Wednesday, June 18, 2014
TAMPA, Fla. – The W-League announced its Team of the Week for Week 6 of the 2014 season today, with K-W United forward Nicole Lyon named Player of the Week. Lyon tallied three goals – including the game-winner against Toronto – and an assist to propel K-W to a pair of wins and third place in the Central Conference standings.
Joining Lyon on the Team of the Week are a pair of returnees as Charlotte’s Leah Fortune earns her second selection of the season after a goal and an assist vs. Dayton, while the Colorado Pride’s Chloe Logarzo also had a goal and an assist in a win against the Colorado Rush to earn selection for the second consecutive week. Rounding out the midfielders is Quebec’s Arielle Roy-Petitclerc, who led her team to its first win of the season, 2-0 vs. London.
Danica Evans of the Colorado Rush earned her spot with a hat trick in a 4-0 win against the Colorado Storm, while forwards Dernelle Mascall of the Gulf Coast Texans (2 goals, assist) and Sara Sanau Ruiz of the New York Magic (2 goals) led their teams to wins that placed them firmly in playoff contention as the season reaches its midway point.
In goal, the Seattle Sounders Women’s Anna Picarelli, former W-League Goalkeeper of the Year, turned in an outstanding performance, stopping 14 shots as Seattle earned an important 3-0 victory against the Colorado Pride. She is joined on defense by former W-League Defender of the Year and Long Island veteran Sue Alber-Weber, who scored the tying goal against Braddock Road and anchored the Rough Riders’ defense in a scoreless draw against the Northeastern Conference-leading Washington Spirit Reserves.
Washington defender Melissa Downey was also selected after scoring against North Jersey as the Spirit Reserves added another pair of shutouts to their record. Rounding out the squad is Carolina Elite’s Carolyn Warhaftig, who scored the late equalizer and helped limit the Gulf Coast attack in a 1-1 draw.
W-League action continues this week with 19 games on the schedule, including a busy six-game slate Wednesday night and three more games Friday. Highlights include Ottawa and Toronto’s first meeting of the season today, Charlotte’s first visit to Gulf Coast Friday night, and a two-game Colorado swing for the LA Blues that see them face the Rush on Friday and the Storm on Sunday.
