CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Lady Eagles will host the Gulf Coast Texans Saturday in the Southeastern Conference Championship, hoping to earn a spot at the 2014 W-League Championship in Bradenton, Florida. Charlotte and Gulf Coast finished with identical 5-1-4 records during the regular season, and a tight matchup is expected at the Queens College Soccer Complex.
In the Lady Eagles' last game they earned a 2-1 victory against the Carolina Elite Cobras in a winner-take-all affair. The Cobras were the first to strike when Savannah McCaskill scored in the 19th minute, putting the Cobras ahead 1-0. The Lady Eagles retaliated in the 33rd minute when Emmi Dunn took a pass from Alex Brandt and shot into the top corner, beating Carolina goalkeeper Rose Hull.
Less than five minutes after tying it, the Lady Eagles struck again in the 37th minute when a pass from Hull to another Cobra was intercepted by Leah Fortune, who dribbled the ball past two defenders in front of the net and scored an unassisted goal to put the lady Eagles up 2-1. The second half of the match remained scoreless as the Lady Eagles advanced to the Southeastern Conference Championship.
The Texans and Lady Eagles last faced off in Charlotte, where they played to a 1-1 draw. The goals came from Maria Jose-Rojas for the Texans and Amanda Naeher for the Eagles. Jose-Rojas currently has five goals and two assists this season, while Naeher has four goals.
