TORONTO, Ont. - Nicole Lyon and Suzanne Boroumand tallied a goal apiece Saturday night as K-W United FC defeated the Toronto Lady Lynx 2-0.
"As we knew, the Lynx were a tough side to play and I have to respect their abilities. There were some key players we had to shut down and the ladies executed the game play tonight almost to perfection," K-W United Head Coach Stuart Neely said.
Toronto and K-W started quick and there were challenges on both sides of the ball. There was good pressure and chances at both ends, but it was United that got the first strike when a great build up led to Lyon putting in her third of the season at the 32-minute mark.
The game remained 1-0 for K-W until the 72nd minute when again United played a skillful possession and Boroumand finished off the play.
Toronto hit the crossbar once and swings in momentum were frequent, but United held its ground and walked away with the three points.
Neely said the players are starting to gel together more and more, but they still have a few kinks to mend.
"Obviously we took three points on the road, but we must improve our match management and our ability to play simpler," he said. "We often make choices that affect the team and we need to be smarter and understand individual roles in a team environment."
United's Stephanie Bukovec claimed the shutout. Neely said the team deserved the player of the game honor, with multiple great performances, but gave it to Lyon for her efforts up front.
K-W now sits third in the Central Conference, behind the leaders the Ottawa Fury and the Laval Comets. United's next game is on Wednesday when it hosts the London Gryphons at University Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
"As a team, we are gelling more each day and realizing that we can dare to dream. If we stay the course and build our belief we can improve our abilities. Tonight, I cant say enough about the players. They had no regrets tonight; they started and finished the job. Now, we move on to the next challenge," Neely said.
