LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The River City Rovers came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with the West Virginia Chaos on Thursday night at Woehrle Field. The result was the third straight fixture in which the Rovers have come from a goal down, all coming against the team from West Virginia.
The Rovers were led by forward Dylan Terry, who scored the equalizer in the 49th minute, as well as by PDL Team of the Week goalkeeper Dalyan Hawes, who once again turned in a solid performance protecting the Rovers’ net.
West Virginia took the lead early in the ninth minute on a diving header from Dion Peters. The goal was deserved, after the Chaos enjoyed the larger share of possession for the first 30 minutes. They were thwarted on two chances by Hawes, who saved a 10-yard attempt with a dive to the upper left corner as well as a low save to the right side of the goal during the first part of the half.
The Rovers would get even after the break through their ever-present scorer Terry. The Evansville University forward scored his fifth goal of the season after he took the ball into the penalty area and placed a solid side-footed shot into the top-right corner.
The home side wasn’t out of danger despite the comeback. In the 89th minute, the Rovers were whistled for a handball in the penalty area, providing the Chaos an opportunity to win the game. Chaos keeper Sean Teppen came all the way up to the field to take the kick but blasted it off the post and wide, preserving the draw for the home team.
The Rovers moved to 2-3-3 on the year, good for nine points and fifth place in the division. The Chaos extended their first place lead, with 18 points and a 5-3-3 record.
River City will have a quick return to Woehrle with a Saturday fixture against SC United Bantams. The Rovers will look to avenge a 5-2 defeat in Columbia earlier this year. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the gate.
