CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Lady Eagles and Carolina Elite Cobras stayed even atop the Southeastern Conference after the 1-1 draw on Saturday night. A late goal by Carolina Elite's India Trotter earned the Cobras a draw after Leah Fortune had given the Lady Eagles the first-half lead.
The teams remain tied for first atop the Southeastern Conference table with identical records of 4-1-3 and 15 points.
The Lady Eagles started off strong, keeping possession and getting a good number of opportunities. In the third minute Fortune had a good shot on goal but it went just wide of the post.
In the 24th minute Carolina Elite defender Savannah Coiner was called for a hand ball inside the box, leading to a penalty kick for Charlotte. Fortune took the PK and the shot went off the post, sliding behind Cobras goalkeeper Elizabeth Hull.
The first half continued with the Cobras outshooting the Lady Eagles 6-2, but Charlotte goalkeeper Robyn Jones stood tall and made a number of big saves to maintain the lead. In the 38th minute Trotter took a point-blank shot on the goal but Jones made a vital save to keep the Lady Eagles up heading into halftime.
The second half continued with the Lady Eagles getting a good number of shots and putting pressure on the Cobras. In the 71st minute, second half substitute Ashley Cox had a chance to put the Lady Eagles up 2-0, only to have her shot saved.
Carolina pushed hard for the equalizer and in the 84th minute Trotter was played in on a breakaway. Her shot beat Jones to the far post to even the score at 1-1.
The Lady Eagles play at home again next Saturday, July 5 in the second men’s and women’s doubleheader of the season, facing the Gulf Coast Texans at 5:30 p.m. ET. Tickets can be purchased at a discounted rate until the day before the game and can also be purchased for full price at the gate.
