OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The St Louis Lions earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory against cross-state rivals the Kansas City Brass on a steamy evening at the Overland Park Soccer Complex. Dan Meagher scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Lions in the 75th minute.

The Lions stormed out of the gates early andscored in the first five minutes of the game when forward Henrique Suosa chased down a ball on the right side and found Pat Kelly at the near post. Kelly’s goal was his first of the season.

Later in the half the Lions went up 2-0 when Suosa buried a driven cross by Gavin Smith. Smith stole the ball from the Brass midfield and charged past the defender leading to the cross. The Lions continued to put pressure and had numerous opportunities in the first half but failed to add to their lead. Kelly was denied on a point-blank header late in the half and Smith missed the goal by inches late in the half.

In the second half the Lions continued to attack, but the Brass would not give up and pulled a goal back when Brian Harris scored from a free kick just outside the Lions penalty area in the 67th minute. The Brass would then find an equalizer six minutes later when Ricardo Yeverino outpaced the Lions defense on a through-ball from Ryan Hunter.

But the Lions retook the lead thanks to the scrappy play of Kelly, who controlled on the right side of the midfield and beat his defender one-on-one. Kelly then served the ball to the back post to a camped out Meagher who headed home to give the Lions a 3-2 victory.

The Lions return home next weekend to face theKansas City Brass on June 11thon St Louis Soccer Day. For Tickets visitwww.stllions.com or call 636-939-5151.
