CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Lady Eagles will travel to Greenville, S.C. to face the Carolina Elite Cobras on Saturday night in an important W-League Southeastern Conference matchup. The Cobras currently lead the conference with nine points while the Lady Eagles sit in second place with six points.
In their last outing, the Lady Eagles fell 1-0 against the Dayton Dutch Lions in the second game of a back-to-back series in Dayton. The game's lone goal came from Dutch Lion Rose Lavelle, who currently leads the W League in points with 16.
In the first game of the doubleheader the Lady Eagles took a 4-3 victory with goals coming from Macky Wingo, Leah Fortune, and Amanda Naeher (two). Fortune leads Charlotte in points with five with two goals and one assist. Naeher was named W-League Player of the Week for her performance against the Dutch Lions.
The Carolina Elite Cobras (3-0-0, 8 points) are coming off of a 2-1 victory against the Gulf Coast Texans with both of the Cobras' goals coming from former Lady Eagle Blakely Mattern. Mattern is tied with India Trotter for the team lead with six points through three games.
The Cobras have some familiar faces for Lady Eagles fans as Hannah Gmerek and Rachel Baer join Mattern as former Charlotte players now playing for Carolina. Ashley Swinehart re-joined the Lady Eagles after spending the 2013 season with the Cobras.
The Lady Eagles return home to Queens Sports Complex on Friday, June 13 in the first doubleheader with the USL PRO Eagles of the 2014 season. The Lady Eagles face the Dutch Lions at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Eagles vs. Orange County at 8 p.m.
