FAIRFAX, Va. – The Washington Spirit Reserves continued their winning ways on Wednesday evening, defeating the Braddock Road Stars Elite 3-0. With the win, the Spirit Reserves remained unbeaten (7-0-2) and Braddock Road dropped to 1-5-1 this season.
Washington seemed to be in control early, keeping possession and creating chances in the first 10 minutes. However, Braddock Road settled in and nearly scored in the 18th minute when Kahla Seymour’s driven cross just missed Allie Wisner. The rest of the first half saw both teams get forward and create shots on goal, but neither side could find the back of the net.
Braddock Road’s best opportunity came early in the second half when Wisner was played in behind the Washington defense and had the keeper to beat, but Adelade Gay made a great diving save to keep the scoreline level. Six minutes later, after two Washington substitutions, Ashley Herndon broke the tie with a fine strike from just outside the 18.
The Spirit Reserves did not relent after breaking through, and Herndon added to her tally by netting another goal in the 72nd minute. Already ahead 2-0, the Spirit Reserves had a chance to take a commanding lead when Andi Sullivan earned a penalty in the 78th minute. However, Braddock Road keeper Jessie Ferrari denied Lina Granados’s attempt from the penalty spot.
Two Washington substitutes ensured three points for the Spirit Reserves in the 80th minute when Katie Yensen found an open Melissa Downey who calmly finished.
The Spirit Reserves hope to continue their success when they host the Long Island Rough Riders (1-2-4) on Friday evening. The Stars Elite will look to rebound when they play the Rough Riders the following night, June 28 at 7 p.m. at Samuel J. Coffey Stadium.
