LOS ANGELES, Calif. – There was quite a bit of pent up energy for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat on Sunday when they traveled to face the LA Strikers. Having battled to a scoreless tie on Thursday against the Pali Blues, the Blue Heat were hungry to score, and score they did. By the time the final whistle had blown, the Blue Heat had achieved a new franchise goal-scoring record in a 7-2 W-League victory.
Taking to the field with confidence, organization and playing a possession game, Hannah Beard posted an early goal, her second in three games. Edite Fernandes then used her experience and technique to put away her first goal for the Blue Heat. The first half ended, but not after a driving third score by forward Ann Marie Tangorra made it 3-0 for the home squad.
Early into the second half substitute midfielder Stacy Rodwell scored consecutive and perfectly placed goals off outside free kicks to the upper corners, just past the reach of LA Strikers goalkeeper Erin Frushon. Late defensive-line miscues by the Blue Heat led to a pair of goals by Strikers forward Eva Dixon, but Markey Boyce and Liz Franco scored the final two goals for Santa Clarita before the final whistle was blown.
Santa Clarita goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo also had an outstanding game, stopping numerous shots and rebounds by the Strikers throughout the match.
Coach Fabian Sandoval and his staff were very pleased with tthe win and the team’s overall performance, noting that it is important to continue training hard for each upcoming opponent, given the depth of talent within the Western Conference.
The Blue Heat return home on Friday, June 3 at Valencia High School, facing the Seattle Sounders at 7 p.m.
