WILMINGTON, N.C. – Wilmington Hammerheads forward Andryi Budnny scored two goals in the second half to lead Wilmington to a solid 4-0 victory over the Central Florida Kraze in a first round game of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night at Legion Stadium.
The Hammerheads will take on the Charlotte Eagles in the second round on Tuesday, June 21, at Legion Stadium in a 7:30 p.m. match.
Both teams struggled offensively in the opening 30 minutes with only two shots on goal, both by Budnyy. But then a fancy-footed Jyler Noviello dribbled past the Kraze goalkeeper and several defenders and found the back of an open net for a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.
Wilmington continued to control the play offensively when midfielder Luke Mulholland tucked his shot inside the far post off an assist from Noviello in the 42nd minute to increase the margin to 2-0, which remained the score at halftime.
The Hammerheads continued to manufacture scoring opportunities after the break, outshooting the Kraze, 13-5, and in the 70th minute Budnyy’s third attempt on goal would not be denied as he fired a shot by the goalkeeper for his first goal of the match and a 3-0 Wilmington advantage.
Just minutes later, Budnyy fought his way to the front of the goal and capped the scoring with his second goal of the evening in the 73rd minute. Mulholland was credited with an assist on the play.
This Saturday, June 18, the Hammerheads will travel to Orlando, Fla., to take on league-leading Orlando City Lions in a 7:30 p.m. match that can be seen live on Fox Soccer as the USL PRO Game of the Week.
The Kraze will play away from home again on Thursday, June 16, in a 5:30 p.m. match against Bradenton at IMG Soccer Academy.
