QUEENS, N.Y. – F.C. New York defeated the Rochester Rhinos 2-1 on Monday afternoon at Belson Stadium through goals from Qwame Holder and Jhonny Arteaga. Holder opened the scoring for New York and Arteaga notched the second goal in first-half stoppage time. The Rhinos’ Frank Alesci pulled one back in the second half, but New York was able to hold on for three points in its first home victory of the season.

New York started the game strongly, creating several chances using the aerial presence of forward Graciano Brito. Despite multiple opportunities for both sides, it took a New York corner kick in the 29th minute to break the deadlock. Tadeu Terra whipped in a corner from the right side which found Holder, whose bullet header from six yards out shot past Rochester goalkeeper Neal Kitson into the left side of the net.

The score looked set to remain at 1-0 until first-half stoppage time when a New York cross was handled in the box, leading to a penalty kick for the home side. Arteaga stepped up to convert the chance, chipping the goalkeeper to make the score 2-0.

New York looked to maintain the momentum in the second half but was pegged back by a goal from Alesci, who capitalized on a poor clearance to slot the ball past New York goalkeeper Tim Melia from 12 yards out.

But New York wouldn’t concede again, giving interim coach Paul Shaw his first win at the helm of the team. It was also New York’s first win at Belson Stadium, giving the team a 2-4-3 record, good for fourth place in the National Division with nine points. Rochester remains in second place with 11 points with a 3-4-2 record.

F.C. New York’s next home game is Friday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University. For tickets and information please call 866-827-0154 or email tickets@fcnewyorksoccer.com.
