball left him planted on his line. It was a dream start for New York in front of a crowd of 1,653 with many more watching across the nation on FOX Soccer.
Despite several chances on the counterattack throughout the game, Antigua was unable to convert as New York looked to capitalize on its possession advantage. New York almost added a third in the 78th minute as Gary Boughton pounced on a sloppy back pass, only to strike the crossbar with his ensuing shot as DeCastro gave chase.
The win moves New York to 4-6-5 (17 points), good for fourth place in the National Division of USL Pro. Antigua is now 7-8-1 (22 points) and remains in fourth place in the American Division.
The game will re-air on FOX Soccer on Saturday, July 2 at noon, Sunday at 4 p.m. and Tuesday, July 5 at 1 p.m.
F.C. New York’s next home game is on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Belson Stadium. For tickets and information please call 866-827-0154 or email tickets@fcnewyorksoccer.com.
